steve roberts 9,247 Posted June 23, 2017 (edited) Lionel Van Pragg Bluey Wilkinson Jack Young Phil Crump Jason Crump ...and Billy Sanders very, very close behind! Obviously forgetting Vic Duggan who was almost unbeatable one year! Very similar to the American thread...pre & post war inclusions. Very difficult to compare if not impossible! So, despite the actual thread title, we should only list Australian stars that we have seen and ignore the legends like Vic Huxley, Bluey Wilkinson, Billy Lamont & Co. In that case, my top five - not in order - are: Lionel Van Praag, Vic Duggan, Aub Lawson, Graham Warren, Max Grosskreutz.

Obviously from what I've read about them they were great riders, but having never seen them how could I compare them to riders I have seen?

Obviously from what I've read about them they were great riders, but having never seen them how could I compare them to riders I have seen? As I said, I saw all the five riders I listed. I have seen other Australian stars in the years since then - but these riders had a charisma that tends to be lacking in those regarded as stars these days. But I agree Terry to rate riders you have never seen in action and just asess them on their quoted past results is difficult. But it can be done IMO as has been proved by, for example, respected speedway historians like John Chaplin and Norman Jacobs for example. May I add Terry that your own choice should have had its deserved recognition from me because you quantified the selection by mentioning it was based on riders that you had seen? Take another look at what the thread title specifies please. somewhat hypocritical don't you think? When I pointed out on the "best Americans in the BL" thread that TWK had named 3 out of 5 riders who had barely ridden BL and he suggested that was being pedantic you were happy to take that as am opportunity to have a dig at meyet here you are...
