Most 2nd division riders back in the 80's when there were far more clubs had normal jobs outside if the sport. Your right i remenber Granty Sr worked in a garage, Steve McDermott worked at Massey Ferguson the majority of them had normal jobs. Riders had to use up holidays for away meetings. I can remember going on a southern tour and Berwick had about 4 meetings in a week.
TheWellBehavedWorrall
I miss the days when there was a sufficient amount of clubs to have northern and southern tours. Am I correct in thinking the northern tour for most southern clubs would involve Armadale on a Friday night, Shielfield on a Saturday night and Ashfield on a Sunday afternoon?

Only if Glasgow ran on an "off night". Would they be prepared to do that three times in a season?? Also, if they all did a Northern Tour, as suggested above, in one weekend, they would, obviously, only have 5 away League matches to race in the rest of the season!!

I was suggesting, I was asking.😂 In the early to mid 2000s - when these sort of tours happened - our home meetings took place on a Sunday afternoon. Busload of us Bandits fans went on a southern tour in 1987. Tuesday Milton Keynes v Berwick, Wednesday Wimbledon v Berwick, Thursday Arena Essex v Berwick, Friday Peterborough v Berwick, Saturday Canterbury v Berwick, Sunday Rye House v Berwick. Tragic thing is we are the only ones currently running.

Newport used to come up and race at Glasgow on a Thursday night , Edinburgh Friday and Berwick Saturday before usually having a home meeting in the Sunday. Great days. Normski
Been over this morning to the stadium for my dogs morning chase a ball, and a lot of the car park area has been fenced and roped off for the motor cycle rally. Had this been the Glasgow meeting this would have been a nightmare. Free Saturday last week and 2 more free Saturdays on the 24th & 31st surely could have been better planned.

Fromafar
Well done to Sam today hung in for good win, hope he has turned a corner now after a good meeting last night.think a bit dirt on the outside line at Berwick makes for good racing for the fans, but I’m hearing some riders don’t like it that way !! allthegearbutnaeidea
What a difference it was last night. Enjoyable meeting, dirt on the track, Hume and Hagon going much better, along with Woody and Smith looking good when they weren’t throwing points away. For all Cook wants his slick consistent surface, last night proved that a bit of dirt certainly doesn’t go amiss, and we shouldn’t cater to one rider. That track provided more passing, more entertainment, and the best team result we’ve had this season, end of.

Totally agree was standing just after second bend and before racing we were saying that the outside seemed to be well ripped up some very good racing

And scrub early league cup Edited May 20 by Catch Me If You Can

Fromafar
Very sad to hear the passing of Lacey Louden , with her husband Jim and Geoff Coulston they were instrumental in organising the memorable Berwick Supporters Bus in the original Shielfield Days in the 70’s/80’s,as well as stalwarts of the Club with all their work behind the scenes. RIP. Edited May 20 by Fromafar
