TNT no more?

BSN deserves some credence. Obviously it is all about income for the clubs but perhaps a reality check is needed without the easy money from a national broadcaster who apart from Sky have done no favours for speedway. Yes ITV or Chanel 4 or 5 would be a good choice but I doubt if that will happen. Maybe Tai’s story could sell it but not a lot else makes it an attractive for TV. Streaming seems to be the option to attract a younger audience who do not watch terrestrial TV

Tai’s story is being sold with SGP not British speedway next year 😉

The guys who are high 30’s in age must be breathing a sigh of relief that they don’t have to worry about the future of speedway! Speedway in Poland over the next few years will start to decline due to riders rinsing the clubs for money and it’s finally showing that clubs can’t sustain it. I heard one U24 rider wanted 1 million zloty to sign for stal, not naming anyone direct, but stal quickly said this shows the mindset of riders and what they think they can demand, and no the rider in question wasn’t someone worthy of 1 million zloty!

Equals cost of two bikes & maintenance for a season.  Although not a huge amount, good to see at least one promotion making it clear that riders need to earn their income on the track.

This is the sad part about Poland. If they actually worked together, they could basically halve rider's wages overnight and very little would change. The riders would still be earning several times more than anything in Sweden or GB, and the clubs would become far more sustainable. It might even be a good thing for the rest of world speedway. As it is, it seems it's only going one way long term, and the bubble will burst.

Jeez that's about 200k in sterling is it really that much now to pay for a couple of bikes and mechanics over the season ?

The best deal is the one that gets the sport to the largest number of non speedway fans.

But how to achieve this?

My opinion is that the sport is not suitable for live TV but ideal for a hour long, prepack, magazine type programme. You focus on the best races from a couple of meetings with additional races that are talking points from the previous week. In a 52 minute programme (plus 8 minutes of ad brakes which is the maximum allowed) as the spot ruling will not be applied to speedway due to viewing figures you should be able to cover this.  I would get BSN to prepare it and offer it prepacked to Channel 4 or 5.

Being on a FTA channel but as highlights will not impact on people attending a live meeting as much as the present deal does.  And you stand a chance of attracting new fans as its not behind a paywall.

The key is to get a broadcast (TV) partner as a streaming service only engages existing speedway fans.

They provide the platform through their coverage to give the sports they cover the publicity and opportunity to use this platform to increase their profile and, hopefully, their followers and attendees...

The UK promoters have had regular two hour adverts to showcase their sport yet seem quite content on showcasing it as something very few people attend, with swathes of empty seating and terracing being the overriding optics of most domestic meetings..

TNT (and Eurosport), were particularly poor though with their production standards, with graphics often wrong, however, trying to explain a "guest rising star" taking a "rider replacement ride"  to a production assistant to get the graphics right, must have some difficulties... :D

To be fair to TNT/Eurosport you can't blame them for the failure to explain a a "guest rising star" taking a "rider replacement ride" properly!

Well the premier league have got round it by now allowing all manner of middle eastern super rich rich and effectly state owned entities to control clubs, however the European superleague was all about the next step as they keep reaching for the sky in terms of more money and more more more.

What we really need in the PL is for a big team to get relegated and go bust that way the message about sustainability etc might finally get through.

As it is if you drop out of the premier league football generally at grassroots is thriving as a lot of fans have given up on the PL and Championship etc - more and more tourists fans fill premier league stadiums. I am also sure i read somewhere that the first league football match to be played outside of the leagues country is happening - it might be a Spannish or Italian league match. 

My local football team are Hallam FC in the Northern Premier East Division and the other day they had 1004 fans fo a saturday afternoopn game v Emley - they have certainly picked up disillusioned fans from Wednesday!

If there's no tv deal, will the league sponsors stay on board? I suspect Mr Morris may well be clearing his desk if either or both leave.

Spot on the sport never comes over well on live tv a lot of the time as you say a highlights package could work, the issue being though the whole promotion of every meeting needs lifting somehow , newbies turning up to falling down stadiums, 80's music blasting out of half the speakers that are working, toilets that should be condemned and a van selling average burgers for twice the normal rate won't have them queuing to come back.

That first sentence says one of the best solutions for UK speedway, and you're right re who to target.

Your next line is the great mystery of how to achieve this....not easy for sure.

All (or mostly)who come on this forum are already speedway fans - so we are clearly always 'preaching to the converted'..What else can we do to help the sport we love?

The weekly highlights programme could/should also have a list of next week's forthcoming meetings and which ones can be seen 'live' on BSN (Nothing wrong with a bit of cross-promotion).
