I remember that well Steve. I think you ran either bare footed , or at least just with socks on!

I don't recall that I have to admit...I was a regular at Wood Lane.

More memories from the Abbey Finn Thomsen scoring 19 points for Wolves on a oversized engine…. Dennis Sigalos scoring a 15 point max for. Hull from reserve ( never met Kilb). .Einar Kylingstad scoring a 15 point max from reserve for Kings Lynn.   Ivan Mauger having a police escort him out of the stadium after fencing Kilb..  Briggo coming back with Hull scoring 11 points after being excluded under the 2 minute rule in heat 1.

I was there Sid for Dennis's and Einar's 15 pont maximums. Never a fan of Finn Thomsen (neither was Billy Sanders!) who I saw in one of his first meetings at Monmore Green in 1974.

GB v USA early 80s, the Brits winning and Bastable scoring a load of points. A lot of Brits supporting the Yanks..never understood that!

Mads Korneliussen trying to prevent a Peterborough win in the last heat..tried to fence their Polish rider who just smashed into him. Bits falling off Mads bike on every lap as he gradually lost power:D

Swindon at Reading 2007, half the fans were from Swindon, hundreds there.

Leigh Adams Farewell..when Leigh burst through from the back on second bend in final to win the meeting.

I attended most of the Test Matches against the Yanks at Swindon and, yes, I also never understood the attitude of the fans. When I asked one fan was told it's because the Yanks are more charismatic!

Michael Lee scoring 16 against the yanks in 1981, coming from the back regularly. Rolf Gramstad holding off Ivan Mauger for Swindon  against Hull.Egon Muller riding for Coatbridge in 1973 ( he was poor) Reading mullering us at home in 1984 Holloway/ Glanz from reserve doing the damage. That Reading meeting apart from the Mike Keen benefit meeting were the worse conditions i ever saw.The World team cup round at Reading and the 1983 BLRC Belle Vue rival those two meeting's also for horrendous conditions.

I remember the 2012 Grand final against Poole...waterlogged track, only went ahead because cameras were there.

I attended the Mike Keen Testimonial and Dag Lovaas was at his majestic best! Also the World Team Cup when Gordon Kennett rode like a hero when up against Kelly Moran...meeting should never have take place. Under normal conditions England would have breezed thru'!

It was because they supported the riders in their own teams, I think?

Racers were at Cradley that night, but it was rained-off and we diverted to Swindon on our way home only to find floods of biblical proportions at Blunsdon. Yet the meeting went ahead and Dag was a class apart.

Dag was awesome in that meeting was Dag like Jan Andersson used to riding on frozen lakes.? I always feel that Dag was like Scott Autrey retired to early he was a class act for Reading , Hackney and Oxford. The heat leader trio of Anders, Dag and the ever improving Geoff Curtis ( RIP) at Reading was very strong.

I used to cheer on Hans when riding as an individual but when he put his team Denmark jacket on it was England for me.

Vague memories of my first meeting back in 1973 against Belle Vue with both Collins and Morton.

Being a bit young, a friend and I died many times rolling down mostly bend 1 after being hit by shale.

Swindon were something like this..

Ashby, Hitch, Hunter, Keen, Stangeland, Handley and Leonard.

Brian Leanord had magnificent white leathers, but rarely scored a point from memory.

Phoned Martin Ashby as a 15 year old and he chatted with me for about half an hour, tried the same a fortnight or so later and he put the phone down on me, can’t blame him really.

I loved watching ‘Battling’ Geoff Bouchard, disappointing to see how he was treated.

Saw Jan Andersen when his first race from reserve .

Rolf Gramstad was one of my all time favourites and I met him near the Paperback Parade shop, long since gone, but opposite Swindon’s main library today.

Steen Mastrup was steady too..

We used to stand on the back straight, opposite the start line, it was more expensive to go the other side at the time.

They did lovely Cheese & Onions rolls in the back straight stand then.

Saw the tests against the USA and Russia too, I remember Kevin Pope scoring a fair few from reserve against the latter.

Thought the support for the USA was from their English clubs supporters, sadly..

Too many riders and good nights out to mention, it’s so sad to see it’s finally gone...

Back straight bogs excluded..

In the early 90's Wolverhampton was like the 51st state....:D

Monmore had USA flags everywhere, and their fans were often in attendance when England rode against the USA in the Midlands, cheering on their stateside brothers...

"Come un Sammoi, an Ronnoi, ya 'orrrll":D
