  2. SCORPIONS IN DOUBLE DATE WITH BEARS A VITAL COUPLE of days lay ahead for the FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions, as the team face the Redcar Bears home and away in Premier League action. The Scorpions firstly travel north to the South Tees Motor Park on Thursday, before entertaining the Bears in the return fixture at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening (7.30pm). Scunthorpe currently sit in third place in the Premier League table on a total of 28 points, the same number of points as second placed Ipswich. Two positive results will see the Scorpions move into second place, behind only runaway leaders Edinburgh. Last week, the Scorpions hit 60 points for the first time this season, registering a 60-35 home win over Rye House, with a back-to-his-best David Howe scoring a fine paid 18-point maximum. Redcar, having ridden one meeting more than Scunthorpe, are currently in eighth place on 19 points, some nine points behind the Scorpions. However, the Bears completed the early season double over the Scunthorpe in the League Cup, so there will be no complacency in the Scunthorpe camp. Redcar contain two former Scunthorpe riders, Carl Wilkinson and Jan Graversen, in their ranks, with Wilko, in particular, being a Scorpions’ legend. Team manager Dave Peet says: “In our last 3 or 4 home meetings, we have been very dominant, and that was been very pleasing to see. Our riders have really started to perform on a consistent basis around the Eddie Wright Raceway. “We need another performance like that at home to Redcar on Friday. They won at our place in April, and we’re determined not to see a repeat of that. “But if we’re going to turn into real contenders in the Premier League, we need some consistency in our away performances as well. We need to take the confidence built up by our recent home performances, take that in our away meetings, and start performing on the away tracks as well.” Scunthorpe are likely to again use the rider replacement facility for Josh Auty in the two meetings against Redcar. The 23-year-old Yorkshireman is recovering from having his appendix removed. SCHOOLS OUT FOR SUMMER… With North Lincolnshire’s schools having broken up for the summer holidays earlier this week, Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey is hoping for a bumper turn-out of youngsters at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening. Scunthorpe changed their cut-off point for admission prices for children prior to the start of the 2014 season, raising it so that all those under 18 are now regarded as children in terms of admission. Speaking at the time of its introduction, Godfrey said: “I think we might be the first club to do it. The cut-off point is normally 16, but we’re going to raise that to 18. “It’s the sensible thing to do. I suppose we might lose a few quid from those already coming in; but I prefer to see it as an opportunity of encouraging a few more younger people along. “16 and 17-year-olds don’t have a lot of money and these days they have to still be in some form of education. By the time they are 18, they can leave education and are subject to a higher minimum wage. “The school-leaving age has been raised, and it makes sense to move with the times. I think it will benefit us in the long-term. We’ll monitor it and see what it brings in.” Godfrey now adds: “The schools have now broken up for the summer and the days are long and hot. “By the evening, the young people from this area are probably looking for something a bit different. If they are, I hope we can tempt a few in the direction of the Eddie Wright Raceway. “If they are under 18, the admission price is only £5. What better way to spend the night than coming along with your mates to watch the only motorsport with no brakes.” There are 24 heats of action in total on Friday, with a nine-heat second half, including a Midland Development League match between Castleford and Long Eaton. Admission prices for Friday: Adult: £15.00 Student/OAP: £13.00 Child (10 – 17): £5.00 Child (0 – 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Family Ticket £35 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-17) Match Programme: £1.00 Expected teams for Friday (English unless stated): FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. 3. Paul, mate, you're at the Horseshoe Bar at the same time every week - Commonwealth Games or not. All the best Rob
  4. No saying you haven't. Just saying it's July and whatever the make-up of the 2014 NL, it ain't going to change much between now and the end of the season. Sick of tired of reading what's wrong with the NL. There's a lot of things right with it as well, e.g. Arron Mogridge and Danny Phillips and Nathan Greaves and Oliver Greenwood and (sadly now injured) Luke Crang and Liam Carr and Sam Chapman and Max Clegg and Reece Downes, etc, etc, etc. Let's hope for some cracking Cradley vs Coventry and Buxton vs Scunthorpe matches, and the all time, young riders getting better and better and better. The NL is the only league we have not overrun by foreign riders. It's a fantastic league. Let's celebrate that, instead of picking holes in it the whole time. Looking forward to a real feast (I think I'm going to 8) of National League meetings in August. All the best Rob
  5. Would you like some curry sauce to go with that chip? The 2014 NL is what it is - end of story. All the best Rob
  6. Starts are too fair these days. Should go back to allowing riders touching the tapes, as long as they don't break them. Would create some much needed controversy and talking points. All the best Rob
  7. I'm sure Dimitri Berge is touched by your ongoing concern for his well-being. All the best Rob
  8. It seems to me that Edinburgh's unbeaten run is because their away meetings keep getting called off: e.g. the health & safety issues at Peterborough, tonight's rain off, etc. In which case, Edinburgh's unbeaten run isn't as impressive as first appears. I'm claiming a greater record: Oxford have been unbeaten in all official competitions since October 2007. And wait until the Walthamstow fans get on here - they have an unbeaten record that the Monarchs will never get close to. All the best Rob
  9. Uncle Len hasn't got it right at all, has he? He should have just blamed it on an unknown health & safety issue. All the best Rob
  10. Speedway needs to be set up to cater for the fans, not the riders. All the best Rob
  11. Now booked the half days which mean I should make every Scunny home meeting until the end of August. I did want to go tonight, but knew with the pain-in-the-neck Game Fair just up the road from me, it would be a nightmare to get out of Oxfordshire. All the best Rob
  12. It cools the curry down Seriously, though, it's fantastic value for money in the Scunny café - prices at many other tracks are almost double. All the best Rob
  13. My favourite is the chips topped with curry and a can of coke.... all for £2.50. It's usually Meal 2 on the specials. All the best Rob
  14. I assume you're talking about the old Wembley. The new Wembley is poor in terms of atmosphere - Cardiff is better. All the best Rob
  15. SCORPIONS OUT TO SHOOT DOWN ROCKETS FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions will be looking to maintain their current high Premier League position by defeating the Rye House Rockets at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening (7.30pm). Third-placed Scorpions will use rider replacement for Josh Auty, currently in hospital where he is having an operation to have his appendix removed. Auty, No 1 at Scunthorpe in 2012 and 2013, is currently third in the Scorpions’ averages. All the Scunthorpe team apart from Nicolai Klindt will be able to take a rider replacement ride for the Englishman. Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “We never take anything for granted, and that goes doubly so now that Josh is out. “Josh had hit some good form in recent weeks. It will make it harder being without him, but we’re still looking for three points from this meeting. “But Rye House will certainly not be pushovers. They have a top No 1 in Great Britain international Edward Kennett, who rode as a couple of times as the wildcard in the British Grand Prix. “And they have Jason Bunyan at reserve, who is no slouch around Scunthorpe. “Our recent form in recent weeks has been really good, but we won’t become complacent. We have to perform on Friday to ensure we come out of the meeting with the result that we desire.” Last season’s Scunthorpe vs Rye House clash at the Eddie Wright Raceway was a classic affair, with the Scorpions coming from ten points behind to grab a 47-46 victory. Admission prices for Friday: Adult: £15.00 Student/OAP: £13.00 Child (10 – 17): £5.00 Child (0 – 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Family Ticket £35 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-17) Match Programme: £1.00 Expected teams for Friday (English unless stated): FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. 18. BIRMINGHAM SPEEDWAY season ticket holders will be welcome at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway for speedway meetings for the rest of the 2014 season. Very sadly, Birmingham have withdrawn from 2014 Elite League. Promoter Alan Phillips pulled out a couple of weeks ago after a financial struggle. An official statement earlier today (Monday) from the BSPA read: “With deep regret the British Speedway Promoters' Association can confirm the closure of Birmingham Brummies with immediate effect. “Great efforts have been made by several people to ensure the team could continue racing until the end of the season but sadly this has not proved possible.” Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey: “It’s massively sad to see Birmingham shut its doors, and I’m sure I echo the thoughts of everyone in speedway, when I say I sincerely hope it’s only temporary and we see the Brummies back next season. No-one ever wants to see a speedway track close. “I feel so sorry for their fans. Birmingham have an excellent set of supporters, and they used to come to support the Brummies in numbers at the Eddie Wright Raceway in the days they were a Premier League club. I hope to see them back running in the Premier League come next March. “The Birmingham season tickers holders paid out to see speedway for the year. I know it’s not quite the same as following their own club, but they are welcome at Scunthorpe. They just need to bring along their season ticket with them. “We hope some of their fans will take advantage of this gesture. As well as standalone Premier League fixtures on Fridays, we also have a couple of double-headers left on August Bank Holiday Monday (August 25) and the Sunday following that (August 31). We’d love to see a few of the Brummies’ coats on our terraces.” The offer to Birmingham Season Tickets Holders applies to admission only. Programmes, food, car parking, etc will be charged at standard price. It is hoped that the Scunthorpe Scorpions will reach the Premier League play-offs – the offer to Birmingham Season Tickets Holders will be extended to any such meetings.
  19. Should be a good meeting. Scunny bring in one of the Smugs (Max Fricke) in place of Nicolai Klindt, who is riding for Leicester. All the best Rob
  20. Probably nothing more to it than the fact TJ had already had 5 rides prior to Heat 15, whereas Ash had just 4 rides. All three points already in the bag, so might as well share the rides about a bit, especially as with 8 paid 10 from 4, Ash had been no slouch either. No doubt had the third point been beyond mathematical doubt, then Matt Williamson would have been left in Heat 14 as well, but Sheffield could have still snatched the point with two 5-1s, so Thomas in Heat 14 was insurance that we definitely ended up with that extra point. All the best Rob
