Oxford v Sheffield 22/5/25
InTheDeepStuff replied to Manifesto's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Think you’re spot on with that. Kileen had advantage of an experienced mechanic who knows the setups around Glasgow (mechanics for one of the Glasgow team) but he just seemed to be going backward heat by heat. Not sure what the answer is as you don’t want to say bring in likes of Jody Scott before he’s had a chance to dip his toes with Redcar. Only one that I think could do the job is Luke Harrison but like a lot of the available rising star riders that would mean him having 4 teams in UK (already has Scunthorpe, Scunthorpe/Sheffield & Kings Lynn Young Stars) -

For Sheffield to have any chance in this back up is needed for the Holder brothers. Pickering the epitome of inconsistency this season averaging 10 at home and 4 away, he’s now a heat leader and needs the consistency of one. Rowe had a very poor night at his former track so will need to bounce back and hopefully Sedgmen continues to pick up a few points in the engine room also. Not sure how Flint goes around Oxford but if there isn’t a wide line he’ll struggle, although don’t expect 16 points from Kerr again at reserve he’ll need to put in a shift to pick up some of the slack from others. Oxford should be stronger with Kildemand at reserve, you’d imagine at least 5 rides for him, Cook at 2 should get points especially against the Sheffield engine room/lower order, the Riss/Tungate partnership has potential for big points if they both show up, with Wrighy at 5 it does leave them possibly vulnerable in Ht13, but they’ll be hoping to have it seen up by then. Another close one going for a 47-43 home win -
Believe when new averages issued end of May Dan should move to 8.30 (8.71 for home matches) will mean can get anyone in the league as it stands now with exception of Masters, Lawson and Wright. With Flint and Boughen being let’s just say inconsistent R/R not really the first choice option

Wonder if Mr Tolley will follow his pal Mr Mole to Sheffield and buy out the Bates’ who are seemingly wanting out?
-
Dislocated hip usually takes 2-3 months healing for a ‘normal’ person but we know that speedway riders are far from that when it comes to recovery time. Wonder how long it’ll be before Doyle is back 1-2 months or will Częstochowa be pushing him to come back sooner, we know they don’t run guest over in Poland so will want him back asap, whereas sure Ipswich will be able to cover for him through R/R or a guest depending on track and opposition

Sheffield as usual reliant on the top 3, Jack usually goes great around King’s Lynn, Chris was paid for at least double digits on his three visits last season, but Pickering majorly inconsistent in his three visits scoring as low as 2 from 4. Sheffield will need a performance from the ex Lynn riders in Rowe and Kerr (hopefully finding that plastic tab in his tank will cut out the engine issues) to back up the heat leaders as can’t see many points from Sedgmen or Flint. Harris will need to perform as a number 1 and be backed up by Lawson, Kvech and NKI and you’d expect Klindt to be in double digits with the 7 rides he’s more than likely to take. This should be really close and can see a home win just 47-43

Heat 6 was a belter, hopefully a video of that’s posted on either Sheffield speedway or British Speedway. Ipswich unlucky when on 5-1 until last bend when Thompson binned it as that was the difference between a win and a loss in the end. Emil and Doyle both looked slow (all race times shockingly slow tonight for all) in majority of their races, Doyle rising like a road block in most of his heats. Ipswich solid but with room for improvement from a few on their next visit definitely. As for Sheffield Holder snr is a worry, no real pace again and looks like he’s coming back from injury rather than a helluva 2024 season, Sedgmen very poor again, you’d think they can’t persevere with him too long before making a change, noticed as well again tonight Flint never ever checks during all 4 laps where his partner is, baulked them in more than one race tonight you’d hope Stead sees that and tries to improve that within his riding Good meeting all in all with a couple of stand out races -

Aka ‘The Belle Vue hosepipe’ -
Will Kurtz and Bewley have one eye on the Warsaw SGP? Which Craig Cook will turn up for Oxford? Can Riss continue his good form at home? Wright should be buzzing from British Final Could go either way this one, Belle Vue need middle order of Z.Cook, Lidsey and Blodorn to fire, don’t expect much from their reserves. If C.Cook on song could get at least 5 rides and easily outscore his counterparts.

He got a paid max riding at number 2 against a poor Kings Lynn side, think it’ll be a bit different riding at number 5, no easy heats in that race number -

A lot depends on it it’s pre 2024 injuries Doyle and Emil turn up or if it’s the inconsistent 2025 versions. This will be the closest match of the season at Owlerton and can see Sheffield nicking this by 6-10 points -

See Kyle Howarth has also had to pull out of the British Final tomorrow with after effects of his crash at Glasgow on Friday, hopefully he’s back fully fit for Thursdays meeting -
Just saying that a lot of the riders now have the one month rolling contract rather than signing for the whole season, know at anytime the club can bin them off but this gives rider more control if they either don’t fancy the league or get a better deal to ride in Poland after signing a Warsaw contract

Glasgow need the big 3 to fire to have a chance tonight, hopefully Kyle Howarth is fully recovered from his illness from Sunday toll and that it’s another closer one for the fans -

Didn’t Lewi Kerr say at start of year he’d got brand new engines for this season? If that’s the case could just be testing problems -
Didn’t expect the meeting to be that one sided. Sheffield rode pretty solid from 1-7, as has been said earlier both Holders looked slower than usual, Pickering was his usual Owlerton 2025 self, Rowe again picked up good points unsure if he got a knock on the arm when Flint didn’t look who was behind him in Ht8 and unintentionally fenced him, Sedgmen a lot better than his afternoon performance and the Kerr/Flint reserve combo outstanding again. As for Belle Vue Lemon must be scratching his head, does he leave the 1-7 as it is or make a change(s). Bewley did his job looking ultra quick on a couple of races, Zischke did well for his first visit, think it helped him there was an outside line as that seems to be his go to style, Mulford was always going to struggle against the in form Sheffield reserves, but the combo of Kurtz, Blodorn, Lidsey and Cook scoring 15 from 16 rides was shocking, Kurtz especially poor as he basically rode at Owlerton for a season when guesting for Simon Stead so knows his way around the place, thought he was on for an Audi badge at one point. As other posters have said scores in May mean nothing come October, Sheffield have turned Belle Vue over in the league meetings on many occasions but failed in the important ones at the end of the season, hopefully that curse can be lifted this season.

The bank holiday lunch time meetings do Belle Vue no favours, track will always be different for those than the usual Monday evening conditions, which nibbles away at the home track advantage. It might make the club a few more quid with extra fans making the journey but racing Isn’t as good and puts home team on back foot also.
