  1. If all Elite League matches were on a Monday night that would be the end of Speedway. How many people do you think would bother going to live speedway when you can watch it for nothing .on TV. Mind you if it were taken off TV more people would go but certainly not a Monday
  2. You have to remember that I am basing Poole at 5/1 on the current team they have released . If Darcy Ward starts the season for them I would make them 5/4 As soon as Betfair make a market I will be putting my odds up as I always do
  3. I seem to remember Henry Kroeze scoring a 24 point maximum for Halifax back in the 1970's
  4. Thanks for pointing out I missed Wolverhampton which would be 12/1. I put it in the Elite League as that where the teams come from. Do you think I should have done another one for the Premier League as well
  5. Although a few teams have not completed their line up this is how i would bet on the 2015 season ELITE LEAGUE 3/1 Coventry 7/2 Kings Lynn 5/1 Belle Vue 5/1 Poole 6/1 Lakeside 10/1 Swindon 20/1 Leicester PREMIERLEAGUE 4/1 Edinburgh 5/1 Sheffield 7/1 Somerset 8/1 Ipswich 9/1 Peterborough 10/1 Newcastle 12/1 Scunthorpe 14/1 Workington 14/1 Rye House 16/1 Glasgow 16/1 Redcar 18/1 Berwick 20/1 Plymouth
  6. Tommy Price will have to be the first for me
  7. Luck has nothing to do with it. The main reason why all these tracks have gone is because the value of the land. If it were not some of the local councils making a stand there would be even less tracks than there are now. Both Wimbledon and Oxford stadiums are being held up by their local councils making a stand. This does not only affect speedway . In London there used to be 33 greyhound stadium some having speedway as well. There are now only two Wimbledon and Romford. Unless the local council make a stand Coventry will go as well and possibly Swindon. When you think that in Southern England plots tp put houses on are worth £100,000 + in makes these stadiums highly sought after if you can get planning permission for them to put houseson them
  8. There must be something wrong with the FIM case otherwise they would not keep putting it back. There case is too weak. No evidence offered. Case dismissed
  9. When I said an almost season opener , I meant it was the second meeting of the season. Where did I say current world champions?
  10. In an almost season opener at Plough Lane Wimbledon in 1956 there was a Best Pairs Competition that included five world Champions. They wereRonnie Moore (13 pts), Peter Craven (7), Tommy Price(2), Ove Fundin(12), and Barry Briggs(9). Brian Crutcher joint top scored with Ronnie Moore on thirteen points Has there ever been a meeting with five world champions in it?
  11. It's almost a certainty that the improvements have been done by Speedworth. I would think that they have now got a new long lease a couple of years back with an offer to buy the stadium. If they had not got a long lease they would not be spending the amount of money that they have done . I am sure that the Ipswich Speedway Ltd (the freeholders) have vertually never spent any money on the Stadium so why should they now. Whatever happens they still get their rent.
  12. Perhaps they are going to change the starting gate from where it is over to the back straight. This would make sense as the new stands are on that side and surely it is only a matter of time before the present start side buildings are pulled down. How many tracks have the main seating area on the opposite side of the track to the start line
  13. I thin you will find that the one lap dash races did not take place in the 1970//1 but back in the 1940/50's There were various second half races which were raced on 4/3/2/1 laps. It was not unusual for the whole of the second half to be raced over three laps Going back to 1947 these were the Wembley track records 4 Laps Clutch start Lionel Van Praag 73.2 secsJuly 15th 1939 42.25 mph 3 Laps Clutch Start Wilbur Lamoreaux 56.2 secs August 4th 1938 41.27mph 2 Lap RollingStart LVP 36.00 secs May 19th 1938 42.95 mph 1 Lap Flying Start Again LVP and WL 17.4 secs 44.44mph Comparing these times with I think is still the Wembley track record of Dave Jessup of 67 seconds set in heat 10 of the 1978 World Championship Final . shows how much faster Speedway had become and is even faster today
  14. That's because the old London fans to not live there anymore. Places like Ealing Road, Wembley are dominated by shops owned by Asians some of which are open 24 hours a day . Go back 50 years and there were two Indian restaurants which were the only premises owned by Asians. Like here the whole demography of London has changed
  15. Especially as Speedway gets nothing out of it at all# Lets get bac to a World Speedway Championship that benefits Speedway and not a commercial company. Th prize money paid out is a pittance for three hour live sports action. There has got to be something wrong when riders cannot make it pay
  16. Best team rider ever . I do not think that the late John Berry would agree with that . He was a headache to deal with but was still a great rider and showman
  17. Unbelievable as it may sound Norbold gives his opinion of who were the best riders in the 1950's yet never saw a race during that period. You could not make it up could you!
  18. Baldyman, have you been at the jungle Juice over Christmas . Are you seriously saying Ipswich will only finish ahead of three teams next season. I would think there is not one person in the country except you that would say Ipswich would finish no higher than tenth place. Please write in anybody and say you would think Ipswich Witches will finish tenth or lower
  19. Best gater most certainly was the King of the Millenium Ivan Mauger. Not only was his gating electric but he would get the other riders at it at the starting gate.. Nowday's it is a bit anoying that a rider makes a great start and the referee orders a restart as they were too quick..There has to be a better system than we have at the moment so great starts are not penalized .
  20. Not really correct though that Peter Craven had a far better record in the league Surely you can only compare their records in the years they both rode and the points they scored which were 1951 FW 279 PC 0 1952 FW 333 PC 3 1953 FW 161 PC 70 1954 FW 240 PC 194 1955 FW 182 PC 255 1956 FW 38 PC 194 That makes a points total of Freddie Williams 1233 and Peter Craven 716 Not only did Freddie Williams have the best British World Final finishes of 2 firsts and one second in the 1950's ,no other Britain ever did that well in three finals in the history of Speedway in Individual Finals or even Grand Prix.
  21. As I saw all the riders in the 1950's I would rank Freddie Williams top and Peter Craven second Freddie Williams won two world titles and once runner up compared to Peter Craven's one win and one third. So in terms of achievement Freddie Williams should be top.
  22. As the Premier League never started until 1995 where do all these riders keep coming from that people are posting on here
  23. Chris Holder at 10/1 for me ,perhaps a saver on Majic at 18/1
  24. The answer is very easy. The champions of nearly all sports are far superior today than in the past. If you want to compare different eras you need a common denominator for instance Snooker Joe Davis was worls champion for about 25 years yet he was in his 40's before he made a 100 break. Neil Robertson made 100 last season. Athletics. Just look at the times achieved today compared to yesteryear Darts The averages in Darts competiton are getting higher every year Tennis- Just look at the Wimbledon tennis finals from the 1970's .Today would be classed as a local tennis club match Boxing -Possibly harder in the old days but diet and training far better today Football/Rugby- Fitness much greater today Even sports like Ten Pin Bowling-Go back 40 years a 300 game was a great event today they have 3 x 300 games Cricket- The worlds highest score in Test Matches keeps gong up
