British Sgp Decline
mickthemuppet replied to deadmau5's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
So perhaps young Orion you can tell me who has been the most consistent riders in British and Polish speedway in the last ten years than. When was Leigh Adams not in the top three averages in GB then. When was Tomasaz Gollob not the top rider in Polish Leagues. Perhaps you would care to name the world champions in F1 without winning "antyhink" then . Number One is not world champion . In golf many numbers ones have been that for less than a month, or in one case one week. There is a world of difference between World Champion and being number one. With the amount of replies you make on this forum this year, you could be number one but not world champion, almost certainly many regard you as a number two -
British Sgp Decline
mickthemuppet replied to deadmau5's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
One of the benefits of the old system of one off world finals was that any profits made went back into Speedway. The prize money for the present GP's is a pittance. Where does the rest of the money go,certainly not back into Speedway. Young Orion there are still no hopers in the GP's at present and there has been every year so that is no change on the previous system. Probably Leigh Adams and Tomasz Gollob have been the best two riders in the last decade but neither has been world champion. I bet they both would have been under the old system. Then Mark Loram became become a world champion without winning a GP that year. Any other Sports where you can be World Champion without winning anything. -

Well said Parsloes. Nothing can ever beat the excitement of a World Final at Wembley. Bring back the old individual world Championship -
British Sgp Decline

I have watched every British Grand prix on Sky Sports. This year I was away and watched it on the internet and found a polish programme and an english one (but not Sky channel). This was not available two or three years ago and more and more people are watching speedway on the net. These viewers will not be counted but must be rising every year. There must be a time in the near future when it is not worth paying a Sky sports Subscription especially as mine has now gone up to £47 (which started at £4) Nodody can tell how many people watch a programme, so the figures are completly useless. How many people watched the football live and watched the GP the next day? -

It would be quite interesting to see which people would regard as the top 5 sports in the world .I would certainly put tennis in the top 5. Undoubtably Football would be clear top but what would the next 5 be? Hunstanton is the big tennis tournament this week. I actually said more countries play Tennis than any other sport not how many people in those countries play it. -

Young Humphrey I am very suprised with you answer , obviously you know very little about tennis. If I said there is a tournament in England this week where there are 1400 competitors which is three times as many as Wimbledon you would not have a clue where it is. More countries in the world play Tennis than any other sport. -

When you say Speedway is just a filler sport for SKY, I have watched a tennis tournament throughout the week live for sometimes 8 hours a day. When they have got to the final on the Saturday the final was not show live and a recording was shown later on in the evening. So you could have 40 hours of live tennis and the final recorded. I would not regard Tennis as a minority sport. -

The Grand Prix are the worst thing that could have happened to British Speedway. The time must come one day when riders must choose between GP's and league racing, especially if the GP's expand to more countries. Riders drop Britsh League matches if they are on a Friday and Saturday and even Thursday's now. They have killed Speedway in this country on what are the two best night's of the week(Friday and Saturday) for racing. Take tonight's Belle Vue v Poole meeting, perhaps 1000 punters. On a Saturday night maybe 2000-3000. Nobody would run on a Monday night is they could have a Saturday. The decline in British Speedway mainly began when the GP's started on TV. The GP's bring nothing into British Speedway and how BSI got control of this arm of Speedway is a tragedy. At least with the old individual world championship the profits went back into Speedway. I wonder where all the money goes to from Cardiff. Somewhere in the region of £1.5+ million, is generated. It certainly does not go to the riders who get roughly £75.000 between them which has to pay for all their expenses including mechanics, travel and accomodation. What Speedway could do with a share of those profits. The sooner that Speedway gets back to how it used to be with weekend racing the sooner the decline will stop. -

Olympic Stadium Gp 2013?
mickthemuppet replied to philfromcov's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
So what's to stop there being two Grand Prix's in Britain. One in London and one in Cardiff. Although Cardiff only get half as many spectators than Wembley used to get in the seventies, the bottom line is Cardiff is far more profitable today, which is what counts. -

All Sporting people who do not follow speedway should watch this meeting. It was simply great. Has the ever been a world final where there has only been 11 points between the four teams. Poles were worthy winners -
