What will 2026 UK speedway bring?
arnieg replied to Lionsman66's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
This seems unlikely. To anyone in the Oxford orbit it was clear from around May that enthusiasm for running in the Premiership had waned and by August it had become the expectation that the Spires would expire, and that the goal was simply to complete the season and re-focus on the Cheetahs in the Championship. I can't believe that other promoters were not aware of this. -
Villads, Rasmus or Bastian?

Hence the negligible value we would place on most speedway 'businesses' -

That seems high. Very much dependent on the business, but in my day it was typically 10-20. Has it changed that much? And for a speedway business aren't we more likely to be looking at an asset value of the intangibles (promoter's licence, ability to generate useable tax losses, goodwill) -

They could follow the lead of clubs from other minor nations (Landshut in Germany and Daugavpils in Latvia) and join the Polish National League -

Well there's Bill Barker, the Commonwealth Final takings and the flatulent dog ... -
Sounds to me like he's one of the few sensible men in the room, making a judgement that for his financial health/personal life/sanity it is time to get out. And who can blame him.

When we are desperately casting around for more teams in the top tier, introducing a provision that forcibly removes removes one, seems, somewhat reckless. -

But nobody is obligated to buy Sheffield, and if this is the case the BSPL is making a conscious decision to make the club virtually unsaleable.

Maybe they should have been listening to the fans rather than 'preaching' -

Riders are NOT EMPLOYEES FOR TAX PURPOSES. That does not mean they can't be employees for other purposes. Similar confusion over categorisation exists with aspects of Company and Employment law. -

The problem with ultimatums is that if you are in the weaker position they are likely to be ignored - as history teaches us. Let me take you back to 1963/4 when the National League desperately needed a 7th team. The SCB instructed Provincial League champions to move up. Wolves said no and the PL ended up running a pirate operation in 1964. In 1964 West Ham saved the day, in 2026 it was supposed to be Northampton .... -
And with 14 Robert Lambert's you wouldn't get a meeting until late August.

2025: 322 meetings 2004: 1095 meetings All-time high- 1300 in 1978. Sobering stats.

Pretty much, including appearances from the likes of Sam Hagon. As far as past seasons go there has been no impediment to entering more than one state. I think one year a Tasmanian Championship was held [in Victoria] purely to manufacture work permit places.

Over last 3 seasons Bewley has averaged 6.08 over 10 matches at Foxhall. That is substantially worse than any other Premiership track [I think 7.50 at Birmingham is his next lowest]
