Oxford Spires 2026 ?

I doubt the sanity of any such venture. Why would the Oxford Cheetahs promoters risk diluting the interest in and attendances for Cheetahs matches, soon after ending a failed experiment. Unless they don't have any influence over it, which would still make it utter madness to attempt

The question is could the bspl find anyone stupid enough to pour their money down the drain to run Oxford in the top league after the struggle of last year simply to prop up their deluded premier league numbers ? If the answer is yes then the spires it is thenĀ

But if the remaining teams in the premiership, whoever the manic 4, 5 or 6 are , want the premiership to run, the BSPL or current clubs must subside an extra team, or ask to be allowed to drop down to an expanded championship, seeing as no team wants to step up. The clock is ticking even faster now, as AGM susposed to be on the 6th JanuaryĀ

It’s not directly up to the Oxford Cheetahs promotion. That’s run by Jamie Courtney whereas the Oxford Stadium lease is held by Kevin Boothby. If someone offers Boothby a hefty chunk of change for the right to run a Premiership team at Sandy Lane then there’s little Courtney can do about it.Ā

Yes, thats what i was getting at later in my post. Presumably the name Oxford Spires couldn't be used, though?

He could pull the plug on the Cheetahs if that also becomes unviable.Ā

There's maybe a couple of self imposed BSPL rules that could be broken.Ā

1. A club with no home riding at another track

2. Another promotion running within the 25(?) mile range of another promotion

Hypothetically of course the  BSPL could ignore those two rules in the interests of the sport 😮

Oxford cheetahs will do well themselves to get through the season looking at the mess boothby is currently inĀ

What's that then? All i'd read is that he's continuing with getting Mildenhall greyhounds open and handing over Towcester, whilst continuing with Oxford. Is there further news?Ā

Ā

Well he's lost Mildenhall, alot of staff have left Oxford due to unpaid work apparently.Ā

Ā

I'm hearing he's selling his race horses to get some money in. He's in a right mess financially by all accounts. But then he was last year and the clubs finished the season so let's hope for the same next seasonĀ

I'm beginning to think someone running the mythical sixth team out of Oxford is looking the most likely outcome, maybe under Swindon name possibly, The Oxford stadium owner gets some money in which helps his situation, the other five promoters have to pay in 10-15k each to cover part of the expected losses.

All they need now is to find a lamb to sacrafice that has 50-100k in its sheep coats ready for burning and its all systems go, the only other loser I can see would be Courtney given it seems speedway fatigue set in last season with fans not wanting to pony up to watch three teams.

Boothby obviously has (or once had) deep pockets and has put a lot of money into Oxford Stadium Ltd. One wonders how much longer he can keep subsidising operations at Cowley.Ā
