World Cup Final 14th July
mickthemuppet replied to racers and royals's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Pity poor Jason Crump was not smart enough to see what Nikki Pedersen was up to , then he could have made sure he did not pass him. -

The joker is a joke but it was great by Nikki Pederson to use it to his teams advantage. Well done to Denmark and I hope you win -

Quite right if you are having a world championship then it should be the best team wins off scratch. . No other sport has world championships with handicaps or jokers. speedway does not have it in GP's or when they had the worlds best pairs.

The Direction That Speedway Needs To Take In The U.k.
mickthemuppet replied to Bee's topic in 'The Way Ahead'
The answer is so very simple. You have to have , say in the Elite League or Premier League teams that will not be stuffed with guest riders . If you have teams that have a guest rider perhaps one night riding for team A then the next night riding for team B . How can the public take this seriously. The main problem is the promoters want to put on a successful meeting to earn money and the riders want to take part as they earn money for riding in these events. -
Grand Prix Crowds
mickthemuppet replied to mickthemuppet's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Rather a silly statement when I start off with " the last two GP's have been excellent " As the crowds at the GP's have been down this is just stating facts not a downer. -
Although the last two GP's have been excellent, it is a worrying feature this year that the crowds have been down. It looked like the smallest Parken crowd I have ever seen. The Swedish GP at Ullevi was the worst ever there. Let's face it Goteberg is not a Speedway city anymore with no speedway clubs there. It must be only a matter of time before they stop having GP's there. The Czech GP at Marketa was only half full. Even Leszno had big gaps in the crowds which is most unusual for a Polish GP. which used to be sellouts. What with the Olympics ,the cost of petrol , people not using their cars as much and the downward trends of attendances how much of this will affect Cardiff GP. Looks like these are quite worrying times and they will certainly not be expanding the rounds in GP's if this trend goes on. They are more like to contract.

The crowd was in the region of 8,000 to 9,000 Very Disappointing but perhaps most Swedes stayed in to watch the Eurovision Song Contest. -

Tonight after the Ullevi Grand Prix on Sky Sports there will be the Greyhound Derby Final. at Wimbledon. Tonight's Speedway Grand Prix winner will get in the region of £6,500 Tonight's Greyhound Derby Winner will get £125,000 Therehas got to be something wrong somewhere when you would have to win nearly 20 GP's to get the same amount of money as what one mutt gets in a greyhound Derby race final It will also be interesting to see how run down Wimbledon now is. -
Custom House was a very big track about 440 yards. Compare this to tonight's GP venue at Ullevi. ,the Hammers track was about 30 yards longer. They had a crowd of 57,000 for the restart of Speedway after WW2. for a challenge match against Wembley. in April 1946. There has also been reports that there were crowds there of 80,000.for some speedway matches. Besides Speedway ,Greyhound racing was also staged here. There was also the Thames Association football club which played in the Third Division South in 1930. It was not a success with one match only attracting 469 people. Must have looked quite empty in a stadium that could hold 120,000. After three seasons the football team resigned from the league and was dissolved

A Sad Anniversary For London Speedway
mickthemuppet replied to Parsloes 1928 nearly's topic in Years Gone By
I suggest you go back and read what I said again. This was the gate would be down at Cardiff because of the Olympics and people not using their cars as much. Then there is the cost of petrol. I very much hope I am wrong but I just think the crowd at Ullevi will be awful tomorrow so continuing the downward attendances at GP this season.mainly due to the recession -

The weather in Goteborg in 2008 and 2009 was very good. In 2008 there was a heatwave there over the weekend but landing at Stanstead it was cold and pouring with rain. -

Poland record is even worse than GB .for world individual world champions. One winner in the 70's and one in the 10's . So at that rate they should not have another winner until the 2050's -

A Few Facts on points scored at 4 Ullevi GP's Jarek Hampel has never won a race there in two GP's Nikki Pedersen is going backwards with places or 3rd,4th 8th and last year 12th Jason Crump has only one place but has won 4 Swedish GP at other tracks Chris Harris very consistant with placings of 14/12/14/13 Greg Hancock has one place only and 2 bottom 5 places Andreas Jonsson never out of top six except when he had a bad crash in 2008 when in contention Tomasz Gollob one place only but always in top ten Kenneth Bjerre .One win and two ordinary performances. Antonio Lindback has had two places in 3 GP's here Emil Sayfudtinov winner in 2009 on such fast machinery Hans Anderson. Just above Chris Harris class here Frederik Lindgren. Seems to be going backwards after top scoring here in 2008 when overwatered track on inside gates caught him out in final Chris Holder. Excellent record 5th and 1st in two GP's -

mickthemuppet replied to Parsloes 1928 nearly's topic in Years Gone By
With 9.5 millions seats available for the Olympics and 20 million applications already in that is going to take an awful lot of money out of the economy and with the Cardiff 13 days after the Olympics finish it is sure to affect the GP gate. As attendances are down nearly everwhere that will be another reason the gate will be down as well. Then there is the increase in petrol prices and people not using their car as much. a Interesting to see your reason for the an increase as you do not think their will be a reduction. -
A Sad Anniversary For London Speedway
mickthemuppet replied to Parsloes 1928 nearly's topic in Years Gone By
I think you can forget about London ever staging Speedway again. The Olympic stadium would be a complete non starter except for a Grand Prix. Can you imagine how much the rental would be and what the gate would be. You would probably get 10,000 for an opening night that would quickly slip back to perhaps a maximum of 2,500. or even less. Due to the cost of petrol we are using our car a lot less than we used to do. .With the ever more channels on TV channel, the internet or the ever growing cost of fuel all conspire to stop people going to Speedway. Now we have another big enemy to Speedway at the moment, ,the wet weather. Nearly all the promoters and riders are not earning any money. With no improvement in the weather still, how much longer can it be before a speedway club folds. Speedway has a very bleak future. How much money was lost on the NZ GP .It must have been a fortune. Last week European GP at Leszno was very noticable for the empty spaces in the crowd . So it looks like Speedway if losing it's popularity there. In Sweden you have Gothenberg with a population of nearly 500,000 and a terrific stadium at Ullevi who holds 38,000, yet they cannot make a profit with Speedway. It looks like the Cardiff GP will certainly have less punters there this year following the Olympics. Not a very good future unfortuneatly -
So why does the Piraterna v Dackarna start at 16.00. Is there a bank holiday on this day. Incidendently this match is live on Premier Sports tomorrow

Great GP and well done Chris-Last to First in the Final Did notice there were quite a few gaps in the crowd, so meeting was not a sell out.
