DaveWayne Posted yesterday at 09:53 PM Report Share Posted yesterday at 09:53 PM Just out of interest, how would the two of you suggest that they run a knockout cup with 6 teams ? Assume 2 would be seeded into the semis, so would that be the 2 finalists from last season ? As Northampton would be one of the quarter finalists, that would delay the whole competition as they are not going to be ready to ride at home until the end of the month. Yes, we can all be cynical about it, but I would say the format chosen for this year is probably the best option in the current circumstances. Col
Dan Bewley take a bow, he was tremendous.ย The rest of the Aces may as well have not shown up. Best racing I've seen at Owlerton for some time. Shame gate 3 is still a graveyard in the early heats.

Col
Kildemand very hit & miss, looked faster than C Holder in his first ride after passing Flint then was utterly anonymous in his next two rides, looked fast enough in his fourth but had to yield to Bewley's hunt down of C Holder, which was good. Cook was disappointing, won his last ride when the points were decided gave it a go at forcing his was past Etheridge on the run in to the line, but didn't manage it. Cairns score looked reasonable for an away RS but only beat Kileen twice, once in heat 2 when Kileen was off the graveyard gate 3 and in heat 4 when Bewley was on the graveyard gate 3 so Bewley kept Kileen at the back after getting past him. Thomson,ย Zischke & Harris were largely anonymous.ย I witnessed Harris score 19 points from 7 rides at Sheffield in 2021, 5 years on maybe its beyond him now. Bewley cut back scything between Pickering & J Holder in heat 13 was a joy to watch. Edited 20 hours ago by Col

ouch
The two losses at the top of the team cost us dearly and made this a none event before a wheel was turned. 28 points from The Aces on show would have required 4 from Norick & 10 from Brady to see us home but itโs all ifs and buts with the only given being our luck again. Iโm optimistic that our 1&2 (team numbers) will hit 14 between them per meeting this year and when you consider most fans feel the contribution of some team members tonight fell sort, it sees things generally looking good for the coming weeks.ย The racing was awful, I filled in my programme as they came past me on lap one for most of the heats I saw. I left after heat 11. If Leon hadnโt had an off night I wouldnโt have see an Ace pass all night. First away fixture for years and also my last.ย

All the Aces fans suddenly woke up and chanted "Bewley, Bewley, Bewley" when you finally got a heat advantage in heat 12. Pity the match was already over by then.ย

The Aces, on average, have lost by over 20 points a meeting when visiting Sheffleld, with the exception being the play off final... I don't think it really matters who is missing, or even if they are at full strength... The Aces just struggle at Sheffield... Looked a good night for Dan though, and after seeing him at the PCMT, and in a few Polish meetings on TV, so far, he seems to be a bit more aggressive in his riding, and gating a bit better too... He certainly has the talent to reach that GP top step, he just needs that forcefulness to do it... ย

They are also consistently good gaters and in modern speedway terms that equates to wins. Having not visited Sheffield for five years (shocking for a track less than 30 miles away) I was surprised by the small attendance compared to previous visits. At home you notice it less as you are visiting regularly so the small drops donโt register the same as revisiting after many years. A stark reminder of a dying sport.ย
