Is It Finally Time For One League?
stevebrum replied to TheSmiler's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
By running one league at a lower level isn’t going to cut costs that drastically. Whoever rides in the heat leader role is always going to demand more money for that responsibility. So granted it might be cheaper for an established heat leader versus someone like Emil, Doyle etc however those costs are often offset by sponsors picking up the tab of the big name. Im sure running Speedway isn’t the lucrative product it was in the golden eras of the sport however we live in different times now. speedway isn’t the credible far reaching sport that it used to be. Tracks aren’t closing because of lack of attendances at all. The demand for land and the long standing tie in with Greyhound stadiums is the cause of the closures. Nothing else. speedway has failed to look after its interests as a whole for many many years and hence why we now are in the situation we are in. promoters have for too long used self interest as their primary motivation, Thats why you have to applaud the NSS (which many said would never happen) for what it’s achieved in more recent times and the likes of Workington reopening. with the right backing and promotion the sport can still survive as it is. Council protection can also be vital (and there is a glimmer of hope for Coventry). Thats why keeping 2 leagues is vital because a watered down one level league isn’t going to work and has been pointed out there isn’t enough decent standard riders without the big boys from abroad to fill all team spaces. Let clubs run when they want, give them back some ownership. Or maybe the top flight can have a break away league under NORA and perhaps form a smaller league and join the Polish league like Germany does. Plenty of Brits travel to Poland to watch proper high standard teams perform so it’s not too hard a task to make happen. UK teams could have a squad system for Polish league meetings. -

Poole have always been one of the better run clubs and financially in a decent place for years. Who’s the WE? It’s well known outsiders or sponsorship deals pay for the top boys. -

Let Poole keep Wednesdays (they have never had a problem racing on a Danish league night, and they have had plenty of Danes through the years) and get them to move up along with Glasgow. Let them have a Scottish trophy (with Edinburgh and Berwick) and allow them to build down to championship level for those. The protected UK nights are a farce, Poland can take any Thursday they want and if they really wanted a Monday they could have it. Time to let teams run on whatever nights they want and have Monday as the TV night for the broadcaster. BSN will continue covering both leagues anyway to give viewers plenty of options. 1 league I doubt will happen. Plus it isn’t the answer. -
Ipswich Witches v Belle Vue 10th July

Well pointed out. Would have been a bigger win then if he was there. The expected result really. -

Now the Witches are back at full strength I except a fairly routine win. Probably 50-40 -
Correct! I get it’s a different or privileged view but I only did it because Brian Buck asked me. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it at the time and the camaraderie we all shared pre and post match. I certainly wouldn’t have paid for the privilege to Marshall tho!

Good win for the table toppers. They certainly made hard work of it. Although they would have had it sewn up well before the last race but for costly falls and exclusions for Doyle, King and Brennan. They just need to ensure all are firing by September and no team will touch them on form. -
Belle Vue v Birmingham Monday 7th July PL2
stevebrum replied to Brummies_Ste's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
I think the track at Brum has always been shocking. Speaking as someone who marshalled there for 5 seasons it was always bare really early. -

No one knows the circumstances behind this tho. Maybe Birmingham are happy with Hagon and will cost them less money paying out for less points? Maybe Edwards already told Birmingham he didn’t want to come back? One thing that is usual tho is nothing remotely factual will be released to the public which is why it’s mockery. To be honest some whingers were calling for Pearson to be sacked for years. Nigel was a proper speedway person through and through. Be careful what you wish for….. it could be worse you could have someone who has no idea about the sport like people like Abi who just paraphrases everything that the experts say in every interview. Even Tony Millard who made so many mistakes it was off putting. Yet again another none real speedway person. Kelvin and Chris do a good job along with Scott. Kelvin is not a journalist like Nigel was but he is the best we have so far. Dave Goddard and Dave Rowe do a decent job at what they do also btw. -
I mean commended in regards to doing virtually nothing which seems common place at most tracks. Problem with promoters is they only ever go part way and no longevity. I would have been targeting every local business with free adult and kids tickets on a regular basis. Some will only come if it’s free but some will get hooked and stay. I know clubs do this from time to time but as one offs. You have to properly sell the sport if you want a return on it as a business.

You mean pay to watch the meeting but work as well? perhaps give each fan a task to do as soon as they pay their money might be more feesable. Why should any fan not do a job if we look at it that way. Club would be the tidiest and cleanest track around! Anyway back in the real world 😉……. Volunteered for 5 seasons at Brum when it reopened. It was an inconvenience because you stand alone on a bend reacting quickly to anything that happens and your friends are all chatting and drinking a beer on the terraces. It’s volunteer work not stand around and enjoy the meeting. I also used to track Marshall at the old Perry Barr across the road and it was taken a lot more serious back then. And YES we got paid for it too. Speedway no longer has that luxury and clubs should be grateful to every person who gives up their time to do jobs that most supporters do not want to do. And I say that with confidence because if that was the case there would be a queue of people turning up at the pre season staff meeting to get the privilege to watch the match for nothing and help the club run.

Close to 70 for Sheffield. -
Thank you. As a Brummie I will always have a soft spot for the Brummies (plus I was track staff for 5 seasons also when it reopened) but my team will always be Wolves as you know! im hoping to make a meeting before the season is out to see friends as well. The very fact that Birmingham is the 2nd biggest city it does have a huge advantage over other rural clubs. There are plenty of youngsters as you pointed out that could have been targeted which is really aimed at the sport as a whole and I think what the Masons did in encouraging kids was to be commended. Speedway has never invested in itself and that’s the situation we now find ourselves in as a consequence. Birmingham people just haven’t seemed interested in the sport. Perhaps if it was more successful as a team you might find some glory hunters becoming fans similar to how Villa attract more fans. For Birmingham it’s now too late for help.

Belle Vue v Ipswich Monday 30th June
stevebrum replied to Aries's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
I’ve not seen anything posted about this neither. Anyone? -
Again, why would I attend when the Brummies aren’t my team? If you can point me to a post (even from Brummies supporters) that say the team aren’t rubbish then your point might make some sense. But of course you want be able to. League tables don’t lie. Oxford loook awful too. Do you want me to attend there as well? such an odd reply.

Didn’t expect that result but given Witches are only half a team fit it’s not surprising.
