Sad to hear of the death of the character at Oxford Ernie Tipping(?) known as "Kojak" to many fans over the years who used to sell the "Star" and "Mail". He was a great character enlivening many a "discussion" winding up the away fans especially.
RIP
I seem to remember my mother saying that he was serving in the RAF when he rode for Oxford?
I've just checked and apparently his RAF posting was cancelled so he could continue to ride for Oxford?
Having just finished Alan's most excellent book I thought that I'd re-read Peter Collins' book because of the close connection and history between the two riders and again found it very informative and a very good read second time round.
I've recently acquired Alan Wilkinson's book and I have to say that it's truly inspirational. Alan and Jean (now both sadly no longer with us) were two very remarkable people.
Being a "Cheetahs" fan I saw first hand Wiggy's exploits. He could be briiliant but also disappointing. Hans always said that he continually "tinkered" with his bikes which affected his performances on occasions.
Personally I think that "Wiggy" always prioritised Grasstrack/Longtrack over speedway. Shame because I think he could have become a real big force in speedway however he didn't do too bad all things considered.
I'd be interested to know how fifteen minutes of actual ontrack action (using fifteen heats as an example) could be improved upon so as to make a full evening's entertainment? Perhaps adopt the American Football scenario and incorporate touchline entertainment?
Just watching a repeat of "Repair Shop" where one time Crayford rider Mike Bessent's boots were revitalised. Sadly at the time of the original transmission Mike was seriously ill with a brain tumour and died before they were completed.
I, too, have never understood why people get so upset about the tractor making an appearance. We used to enjoy the break in racing by having a good old chat amongst ourselves to pass the time.
Swindon fans have had to put up with a lot if hyperbole these last few years from certain people who think that they have their best interests at heart.
Some great images there...recognise a few.
