Trouble is too many riders have conditioned themselves to the point they are only happy riding a track that is slick and bone dry, a lot of skill has gone out of the sport since they brought in the laydowns, its now all about whack the throttle and hold on.6 points

I think that has very little to do with it. The fixtures were announced before the season started with Workington having a few Friday meetings in it, but the carpet has been pulled from under their feet in that regard. The promoters of all teams due at Workington on those Friday's must have agreed to the fixtures, otherwise they wouldn't have been released with those fixtures listed. Not to worry though it's all "in the best interest for the sport."6 points

Simple answer is you should be allowed a guest for any missing rider. I know there will be arguments when people will say that teams are using a facility to strengthen up but as long as it is a rider with the same average then so be it. The public pay to see 7 riders not the crap that will be served up tomorrow.4 points

Considered and rejected as stupid and clutching at straws Starman style. Peterborough rent their stadium and like Poole all food/drink proceeds go to the owners. Last Sunday the start was delayed because loads of people were waiting to get in so the match ran straight through with no interval. With rain looking imminent at Poole and no doubt this was forecast of course it made no sense to have an interval.4 points

The rain spoilt a decent meeting .. the scoreline flattered Sheffield, when the rain started and our boys knew we had the cushion they didn’t risk themselves .. crazy how heat 15 was ran when Sheffield couldn’t win the meeting but Mr Bates thought they were only 3 points behind thinking Charles had scored double points in his tac ride so wanted the race run .. 3 points nice one boys3 points

I know Tony Jackson personally, quite well, and I can assure you that he could not attend the AGM because of personal family commitments (and believe me you would not wish to have those commitments yourself !). His place would have been taken by other management members, but I also know for a fact that they had untimely personal family commitments too !! I appreciate you werent inferring it, but please....no-one should think that our management just simply "couldnt be bothered" to attend the AGM. If you knew just how MUCH of his personal time Tony Jackson puts in week in and week out to sort team issues out, you would find it almost impossible to believe ! And he has a full time job to go to, plus he has long term family commitments to battle with on a daily basis too...so lets give him some credit !2 points

Hugh Stanley Watkinson was born in West Ham London in 1920. After being demobbed from the Army after the end of the war, he invested his army severance pay in a speedway machine and enrolled in the Training School being run by Harold "Tiger" Stevenson at Perry Barr Stadium, Birmingham in 1946. The opening day of the school was spent in the classroom discussing engine maintenance etc, and Watkinson was one of the first of the trainees (he could possibly have been the first) to take to the track on the second day. Stevenson's assistant was the then Birmingham captain Stan Dell, and Dell instructed all the trainees to ride slowly round the track for a few laps and to then gradually increase speed on receiving the signal from himself.Dell positioned himself on the track in the middle of the first bend in order to signal to the trainees, but Watkinson ignored the instruction to ride round slowly, and opened the throttle to its fullest extent, causing Dell to jump over the fence to avoid being struck by Watkinson's out of control machine. Watkinson then ran full tilt into the wooden safety fence and was taken to Birmingham General Hospital where he died from a fractured skull, in the early hours of November 16th 1946. Birmingham Speedway Supporters' Club have made numerous attempts to trace any of his family but without success, but a small plaque is shortly to be affixed to the wall on the landing at the stadium to commemorate the memory of the only rider to have lost his life at Perry Barr. The plaque reads: "In memory of Hugh Watkinson sadly killed training at Birmingham Speedway on 16th November 1946."2 points

Speedway is "recognised" by Sport England who issue guidelines and the definitive list of banned substances. Each recognised sport has to have a testing regime and the Sport England principles enshrined in it's rules and regulations. The ACU/SCB take care of this but apart from Speedway's own testing regime Sport England testers can rock up at anytime, produce their ID and get on with it. An acquaintance of mine is an early retired Detective Sergeant and he spends 1 day/evening each week testing for Sport England, he has a defined geographical area and gets roughly 12 hours notice as to where he is going, what sport and how many competitors to test (he may be given the name/s of a suspect to be included). Agreeing to submit to a testing regime is a licensing condition and the SCB expanded this to all licensed officials 2 ish years ago so that non riders may be called upon to be tested for alcohol or illegal substances at random. I think we all know and my acquaintance confirms that most of the visits are as a result of "information received" or perceived behaviour.2 points

Not just Workington's finances, but when they are away from home (like on Sunday vs Newcastle), I am sure fans will think twice about turning up, so it could/will (delete where applicable) affect other club's finances too.2 points

Are you for real ?? Niels without doubt is the most respected rider, that we are fortunate to have riding for us, and racing in our league. Every other club would our hands off if we offered them the chance of him. He is without equal... For 6 out of the last 8 years, he has single handedly carried this club, and for you to dismiss him, in your above post, is insulting. Call him Mr Reliable, Mr Pointscorer, Mr Bigtime, Mr Our Saviour, you can call him many names he is that good. Some years he has been our only rider capable of winning. In seven years you can count on one hand the times he has let us down. He has topped the scoring charts for more years than I care to remember, I cant believe there are people who want to change him for someone different, just because his recovery from a bad injury is taking longer then usual. A world without compassion, and respect is a very lonely place.2 points

I do not think you are alone. I long gave up on six man teams made up of guests, strays and anyone who could ride a bike and the fact that the powers that be felt I only needed to watch speedway every two or three weeks has been the final straw and my response is well screw you lot. I will save the cash and find something more interesting to follow. Too many of the people running clubs are so far removed from reality that they really need to get out and do everyone a favour and take up knitting because they are of no value to the well being of speedway2 points

Disagree with the fall in standard causing the mass loss of support. Sure some have walked away because of the fall in standard but far more myself including myself have walked away because of micky mouse rules and shambolic way the sport is run. The old British League Was on its knees and down to 9 clubs in 1990 and all the top guys were still riding in the UK. The formation of one big league in 1995 again because of the top flight failing still saw the vast majority of top guys still here. Its probably only in the last 15 years that the majority of big names haven't competed here. At that point the crowds were far less than the late eighties. The decline has been in progress since the mid eighties long before the big boys left.2 points

There’s no pressure on Poole. The team are stronger than earlier this season, they are happy with the much improved track and form for all seven is pretty good.1 point

If this is certainly not a rearranged fixture, surely it's a similar situation to Jack holder last season where he put Poland ahead of British speedway, so Bach and klindt should surely be hit with bans for withholding there services.... I'm not sure about the rules so I do stand to be corrected here before I get torn apart...1 point

My point was that you have a lot of 6 point men who are happy to stay there. Despite increasing there average by tenfold Etheridge is still only 5.98, Dany 6.08 both damn close to 6.00! Having increased there averages by tenfold over the last 2 years I suppose 2 years ago they had 0.0598 and 0.0608 averages respectfully?1 point

Any hampering in the first race was caused by Roberts slow gating. You cant blame Riss for that. He was in his first race for a new club and wanting to impress. He was giving it his all, and unfortunately blocked Robert on that first lap. We all expected Lambert to be in the front chasing Cookie, and no doubt Riss was as surprised as anyone to see Lambert behind him... Give me a tryer anytime. Was well impressed with Riss on that first showing....1 point

I don’t think it is just a case that the standard of rider that has dropped. You do not have to have Gregg, Tai and others to make a good race, but you do want to see riders with track craft, throttle control and the ability to adapt to the track as presented and put on a show. Fans are fed up with seeing those that work at it to hone their skills versus those who ride in so many leagues and countries that Speedway U.K. is just pin money. The paying public deserve better. Aim for a level playing field and that does not mean clubs wasting money they do not have on the top stars because the UK version of speedway cannot afford them any longer. Speedway is a spent sport that will struggle for years to come so it is time to wise up and run at a level that can be reasonably funded out of the very little revenue that each team can generate. Those that cannot make ends meet should close. It needs to be a part time income for those riding over here not the sole source of pay for the participants. Why supporters want to watch six riders plus R/R every other week really makes no sense. Being weekly is probably more a case of if you are lucky (more like,ly every three to four weeks) and with no real allegiance to the team because of guests and double ups supporters no longer recognise or have a local team. You have a bunch of riders who are mercenaries and take what they can get from any source. They are not interested in the punter just the pound in their pocket from the nights racing be this a fixed fee and/or points money.1 point

The thread title refers to Workington v Sheffield and this IS a re-arranged fixture. Originally this was to be run on June 9th, but the Stadium Landlords prevented Workington running then as there was a music event at the stadium. The Newcastle v Workington Championship fixture definitely ISN'T a re-arranged fixture as this was in place at the start of the season. Ironically, the Workington v Newcastle Championship fixture was also in place at the start of the season for tonight Friday Aug 10th, but was removed. We would have had Dan Bewley available had the "Committee" not removed it their quest to put us out of business!1 point
