Air Fence Safety Performance - Research?
THE DEAN MACHINE replied to Elephantman's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
yes there is proof every rider that has slammed into all sorts of fences . They are used at some tracks in road racing and they spend millions on testing them. Car racing is total different as cars are fitted with crumple zones into the chassis .bikes dont have that luxury .the research behind these fences is done in the only way you can with racing and thats to test them in real situations. When the airfence first came out the were fitted on the straights aswell but it was found that it sucked the bike into the fence going down the straight but it only happened a couple of times.please explain how that would of been found out without actually being used in a race. Of the 1000s of serious crashes that have happend with the air fence only the lifting of the fence has shown to be at fault and that is being addressed. car manufactures spend millions on car safety and reinacting crashes but after all that money and testing there is still accidents that happen in the real world that they did not and could not see happening because in crashes not two accidents react the same but they learn from . There is no better testing ground than the real world but we have a great product and every rider agrees its a major step forward in safety. After seeing jason garrity's horrific crash at sheffield i believe an airfence inffront of the current fence would of prevented his broken leg. The so called safe fence snapped his front wheel rim in half ,what chance did a bone have -

sheffield's safety record is nothing to do with the fence it the shape of the track. You dont hit the fence straight on you hit it along it ,it was the same sort of thing at exeter and that was a steel fence but you didnt hit it straight on and yes i have ploughed into sheffields fence aswell and it didnt save me from injury. The fence didnt give an inch so something had to absorb the impact and that was me .an airfence would of taken most of if not all of the impact. Riders crashing is testing .its work in progress . you cant test properly for racing incidents no matter how much money you throw at it .there will always be that one crash where a one in a million chance happend. I dont like using the" you have never raced a speedway bike " but when you have hit an metal/wood/mesh fence it bloody hurts and i have to say there have been a couple of times ive crashed into an airfence and it hurt very little .airfences a massive step forward in safety if you know me i very against pointless things being used in speedway like dirt deflectors and oil catchers etc and im very vocal about it but the airfence is a godsend for speedway and i know the SRA tried to push through airfence 5years ago at every level so the riders are all united on this .also there is a helmet on the market that you put on loose and then inflate to fit .Adam Mckinna used one at buxton this year. The only real way to test is to put it in real situations and that is whats been done yes it has floors and they need to be addressed but the airfence has been a excelent step forward and to read some promoters saying "my track dosent need them" and then to go to try to justify why is really sad -

are you sure your not a promoter?. Well the air fence saved my life so thats proof enough for me and i dont think you would need to go far to find other riders who agree but the fact is they are going to be installed at every track and although ive retired now its a fact im really happy about -

i used the bouncy castle /garden fence because thats what the 2 types of fence really are and my helmet broke because i hit the airfence so hard i actually hit the fence behind behind it aswell and thats what broke my helmet. Without that airfence infront things would of been a lot worse. My avtar pic is the crash . Yes it is my opinion but it is also the opinion of all the riders although they all agree the fixing down of the air fence needs looking at and any safety board anywhere in the world would be of the same opinion as the riders .air fences are also used in road racing aswell now -

THE DEAN MACHINE replied to Elephantman's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
every rider that has hit one full on including myself is proof enough .i have spent a few times in hospital when ive hit other fences .the worst crash i ever had was at newport with an air fence which i broke my helmet but apart from some aches and pains i was relativly ok .when we did the SRA meetings every rider bar none wanted an air fence and i dont think that will ever change. The fitting is an issue that needs to be looked at but the air/foam fence is a must. If want scientific proof the get a bouncy castle on one side of your garden and the normal garden fence on the other then borrow a motorbike and ride full speed into each one in turn and see for yourself which one is best -

It dosent matter what the FIM or prince charles for that matter say .we are talking about a safety issue that is not about money making or whatever .the air /polyfoam fence is an absolute must at every track. yes the way its fitted down needs looking at but the fence itself it a total yes ,no buts. It needs to be installed everywhere -
i dont think this true .maybe before a meeting you might notice the fence and think it but when in a race the fence dosent exsist and neither does crashing .if either does your in the wrong game. all that matters is winning. its a different story away from the track when common sense kicks in

THE DEAN MACHINE replied to Elephantman's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
there does need to be some research into the fitting of airfences and whats behind some of them (lifting up) but the airfences are by far the best fence at any track ,trust me i know ive tested one to the full. check out my profile picture .im the one in white not the one on the ground. that would of ended a lot worse without an air fence -

sky do a good job but do they really push speedway on their channels. its never advertised .you never see trailers for it .on the other side eurosport look like they have really taken it under their motorsport wing and seem to be really pushing the sport out there to a bigger audience.
-
there will always be enough riders but the standard might drop a little but it wont be noticed after a couple of matches. fans form a bond with their team or riders and its that bond which is getting lost because speedway is becoming like a swingers club, riders are just turning out for any team and fans lose that bond. also what is the alternative? do nothing carry on as we are and watch the sport go deeper into the abiss

speaking from watching from a fan point of view and this is only on league racing .i am fed up with guests and double up/down and not knowing who is in a team from week to week. i can except injuries happen but i dont except riders missing when they are riding for another team .and i am fuming at the cheating and lying to the public about riders not riding because whatever reason .i know why promoters do it because its win at all costs but i believe this evil is hammering the nail in british speedway .from next season we have got to say its britain first ,if you cant commit to that then you dont ride here. yes it might be painfull but in the long term surely the sport will be better for it. as for the promoters lying about absent riders well lets just hope it comes back to bite them

it also tells you that the ones that are availible wont ride for the money that buxton pay -
i wasnt knocking stocks i was just making the point about speedway gets a raw deal for spilling a droplet oil .personally i think speedway should be more like stocks and not trying to be something its not
-
these would be the same tracks that other nights of the week run stockcars and bangers which half dont even have silencers and drop oil all over the place yet we get crucified for spilling a droplet from our breather pipes. if this were cricket football f1 or any other sport noise wouldnt be an issue. there are some people in the world that love noise and we have as much right to make it as any tree loving person. and im bloody well going to
