HUGE WEEKEND AHEAD FOR SCORPIONS HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions commence their Premier League play-off campaign this weekend with home and away fixtures to 2003, 2008 & 2010 Premier League Champions, the Edinburgh Monarchs. The Scorpions travel up to Scotland to Armadale on Friday (7.30pm), before bringing the Monarchs back to the Eddie Wright Raceway on early Sunday evening at 5pm. It is the first time that the Scorpions have ever featured in the play-offs at Premier League level. They compete in a group of three teams, which in addition to Scunthorpe and Edinburgh, also features the Workington Comets. Scunthorpe earned their placed in the play-offs by finishing second in the regular league table after a storming finish to their Premier League campaign, which saw the Scorpions win 13, draw 1 and lose only 2 of their final 16 Premier League fixtures, after a tough start which saw them lose 6 of their opening 8 league fixtures in a tricky period in May and June. The Scorpions are arguably the form team in the division, having picked up 22 points out of 22 in their final 7 league matches. Those final 7 fixtures consisted of six home victories at the Eddie Wright Raceway, plus a 54-39 away win at Edinburgh, where the Scorpions return on Friday. Team manager Richard Hollingsworth said: “I am genuinely proud that we finished second in the league table, just one point behind Newcastle. “It’s not been a straight forward season by any means; we were struggling with injuries from day one when Tom Armstrong crashed out of the opening meeting of the season. We’ve also been without David Howe for the vast majority of the season; we can count the number of times we’ve tracked a full side without guests or rider replacement on one hand. “Injuries, sadly, are part and parcel of the sport, and there are other teams who have also overcome problems on that front as well. “We knew all along that we had a good side this season. The addition of Nick Morris and Gary Irving did help to transform our results, but we had a team largely consisting of young riders who we knew would just get stronger and stronger as the season continued. Even Josh Auty, our No 1, is still just 22 years old. “We’ve seen Thomas Jorgensen (now sadly injured) and Ashley Birks both come on in leaps-and-bounds, and it’s been particularly satisfying to see Michael Palm Toft hit form, after a difficult patch earlier in the season.” Hollingsworth is now concentrating on the four play-off group matches ahead. “The clock is now reset to zero; everyone starts from scratch again in the play-offs. However, what we do take into the play-offs is a feeling of self-confidence and belief, built up by a very good set of results over the last two to three months. We honestly believe we are capable of winning our play-off group and then winning the final. “It certainly won’t be easy, because all the teams in the play-offs are quality sides. It’s impossible to get into the top six without having a good side. However, we have beaten all our opponents at some point during the season, and we will be looking to do that again in the play-offs. “Over the next four meetings, every single match point and indeed race point could prove to be crucial.” Meanwhile, everyone at Scunthorpe is looking forward to the weekend. “Edinburgh have been one of the teams to beat at this level”, explained Hollingsworth. “The Monarchs were league champions in our first year in the Premier League in 2008. These are the kind of big fixtures we’ve looked forward to for a long time – to take on teams like Edinburgh in the play-offs. “And while they are a big team, we can beat them. We’ve already done the double over the Monarchs in our regular league fixtures. “We bring in Kevin Doolan as a guest at Edinburgh on Friday, while Jason Bunyan (fresh from 12+1 against Glasgow last week) is again our guest at the Eddie Wright Raceway. Kevin and Jason fit in with our regular riders very well. “It’s a cliché to say each week that it’s the biggest meeting in the history of the track, but in our case, it’s absolutely true. Last Friday, we were involved in one of two fixtures that determined who finished top of the table – a situation we’d never been in before at this level. “And then the play-offs are another step up again, because these are the actual meetings that determine who wins the championship. “Sunday is a huge night at the Eddie Wright Raceway. Our admission prices have been pegged at the usual levels, at just £14 for adults, and we hope the public of Scunthorpe will respond with a bumper turn-out and really get behind the boys, as we endeavour to reach the Grand Final.” Sunday’s action is concluded by an eight-heat youth 125cc championship that sees eight of the stars of tomorrow battling it out for a trophy. Hans made his intention to retire known a year in advance. He was replaced by the next rider in the series, not a rider from the GP Challenge. Seems consistent with Crump being replaced by AJ. Ironically, I think Hans would have stood an excellent chance of being World Champion in 2000, because both the riders who finished above him in 1999 had troubled seasons in 2000 (Rickardsson changed machinery and it didn't work, while Gollob suffered an injury in a car accident). However, he'd gone 23 years without virtually a single injury (I think a collarbone in '92 was his worst break), and wanted to get out fit and healthy. But I think he may have outscored Loram over six rounds - he finished '99 in excellent form. All the best Rob

And so here we go - the first fixture in Group 2 of the play-offs. Scunny have Kevin Doolan and R/R to cover for David and the Tommy Gun. Last time, Scunny won 54-39, despite being without Nick Morris (who was riding for Australia in the Under-21 World Team Cup). Can the Scorpions sting the Monarchs again, or will the Monarchs strike back? All the best Rob

Not really. Rob Godfrey realised all along Newcastle wouldn't pick you guys, so there was no point in selecting you until the final choice. All the best Rob -

I would say it's very, very unlikely, because they are two classy riders. Probably their worst score of the season in both cases; all riders have some tracks that they don't like as much as others. All the best Rob -

Not really - if I was I would be doing it with all the subtlety of a brick We'll beat whoever we have in the play-off groups But was interested when I came across the scorers from this meeting yesterday. I assumed until then that Newcastle would, given the choice, take Leicester as their first pick. Then I looked what Robbo and Lemo scored there last time and thought, maybe not after all. Not to say that they still won't - but it's certainly not a clear-cut choice. All the best Rob Speedibee, it's the same scoring system as in the league i.e. no aggregate points. All the best Rob -

In Newcastle's 46-44 narrow defeat at Leicester on June 9th, it was only for Worralls (with 26 points between them) who kept the scores close. Lemo scored 3.... while Robbo scored just a single point. With both Worralls injured, I'm not sure that the Diamonds will pick Leicester as their first choice. In any case, hoping for a Diamonds v Scunny final; they are the best two teams in the league, so I hope they are the finalists. All the best Rob -
Good luck to the Scorpions tonight. After Leicester's defeat night at Redcar, it's more-or-less (barring a mathematical miracle), now a straight fight between Scunny and Newcastle in their respective fixtures tonight to see who finishes top of the table. Scunthorpe need to outscore Newcaslte by two PL points e.g. if Scunny took all 3 points tonight, we need Newcastle to score only 1 point. C'MON THE SCORPIONS!!!! All the best Rob

Difficult to discuss this one yet, as Newcastle, Scunthorpe and Leicester still have a chance of topping the table. All the best Rob -
Well done to the IOW - in particular young Adam Ellis - for putting a big performance when they needed it. I do feel sorry for Rye House, who may well finish ahead of Stoke, once the final table is completed. Given the awful weather throughout the year, plus the fact that some tracks (e.g. King's Lynn) have been trying to fit in more than one level of racing, surely the cut-off for the NL could have been moved back to the end of September? That would have been the common sense thing to do. All the best Rob

MASSIVE NIGHT FOR SCORPIONS ON FRIDAY, AS THEY ATTEMPT TO FINISH TOP OF THE TABLE! HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions continue the exciting build-up to the play-offs, as they bid to finish top of the regular Premier League table on Friday night. The Scorpions will be out to take three Premier League points from a vital clash against the Glasgow Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday (7.30pm) – and hope that other results go their way. The Scorpions are already assured of their best ever Premier League finish (their previous best being fifth in 1983), but it’s now a case of bagging a top two place, or even top position. The situation regarding the top four is currently as follows: NEWCASTLE DIAMONDS Current league position: 1st. Current Premier League Points: 48. Current Race Points Difference: +158. Remaining fixtures: Plymouth (away) – Friday 21st Sept. Maximum Premier League Points: 52. SOMERSET REBELS Current league position: 2nd. Current Premier League Points: 48. Current Race Points Difference: +143. Remaining fixtures: None. Maximum Premier League Points: 48. SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS Current league position: 3rd. Current Premier League Points: 47. Current Race Points Difference: +91. Remaining fixtures: Glasgow (home) – Friday 21st Sept. Maximum Premier League Points: 50. LEICESTER LIONS Current league position: 4th. Current Premier League Points: 41. Current Race Points Difference: +12. Remaining fixtures: Redcar (away) – Thursday 20th Sept, Edinburgh (away) – Friday 21st Sept, Workington (away) – Saturday 22nd Sept. Maximum Premier League Points: 53. Therefore, Leicester can reach the highest points tally (53), but in order to do so they would have to score three away wins of 7 points or more, on three successive nights. The Lions face a Redcar team who have really started to get dialled into their home track in recent weeks, an Edinburgh side who lost to Scunthorpe in wet conditions at home but otherwise have in good form around Armadale, and finally Workington, who have an unbeaten home league record but are currently decimated by injury. It is possible seeing the Lions take wins in one or two of those meetings, but to win all three would be a tall order. If they win all three, they would certainly be deserving of the top spot. But it’s more likely for the top spot to be between Newcastle and Scunthorpe. The Diamonds are away at bottom club Plymouth on Friday night. However, the Devils will be going out to win the meeting by at least seven points, and therefore avoid finishing bottom of the 2012 Premier League by climbing ahead of Sheffield. That would clinch a place in the end-of-season competition that features the 7th to 12th placed teams for the Devils. Newcastle have a superior race points difference to Scunthorpe, and therefore the Scorpions need to outscore the Diamonds by two league points on Friday. If the Scorpions were to win on Friday, and also take the third league point for winning by more than 7 points at home, the Scorpions would move onto 50 points. That would leave Newcastle needing a draw or a win at Plymouth to edge out the Scorpions. If Newcastle failed to score any points at all at Plymouth (i.e. a loss by 7 points or more), then Scunthorpe could top the table by taking just two points off Glasgow (i.e. a win by less than 7 points), provided Leicester (with their inferior race points difference) scored 8 or less points from their three away meetings on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Team manager Richard Hollingsworth said: “Friday night is THE night, where in all probability, the team who finishes top the table is likely to be decided. I’m sure fans with smart phones will be following the updates at Plymouth and Edinburgh on Friday night, while watching the action unfold in front of them at the Eddie Wright Raceway at the same time. “However, for the riders and management, we can’t allow for that sort of distraction. Our task will be simple. And that will be to make sure we score all three Premier League points against Glasgow. “We never under-estimate the opposition, and Glasgow do pose a threat. The Tigers pushed us close in a curtailed League Cup at the Eddie Wright Raceway earlier in the season (final score 40-34), and were 14-10 ahead when the Premier League fixture was initially washed out on July 20th. “What has delighted me in recent weeks has been our all-round strength at the Eddie Wright Raceway. Hugh Skidmore was a very competent guest last Friday, and had three very good rides out of four, and yet he finished as our bottom scorer! Michael (Palm Toft) and Gary (Irving) have been consistently banging in the points from reserve, as have the whole team. “We have Robin Aspegren as a guest for Thomas Jorgensen on Friday. Robin acquitted himself very well last time he guested for us, when he came in at the last minute to guest for Nick Morris against Plymouth. We were very impressed by him, and it has led to this repeat booking. It could well be that Robin plays a part for us in the play-offs as well.” Glasgow have Poole’s Sam Masters as a guest for their injured No 1 Joe Screen. Scunthorpe have scored 19 out of 19 Premier League points, since defeat at Workington on August 11th. Since the Scorpions have picked up a club record away win at Edinburgh (54-39), plus home wins against Sheffield (51-42), Somerset (50-40), Plymouth (54-39), Berwick (58-34) and Redcar (55-38). Hollingsworth enthused: “We’ve hit form at just the right time of the season. We want to continue that on Friday night, and take the momentum through into the play-offs. “There’s also the chance for us to complete an unbeaten home record at this level for only the second time, and for the first time since 1983. We’ve only dropped two Premier League points in our previous 11 home matches so far – to Newcastle and Berwick. “It’s going to be an exciting few weeks, but we will take it one step at a time. “The first step is to beat Glasgow on Friday, and keep our fingers crossed that results elsewhere go our way. Even though the championship is decided in the play-offs, finishing top of the Premier League table for the first time ever would mean so much to Scunthorpe Speedway”, concluded Hollingsworth. Teams for Friday (English unless stated): Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. Josh Auty, 2. David Howe R/R, 3. Robin Aspegren (Sweden), 4. Ashley Birks, 5. Nick Morris (Australia), 6. Michael Palm Toft (Denmark), 7. Gary Irving. Glasgow Tigers: 1. Sam Masters (Australia), 2. Mason Campton (Australia), 3. Josh Grajczonek (Australia), 4. Henning Bager (Denmark), 5. James Grieves (Scotland), 6. James McBain (Scotland), 7. Charles Wright.
