  1. Great Britain is not a political entity. It's the name of the island. All the best Rob
  2. Yup, I know that. You missed the point that political entities cannot enter the Olympics. It's old ground and been discussed on here several times before. All the best Rob
  3. An Olympic team which represent a geographical region, not a political entity. Hence the team being called Great Britain & Northern Ireland. All the best Rob

  7. SCORPIONS LOOK TO SHOOT DOWN ROCKETS FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions are looking to record their first Premier League win of the season, when they entertain the Rye House Rockets at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening (7.30pm). The Scorpions picked up a well-deserved draw at Rye House last Saturday, and looking to build on that result. Scunthorpe’s current record in the Premier League doesn’t make pleasant reading at first glance: Matches 4 Wins 0 Drawn 1 Lost 3 Points 3. However, three of those four meetings have been away from home, while the only two of those meetings that the Scorpions have left empty-handed have been the home-and-away clashes to reigning Premier League champions Edinburgh, who appear to have again put together a very strong side in 2015. Having dropped three points at home to the Monarchs, but having picked up three points away from home - one point from a narrow defeat at Berwick (44-46) and two points from the draw at Rye House (45-45) - the Scorpions are currently on parity. Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “We need to beat Rye House around the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday. “But we can’t afford to be complacent. It was a great performance to take a draw from Hoddesdon on Saturday, but Rye House are not going to roll over on Friday.” The Rockets include England international Edward Kennett at No 1, who scored an 18-point maximum on Saturday. Godfrey adds: “Edward Kennett is a class act, while we all know how well Anders Mellgren can go around our place. “But Alex Davies had a fantastic meeting at home to Edinburgh, and likewise Theo Pijper put in a great performance at Rye House. “We need Alex and Theo, along with Josh (Auty) and Wilko (Carl Wilkinson), to be in top form, because we’re a little exposed at reserve without Nike Lunna, who is one of the reserves at the Finnish Grand Prix this weekend. “It will be a great experience for Nike, rubbing shoulders with the best riders in the world, and I’m chuffed for him. “However, he is now on a 3.00 average, so we’re restricted on guests. We’ve gone for Rafal Konopka, who showed plenty of speed around here a few weeks ago for Redcar and scored paid six. It would have been more, but for a couple of falls, so we’ll get Rafal nicely settled down for Friday’s meeting and see how he goes.” Matt Williamson is again set to guest for Ellis Perks on Friday night, while the Scorpions will continue to use rider replacement for David Howe, who is still on the sidelines with a shoulder injury. Admission prices for Friday: Adult: £15.00 Student/OAP: £13.00 Child (10 – 17): £5.00 Child (0 – 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Family Ticket £35 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-17) Match Programme: £1.00 Expected teams for Friday: FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance: 1. 8. The new stadium looks brilliant... wow!!! Good to see the place packed out as well. All the best Rob
  9. It's been good racing every meeting so far this year mate... hope you see a good meeting, even if I appreciate you'd have much preferred to see the Glasgow Tigers in action. I won't be there, first Scorpions' meeting I've missed this year, as I'm going to Finland/Russia this weekend to maybe watch some speedway or maybe another rider protest, we'll see. All the best Rob
  10. Paulco, were you going on Friday? It's very wrong to call this off less than a week before the meeting, when there's opposing fans travelling down from Scotland. All the best Rob
  11. Spin King, that's speedway. We'll take the two points, thanks very much. Scorpions now back to parity - three points dropped at home, and three points gained away. All the best Rob
  12. SPEEDWAY FOR A FIVER, AS YOUNGSTERS TAKE SPOTLIGHT THE VERY BEST young riders in Great Britain descend on Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday (start-time 3pm), for the opening round of the Mitas British Youth Championship. It’s a bumper day of action, with no fewer than 51 riders, all aged 16 or below, due to compete in 55 races – the largest-ever entry for a round of the championship. And the meeting is very good value for money, with an admission price of £5 for all adults, while all accompanied children will be admitted free. There are a host of riders from the amateur meetings held at Scunthorpe on display. Scunthorpe’s Youth Co-ordinator Richard Hollingsworth said: “As always, we’re massively proud to stage a round of the British Youth Championship. Quite a few faces will be familiar to those who attend our amateur meetings here at the Eddie Wright Raceway. “There are over fifty riders competing in total on Sunday, and I don’t think that figure has been achieved before for a round of the championship. It should be a great afternoon’s speedway. “Josh Auty, the No 1 for the Scunthorpe Scorpions, was the first-ever winner of the 500cc championship in 2004. Who knows, a future Scorpions’ No 1 might be on parade on Sunday.” Admission Prices for Sunday: All adults: £5.00 Child (0 – 17) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Sunday’s line-up: 500cc class: Sam Woolley, Mitchell Beckett, Jack Parkinson, Sam Wright, Kieron Douglas, Jamie Halder, Saul Bulley, Lewis Whitmore, Luke McKenna, Jack Thomas, Macauley Leek, Stephen Whitehouse, William O’Keefe, Sam Chapman. 250cc class: Chad Wirtzfeld, Tom Brennan, Kyle Bickley, Daniel Gilkes, Jordan Jenkins, Luke Woodhull, Ben Woodhull, Kean Dicken, Anders Rowe. 150cc class: Jordan Palin, Sam Stead, Nathan Ablitt, Jolyon West, Jason Edwards, James Laker, Kieron McCoy, Ryan Morris, Taylor Hampshire, Lewis Millar, Leon Flint, Mason O’Rourke, Sam Hagon. 125cc class: Luke Moore, Harry McGurk, Sam McGurk, Taya Thirtle, Joe Thompson, Dan Thompson, Sheldon Davies, Mickie Simpson, Bailey Fellows, James Hitchen, Jack Wright, Jay Farish, Alex Goldsbrough, Niall Cleaver, Corban Pavitt.
  13. Yeah, Rob G doesn't like to mess about. He was onto the ref, when the first meeting didn't start bang on 3pm on Monday. It's the way it should be. All the best Rob
  14. Anyone mentitoned the 2005 Conference League Pairs at Wimbledon yet? 4 hours and 15 minutes to stage 19 races. All the best Rob
  15. Wolbert is going to make his average look daft this year, especially if he stays away from dodgy burgers. Blobby, the Monarchs were deserving winners yesterday, but the final scoreline flattered you just slightly. It was nip and tuck for most of the afternoon. All the best Rob
  16. Some terrific racing at the EWR yesterday. Fair play to Edinburgh, who were derserving winners. Great to see Alex Davies having such a good meeting... for once, Craig Cook didn't leave with a maximum. All the best Rob

  18. Davies is on a 20-match rolling average, while Lunna isn't. All the best Rob Not sure as yet, since Buxton is off today. All the best Rob
  19. Swings and roundabouts. On the other hand, it could be pointed out that Doolan was an excellent guest and in scoring 8+2 before Heat 15, he was only beaten once in his four programmed rides, so Sedgmen couldn't have done much better. And Cook only missed one programmed ride - Heat 13. Meanwhile, Alex Davies lost points through a fall, and David Howe and Ryan Douglas were not missing for one ride like Cook, they were missing for all four rides apiece. With both teams at full strength, it might have been closer or it might have been a bigger Monarchs win. We'll never know. And I reckon it's going to be a cracker between the two sides on Monday. Are you coming, Blobby? All the best Rob

  21. SCORPIONS’ LEGEND WAYNE CARTER BACK IN ACTION SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS’ former captain and club legend Wayne Carter will ride for the Halifax Dukes in the Scunthorpe vs Halifax National League challenge match that forms the second half of next week’s mouth-watering Bank Holiday Monday double-header at the Eddie Wright Raceway. The start-time of the preceding Scunthorpe v Edinburgh Premier League meeting is 3pm, with Stags v Dukes to follow. Carter, now 44, was a leading light for the Scorpions in their very first season at the Eddie Wright Raceway in 2005, before injury forced his retirement during 2006. But he has remained an integral part of the club as its training officer. Stags’ team manager Richard Hollingsworth said: “It’ll be great to see Wayne back in a competitive meeting. He comes from Halifax, so he was the natural choice to spearhead the Dukes’ line-up, alongside Max Clegg. “Of course, Wayne also has major connections with Scunthorpe Speedway, both on-and-off the track. He was the first-ever captain of the Scunthorpe Scorpions at this particular track, and he was a near 10.00 man for us in 2005. “If anything his contribution behind the scenes has been even greater. Sometimes I think that maybe not enough is said of the great work he does at this club. “Nearly the whole of the novice class at our regular Amateur Meetings have ridden on the mini-track with Wayne. “He also has training sessions on the main track, where nearly all those attending started out on the mini-track under his tutelage. “It is incredible what he does and we get so much positive feedback about the help he has given riders, be it ones who are just coming for a one-off session or those who want to progress in the sport. “If ever there was an unsung hero at Scunthorpe, it is Wayne Carter.” Teams for Scunthorpe vs Halifax: SCUNTHORPE STAGS: 1. Lee Payne 2. Robert Parker 3. Ryan Blacklock 4. Rob Shuttleworth 5. Adam Extance 6. Jamie Halder 7. Luke Whitehead HALIFAX DUKES: 1. Wayne Carter 2. Paul Burnett 3. Adam Kirby 4. David Speight 5. Max Clegg 6. Sam Darroch 7. Bradley Seal
  22. BANK HOLIDAY FEAST OF ACTION AT THE EDDIE WRIGHT RACEDAY FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance, stage their first home Premier League fixture of the season against reigning league champions Edinburgh Monarchs at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm). There are 30-heats of speedway action on offer in total, with the second half consisting of the Scunthorpe Stags taking on the Halifax Dukes in a National League challenge match, where much of the interest will focus on the return of 2005 Scorpions’ skipper Wayne Carter to action. The Bank Holiday bonanza of action completes a busy weekend for the Scorpions. The team travel up to Scotland to face Edinburgh on Friday, and then venture to Newcastle on Sunday, for the first leg of their Knockout Cup tie with the Diamonds. Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “Bank Holiday Monday is a big day for this club. “Firstly, we need to get our home Premier League fixtures off to a flying start. That’s not going to be easy to do, because Edinburgh have started the season well, while we’re still finding our feet. “We will battle and fight all the way on Monday. Every point will count. We need a backs-to-the-wall performance, to take the points, and then our Premier League campaign will kick on from there.” Godfrey also stresses the importance of a good attendance on Monday. “The crowds that come to the 12 Premier League meetings at the Eddie Wright Raceway this season, the first one of which takes place on Monday, are the key to the future of this club. “I was honest with our supporters at the end of last season, and told them the crowds we needed for this year. “There’s so much I believe we do right. We provide what I believe is the best racetrack in the country. We put on a slick show and don’t hang around. “We’ve tweaked a few things this year at the request of the fans. For example, when we win at home, the riders are dropped off at the starting gate, so that the supporters have more of a chance to inter-act with them. “We treat entertainment right at the top of the list. We had quite a few new supporters here this year who had not been to speedway before and from the emails we’ve received since, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and couldn’t believe what a great night out the speedway is. “Our hardcore fans are a great bunch, and I would just like to re-iterate to them to keep on spreading the word, because once we entice new supporters along, I’m sure they will love what they see and come back.” This weekend sees changes in the riding order for the Scorpions, with the issue of the new Green Sheet averages. ‘Mr Entertainment’ Josh Auty, following a strong start to the season, moves to No 1, Nike Lunna shifts up to No 3, Theo Pijper takes over at No 5, and trump-card Alex Davies will drop to No 7. The Scorpions will again be without David Howe, who is recovering from damaging his shoulder in a workshop accident, and also have an injury doubt in Ellis Perks, who took a hefty fall at Kent on Monday, while representing his National League club, Cradley Heath and damaged his knee ligaments. Perks will miss the trip to Edinburgh on Friday, with Scunthorpe asset Matt Williamson covering for him. Perks will have a run-out at Buxton on Sunday, and if fit, will take his place at Newcastle on Sunday night. If he is not fit, then Tom Stokes will guest for him at Newcastle, while Williamson will again be brought in on Monday at No. 6. Bank Holiday Monday’s adult admission price for the double-header is £17. It’s just £2 more than a single Premier League meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway, for 15 extra heats of action. A full and exciting afternoon of racing is ahead. DON’T MISS IT! Admission prices for Bank Holiday Monday: Adult: £17.00 Student/OAP: £15.00 Child (10 – 17): £5.00 Child (0 – 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Family Ticket £39 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-17) Match Programme: £1.00 Expected teams for Bank Holiday Monday: FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance: 1.
