Today is the 60th anniversary of the most insane conversation I have ever had with a speedway rider! I was at the Rye House Select v. Poole match (22 August 1965) and spent some time in the pits talking to the one-and-only Tyburn Gallows. He was as mad as the proverbial box of frogs. I just wish I had written down the conversation at the time as I can’t remember the detail now, only that it was the most insane conversation ever! This, of course fitted in with Tyburn’s known personality. His real name was Raymond Humphries. He was said to have been an assistant hangman. At least he said he was! In his early riding days he wore a CND body colour. The Control Board banned him from using the name Tyburn Gallows and from wearing the CND emblem. For a while he used the name Tyburn Humphreys and then changed his name by deed-poll to Tyburn Gallows so the Control Board couldn't stop him using it. His death fitted in with his life as it occurred on the day of his mother’s funeral. He came home, sat in a chair and then just died for no discernible reason. Incidentally, in the match itself, he scored a paid reserves’ maximum, 5+1. Just wondering if anyone else ever spoke to him and what the conversation was like.

Highly unlikely Workington will have a team at championship level, so he will be available imo.

Obviously must be the way Ipswich want the riders. If Dan Thomson was last in heat 15 instead of Jason Edwards then he would be 6.00 and still at reserve. -

Did the Witches management miscalculate for Thompson last night?! According to the new Rolling Averages, which will be the Green Sheets for September, he is 0.04 above Ellis ... https://britishspeedway.co.uk/2025-rider-statistics/ -
That struck me too at the start of the season. But perhaps that would have been seen as so blatant that there would have been a risk of retaliation (for example by including play-off scores in GSA calculations)
-
3.81 average is a good average to build the team around, throw in Anders, Lawson, Zack (not sure) plus newcomers Bailey, Rushden and Taite Z would be a good base of a solid team.
-
And then we would have been accused of cheating, as per usual 🤔
-
Oh come on most people accept that Olly Allen is the brains of the Team GB Management, with Stead providing the face and ego.
-
If pilots had boxed clever regarding cairns, they could have used him as guest for 5 meetings, get other guest bookings wherever, then sign him full time on a 2.00 average for 2026, think a bit of an oops by pilots management 🤔

This is the result I expected in the KO cup match! Good to see Tom hitting form and better results of Dan, seems that despite the poor R/R score the rest of the team just did the jobs expected, curious on the crowd as it as good as last week? -
Cairns and Rowe already signed for next season, can't really see Lawson going anywhere else, not so sure about Zach
-
yes like Mercenary footballers 😆 Whilst to us and speedway in general these are big losses / donations etc its small fry - the reason so many football clubs are in financial trouble is the old school traditional English / or Scottish cairman is long gone as so many no longer have the fortunes required to keep up! As you suggest mercenary speedway riders have largely been the benefit as are mercenary footballers - but in some respects fans ourselves are part of the issue - certainly in football always wanting bigger teams and to play at a higher level, its all part of the circle!

Well with the final meeting to count towards averages on Wednesday for 2026, it gives us food for thought…. Cairns 3.81 Lawson 9.59 Rowe 7.38 Zach 7.34
-
My understanding is he was propping it up by £12k to £13k a meeting - these were his losses after gate receipts. Operating costs for Premiership home meetings begin with a 2 almost a 3 in some cases

As expected RR for Ellis is way below what he would usually score. They need him back for September. -

It certainly looks like it.They wouldn't get the extra 5% on his average for their home matches then, and would have to have a guest if he isn't fit.
