cheekycobra 159 Posted November 17, 2019 12 teams. would have been perfect to re-introduce the fours qualifiers. three groups of 4 with each winner to the final plus the best runner up. Missed a trick I think.

Its not a 'Newcastle out - Plymouth in' scenario. If Newcastle don't run then there will be an imbalance between the North and South, but thsigns for the Diamonds are looking much more positive. Plymouth's bid was declined due to financial uncertainties.

All I've heard is they're 'speaking with potential investors' which is about as generic of a comment as any team in Newcastle's position would make... Who knows what's actually going on? I hope you're right though

screm 8,057 Posted November 17, 2019 The Fours qualifiers were always a great crowd puller, certainly in the northern section, and of course they should return.

They certainly were, but for some reason southern fans just never took to it, and qualifiers cost southern clubs money. Remember you need to pay for 20 riders instead of 14 (4 x teams of 4 + 4 reserves), and teams are usually composed of the top riders (i.e. the most expensive). As you say the reason many of the promoters don't like the Fours qualifiers over 4 tracks is that as it has changed in recent seasons that you pay for your riders points home and away (not like it used to be when the home promoter paid all points). Therefore if you have a successful fours competition in this format you get income from one leg then have to pay your riders for 3 away meetings.

Ideally each round would have 3 sets of away fans attending, covering any rise in costs!

How many Kent fans would travel to Somerset, or Scunthorpe fans to Birmingham, on a Wednesday night for such a meeting? Even in the glory days of the 1980's, the southern tracks ran these meetings at a big loss. Nowadays, with far fewer travelling fans -- even at weekends -- the costs, especially for the southern and midland sectors, would be absolutely prohibitive. As sporting contests, such rounds would be entertaining, as business propositions (especially in the south and midlands) totally unviable.
