  1. Or dodgy burger, maybe. There was a lot of them about around that time, I seem to recall. All the best Rob
  2. Speedway needs to shed a lot of its "old" image. Maybe it should look at its current World Champion, who does appeal to the young. All the best Rob
  3. I do wonder sometimes if bike technology has overtaken some of the tracks, with Brough Park being an example. The bikes have got faster and have become more difficult things to control (e.g. lay downs are much more powerful than uprights); while the older tracks have stayed the same. Apart from everyone going back to Jawa 2-value engines from 1970, I'm not sure how you resolve this, because you can't do a lot to change tracks within stadiums which are not owned by the speedway. All the best Rob
  4. However, if the fixture was raced in 1982, then Newcastle would destroy a 2014 Edinburgh side who are still twinkles in the milkman’s eye. All the best Rob
  5. Al Stewart, I think you've hit the nail on the head there. I didn't identify Edinburgh as the team to beat this year; I thought keeping Cookie had left you too top heavy. You're not got a powerhouse team who everyone predicted to win the league before the start of the season, in contrast to e.g. Newcastle in 1982 (that was the year Joe Owen and Bobby Beaton came in on 7.50 assessed averages, despite the fact Joe had a 7.00+ BL average in 1981!!). There's several times where you've come within a few races of being beaten, only to pull it out of the fire. It's why I also think the Premier League isn't over yet this year, especially when it comes to the play-offs. Edinburgh aren't that much stronger than everyone else. They can be beaten. For me, Newcastle '82 will remain the strongest side put together at this level. But it will be interesting to see how far the unbeaten run of the 2014 Monarchs can be stretched. All the best Rob
  6. He could be right, though. The '82 Diamonds were monsters at home, they won the home leg of the cup final against a good Ellesmere Port team by something like 73-23! All the best Rob
  7. Another thing to point out is that the Newcastle '82 team completed the clean sweep... league, cup, Supernational and fours. And Joe Owen won the NLRC as a bonus. In 1991, Arena Essex missed out on a trophy... the Gold Cup. All the best Rob
  8. Paul, I've reserve my judgement until the season is over, Edinburgh have yet to win a single trophy after all. I think the strongest team I've ever seen at second tier level were the 1982 Newcastle Diamonds. Six heat leaders, while Joe Owen was probably better than Craig Cook. All the best Rob
  9. Well done to Glasgow for regaining some pride this afternoon, by pushing the Monarchs all the way. Meanwhile, both the Edinburgh juggernaut and the smugness rolls on.... I wonder what Blobby will count on now he's run out of fingers and toes All the best Rob
  10. What are you talking about - Shadders is a hardcore fan, he follows the Rockets across the country. He pays his admission fee - he is entitled to an opinion. All the best Rob
  11. It is getting tough for the poor lambs. Now they've reached 22, they've run out of both fingers and toes. Best you beat them today to put them out of their misery. All the best Rob
  12. Who's Stuart Dixon? You're excelled yourself there, getting both names wrong. Of the 14 letters in his name, you've only got 8 right. I'm afraid that's a F. All the best Rob
  13. Good luck to the Tigers this afternoon. Hope it's like the end of "Return Of The Jedi", when good triumphs over the forces of evil All the best Rob
  14. SCORPIONS QUICK TO RE-ARRANGE SHEFFIELD CLASH FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions have arranged for last night’s (Friday) rained off clash with local rivals Sheffield Tigers to be restaged at the Eddie Wright Raceway next Wednesday (July 9th, 7.30pm). With an ominous looking weather forecast, yesterday’s meeting was called off at around 11am. It proved the right call, as Scunthorpe was hit by heavy rain in early evening. Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “The forecast was spot on. We simply wouldn’t have got the meeting on. “Thank you to the Sheffield promotion for their co-operation in agreeing to the new date. With no home meeting next Friday due to the Premier League Pairs, we’d have been left with a three week gap between home meetings, had we not managed to re-stage this meeting within that gap. “The weather is due to improve before next Wednesday. It should be a real cracker between two sides looking for local supremacy.”
  15. Blimey, the Monarchs fans are running scared. They're trawling through the rulebook, trying to find ways to stop a Tigers victory on Sunday. Come on Glasgow. If for no other reason than to stop Mr Blobby posting 22, 23, 24, etc on threads. I think Blobby has been possessed by Count Von Count from Seasame Street. All the best Rob
  16. I think Peterborough are now in a much better financial position, now that they're out of the Elite League. All the best Rob
  17. Couldn't see how it was going to be on, with that forecast. Big band of heavy rain due. Thankful of the early call off, before I tried to negotiate a different route up, due to the A43 being closed due to Silverstone. All the best Rob
  18. Two things: 1. Everyone is well aware that Edinburgh are still unbeaten 2. We can count Come on the Weegies on Sunday... sort out Mr Blobby and his smug pals All the best Rob
  19. Looking forward to tonight - come on Scorps. All the best Rob
  20. FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions will be looking to bounce straight back from a heavy defeat at Newcastle, when they entertain local rivals Sheffield Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday (7.30pm), with precious Premier League points up for grabs. The Scorpions slipped to a 22-67 defeat at Brough Park on Sunday against the Newcastle Diamonds, with only Thomas Jorgensen and David Howe offering any resistance. It came two days after Scunthorpe had picked up a 58-38 home win against the Diamonds, with Ashley Birks and Josh Auty both collecting paid maximums. It was feared that Jorgensen had picked up a broken scaphoid following a Heat 8 at Brough Park. However such fears proved unfounded. The Dane tweeted on Monday, following a check-up: “Update on wrist. Nothing broken. Just badly brushed and ligaments are stretched. A few days off and I'll be good to go.” Jorgensen is set to return on Friday, with the Scorpions expected to be at full strength as they take on their local rivals. Scunthorpe are keen to show last Sunday was just a blip. The team remain third in the Premier League table and if they win on Friday and Ipswich lose at Plymouth on the same night, then the Scorpions could move up to second. Results between the Scorpions and the Tigers have been topsy-turvy in 2014. Scunthorpe have travelled back from Owlerton three times with four points, but lost their home League Cup against Sheffield on March 30, the opening Scorpions’ meeting of the season at the Eddie Wright Raceway. Promoter Rob Godfrey said: “When Sheffield were last here, we were still awaiting for Ryan Douglas to arrive after his visa issues over the winter, and they picked our pockets and took the win. “We’re determined not to let them win at the Eddie Wright Raceway again. Since then we’ve won three times at their place, so we have back the local bragging rights and we’d like to keep it that way. “Our big defeat at Newcastle was a one-off; it was one of those nights for us. We won’t be dwelling on it. “Apart from Edinburgh, nearly every team has suffered a heavy defeat at one point or another this season. For example, Somerset went to Ipswich and got hammered there.” Godfrey is hoping for a bumper attendance for the visit of Sheffield. He enthused: “What’s almost guaranteed is that it will be another cracking local derby – clashes between the two teams are always hotly contested. “We won’t take Sheffield lightly, despite their current league position. I’m sure they’ll bring plenty of supporters with them up the M18, looking to get one over us, and likewise we need our fans there in good voice getting behind our lads. “Our last two home performances have been strong, and we need to put in another professional home performance and pick up the three points.” There are 24 heats of action in total on Friday night, with a nine-heat second half, including a Midland Development League match between Castleford and Stoke. Admission prices for Friday: Adult: £15.00 Student/OAP: £13.00 Child (10 – 17): £5.00 Child (0 – 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Family Ticket £35 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-17) Match Programme: £1.00 Expected teams for Friday (English unless stated): FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. 21. Uh-oh, Tsunami will be changing the locks and forcing TWK to sleep on the streets again. Calm down lads, you won by 45 points. If you're like this when you win, what are you like when you lose? All the best Rob
  22. Tweet from Tommy The Gun: Update on wrist: Nothing broken. Just badly brushed and ligaments are stretched. A few days off and I'll be good to go All the best Rob
  23. Suspected broken scaphoid. But no-one is sure yet. It's swollen up at the moment; once the swelling has gone down, the picture will be clearer. All the best Rob
