Premier League Pairs Somerset 03/07/15

Recommended Posts

It deflated the meeting all right. The joint was jumping right up to the moment the exclusion light came on.

But.....

It was, in all honesty the right and only call --- the alternative would have been to exclude the Edinburgh rider, but would have affected the meeting in exactly the same way.

So...

Can anybody suggest a different method of deciding the semis and the final which would prevent a recurrance?

I was referring mostly to sight of supporters (not just Somerset supporters) leaving in their droves before the final, all live on TV. That and the fact that Sky were left with a damp squib instead of a thrilling climax to what had been, up to then, a good hard fought meeting.

Such is sport. In football, you have grounds almost empty before the final whistle goes if the home team is taking a drubbing.

That's life. What would be wrong would be if the referee was influenced. If he feels a rider should be excluded, then that's his call.

All the best

Rob

You can't script sport. Everybody would every meeting to be a last heat decider, every game to be decided by a last minute winner, but sport isn't like that.

Seen a lot of football games spoilt by a sending off. The game goes on.

dont have semis and a final, always been opposed in all forms of speedway, straight points tally, imo

With two groups there has to be a final at least. The two semi's could be scrapped and the top team from each group faces each other over three heats perhaps, top scoring team from those heats takes the title.

Rye may actually qualify for this for a change. Eddie and NBJ could do quite well too.

It costs an arm and a leg so reducing heats is a non starter for me. Likewise nobody wants to meeting to drag on with nothing happening, so making riders do 3 on the trot at the end of the night is a bit of a non starter too. The system works perfectly well as it is, and allows also the even-ing out of potentially one group being stronger than the other.

The only way the system could be improved is by involving every team, but that isn't really possible.

Agree, I see no real issue with the format and having three on the trot would cause delays. It seems a way to remedy what happened in last year's final though. That said it wasn't a farce as some have said, it was speedway racing. Sometimes people get excluded.

Best of 3 heats

or maybe a mini league consisting of the top team in each group plus highest scoring team from below.

a one race final doesn't work well because of the scoring system.

What happens if one teams wins the first two finals? You have a pointless race left. The final is fine. If a rider crashes, well thats his own fault! The pairs is on of the few meetings where the format is fine, it works and doesn't need tinkering.

I agree format is final. Top Scorer winning bollocks is crap for the spectator. A team or rider (whatever the format) has a crap first ride or 2 and have no chance of winning they'll just give up, Were as when you have semi's and finals riders keep going to the very end as they never know they might sneak through.

Just hope they have extra beer and burger outlets, last year was an absolute farce, missing the racing having to queue for 20 minutes!

Hardly a great advert for such a big event, considering in previous years they have had a hogroast etc
