Lakeside 2017

All this doubling up is a shambles. It is the last thing Lakeside need in their first season at NL to be losing a rising star who people want to see because of a clash with a higher-league club.

so you are saying no doubling up so effectively locking the 'rising star' at one level not allowing them to progress in the sport. Although it can be a pain it is the only way riders will ever improve.

A13X200 is perfectly correct. In fact the doubling up system itself was introduced, as I understand it, to give rising stars the opportunity

to try their skills in the upper league. There were rules in force that said that they could only do it for a max' of 2 years. Sadly, that rule did not

last very long. I suspect that the promoters found it easier to get riders to double up rather than to uncover their "own" talent and that is

why we have such a system as we have today.

UK speedway is blighted by doubling up.

Riders came through the ranks in the past and there's no reason why it shouldn't happen in the future.

Much easier to the top clubs to snaffle riders from the NL for nothing.

Doubling up should have been used to sort out a short-term problem - now it is endemic.

I would ask what the Premiership clubs are doing to bring on riders (other than Belle Vue).

Agreed. In effective that scenario is exactly what happened with Greaves. The NL would break with uneven teams midseason if every time a heat leader moved up they couldn't continue.

In essence you are right , young riders should be allowed to progress, but Lakeside like most other clubs have had years, and years, and years of guests for all kinds of flimsy reasons some genuine, some not, and the fans are just about sick and tired of it.

To put it another way round, Zak and Alfie are two of the most exciting riders in the team., if they are missing the entertainment value is diminished, and more and more people will get fed up and walk. Its that simple. Its been going on far too long.

Sympathise with Lakeside over this but at the same time the whole idea of the NL should be to produce youngsters for the higher levels, this could be the opening that Bowtell needs to take his career on to the next level.

It should not be at the expense of the Lakeside supporters/club.

You also say that the whole idea of the NL is to produce youngsters for higher levels.

The higher levels decided in their wisdom that they would not pay any transfer/loan fees from NL, and denied NL clubs the right to have assets.

That decision rather changed the dynamics of the league. There is now no financial incentive for NL clubs: most are standalone businesses and the top clubs leeching off those at the bottom is rank unfairness.

What do you suggest is the alternative? Riders shouldn't be stopped from moving up but equally they shouldn't be forced out of the NL if they get a Championship spot. Look at Bowtell, he wouldn't cope with only Championship racing but without DU he wouldn't have been given a chance.

An even stronger case for moving this meeting is the fact that Max Clegg will be missing for Buxton as well.

I don't suggest any alternative other than a bit of common sense. If this was one example in isolation the fans woukd probably stand it but how long have fans been complaining about missing riders, guests and r/r and the promoters being deaf to their complaints?

As I said before, nothing against Zach and Alfie but the bottom line is fans pay their money and are entitled to s full squad, not a parched up side sad on after season. It's one of the things killing the sport.

In this initial season in the NL, Lakeside need their top riders to capture the imagination of the fans and build up the numbers on the terraces.

At Eastbourne, we were fortunate in unearthing some new stars in our first season- and they didn't miss meetings through d/u nonsense.

I have to say the prospect of no Alfie and his rides being taken by Laurence and the two reserves does not excite me at all.

Does anyone else recall the days where two teams would have a rider missing and rather than use guests or R/R they agreed to both promote a number 8 and give another youngster a chance?

We don't even see number 8's now when teams use R/R yet alone them getting promoted.
