  4. not a newcastle fan but same goes for all fans regardless of which team suerly its more important to track down and get the right riders rather than just getting the team announced as quick as possible

  5. Because the whole average situation this year is farcical and the people who run the sport in the UK are unable to distinguish between their bumholes and their earholes?

  6. So the last few posts just completely ignoring the fact the racing had improved no end after the new shale/riders came and the 2nd half of the season was good racing. Sorry that doesn't fit the negative theme! . . . . at least the results were rubbish though

  10. Heathens Fans Forum. Concerned fans of The Cradley Heathens Speedway Team, are urging all supporters to attend a Fans Forum, to be held at The Netherton Conservative Club, 1 Halton Street, Netherton, Dudley, DY2 0PJ on 9th January. 7.30pm start time. The meeting has been arranged by supporters , to gather opinions and thoughts on the short and long term future of the club. Concerns have been raised again, following difficulties to obtain a permanent home in the area for the world famous team. The club have continued to track share at Monmore Green and Perry Barr over the last few seasons, but with uncertainty over available dates, they can only commit to a reduced race schedule The fans want to see how they can influence the situation and work together with all parties, to secure a long term future for the Heathens. Everyone is welcome to participate, air their views and ideas, which will in turn hopefully spark some much needed impetus and generate further appetite, for fans to get involved. The event has been warmly received by the Heathens Management, who are keen to listen to the fans ideas and work together to find a solution to the long running saga. It is hoped that the Heathens faithful turn out in force, to what could be another turning point in the history of the club. Organisers: Tracey Robinson-Rivers, Jacky Mcnaney, Jackie Mason, Grant Marks and Simon Priest.

  14. With young Bewley and Bickley in the side the Worky fans have alot to look forward to in the season ahead.Bewley he really has impressed me he has a real racing brain and i will be amazed if he does not put 1.5/2 points on his average this year.Bickley it will be tough but he is dedicated has good aquipment has a great team(dad) etc) and he will be fine for me the main thing for Kyle is to enjoy his racing the rest will follow.I hope this trend will follow now in the Championship young Brits getting a prolonged run at this level it was great last year to see the likes of Hume, Mountain, Bowtell, Wood really make progress as a supporter i really like to see young riders make it up the ladder.

  16. I would say that 5 minutes of standing around watching a tractor and listening to "Now that's what I call music volume one" has a more negative impact than any rules anyway.
    2 points
  17. BECAUSE there are far too many rules, many of which contradict one another. Rules should be about what you can do, not what you cannot.,

  18. Anybody know what John is up to. Usually a second stringer-but a trier-as I recall it-he rode for Stoke in a match in 1963-wasn't supposed to and then had his points rescinded. Stoke thereby lost the match and Wolverhampton got the title as a result.Anyone else recall this.

  21. Sadly we cannot live in the past. The days of exciting speedway are few and far between. The bikes are too fast and most riders don't like a grippy track.

  23. The problem is, if a rider touches the tapes but the race continues, and he team rides to a 5-1 with his partner, blocking every attempt for the opposing rider to pass, then get excluded after the race, he would had an influence on the race by team riding. Rather he was excluded, with riders having to go immediately around to the start, with no reserve replacement in the heat.

  27. I've always believed the surface was the biggest problem. if the surface was right then the corners are racable, with lines inside and out. Over the years we have seen some wonderful racing proving the shape is not that far off.

  28. Was once just a speedway stadium only.If my grey matter serves me correct.
    1 point
  29. Thing also to remember the stadiums main business is Stock Cars not speedway - it’s a stock car stadium that happen to run speedway as well , I’ve several stock car friends and they all say about Lynn what we used to say about speedway best track in the country .

  31. Dosent make sense not preparing a track for good racing, your business depends on it. Kings Lynn was always one of the very best race tracks in the country, hope its back to its best next season.

  32. I've already recounted the story of a former speedway promoter handing out the fivers to his stock car racers so won't bore the forum with a repeat. I had to get involved in stock car racing (banger racing is popular but often minor aspect of the sport, depending on location) in the early 80s and it was clear that crowds were quite superb for it, despite the lack of media coverage, and respect from the outside world. I'd go to speedway tracks and see them full for the car racing : Belle Vue, Coventry, Long Eaton for example. Even the smaller,. more remote locations like Aycliffe, Taunton, St Austell and Newton Abbot had crowds that would have been the envy of speeday promotions, even then. Speedway is torn apart by some for lack of credibility yet I lost count of the number of World Finals I would meet in oval car racing. It seemed every promoting group had its own World Championship for its various formulae, although at the higher levels BriSCA and Spedeworth managed to keep their world finals unique. Okay, so crowds were higher and costs lower, despite often 50-60 cars racing, many of which cost five figures to put on track. By contrast some other 'Banger' meetings featured cars dragged off the scrapheap, only to return after a few crashes. One other key difference from speedway was the lack of foreign racers. In fact in the cheaper formulae such as 'Stock Rods' or 'Saloon Stock Cars', outside championship events the drivers would all come from roughly a 40-50 mile radius. Even the 'World Finals' would often include just a handful of foreign racers, a few from the Dutch tracks and drivers from South Africa or Australasia imported for the event to drive loaned cars built to a different formula than their cars back home. As you can imagine the World Champions tended to be British..... So we have a sport with limited credibility, little international competition, almost zero media coverage, but with minimal costs attracting huge crowds. Why? I expect much of the crowd just wet to watch crashes and ignored the race order, nigh-on impossible to follow without lap charts and a commentator with access to them (I certainly didn't). The public didn't seem bothered by results. There was a following for 'names' on a national scale with both BriSCA stock car formulae and Spedeworth's Hot Rods having a troupe of travelling stars but I do suspect the attraction was simply action and entertainment. A society that drives far more cars than rides motorbikes is perhaps inevitably attracted more to four-wheeled racing. You could see though that this was a sport that simply got on with it outside the media spotlight, didn't waste a fortune attracting 'names; in from all over Europe, with competitors tracing for the fun of it, not the money, put the saved money into advertising, and one that stood no nonsense and just put on what the crowds enjoyed. There was one shining example of this. I went to Crewe just after the speedway had folded. Stock cars crashing on that track tended to stay crashed. The promoter had a way to deal with the mayhem after each of the several races. He had effectively a truck with a fork lift on the front with which he just picked the cars up and dumped them on the old cricket pitch and got on with the racing as soon as possible. It was astonishing to watch. No messing about and no taking the paying customers for granted by having a huge gap between races. Perhaps instead of sneering at Stock Car Racing or treating it as a destructive cuckoo in the nest speedway might find it useful to take a look at what it gets right. If they need to know when the next meeting is try the local paper which may well have a full page colour ad in it to inform them...... It made me realise that importing up to about a dozen riders from all over Europe and Australasia to race for big money in front of a crowd as small as a minor non league football club was insanity. It still is.

  34. When I last saw a rule book...and that's years ago now...much of it was filled with technical rulings aimed at the machinery and what was deemed legal or what wasn't. Forgot the number of meetings I was present at when protests went in about tyres, size of carbs, engines and silencers for example which held up proceedings or even resulted in results being altered after the event. Personally I was never interested in the machinery/technical side of the sport only the racing and arguments over a 'used' or 'new' edge on a tyre grew tiresome. Obviously with any motorised sport there has to be rules governing the machinery whether two or four wheeled but as bikes became more sophisticated I guess more potential loopholes needed to be closed.

  36. You have tens of thousands of holiday makers in Poole walking about that have never heard of the pirates. Sitting in a high st cafe watching footage of a meeting on a loop, with the cafe selling tickets for that weeks meeting makes it very enticing. A nice coffee and cake, some speedway merch and tickets for a meeting has more chance than a family turning up blind at the stadium on race night and buying merch from a metal container on the 4th bend.

  37. Actually, thousands, in fact tens of thousands enjoy 4 guys racing, it's called the Grand Prix. No arbitrary rules, points limits, "assessments", just pure racing. Unfortunately, for many reasons, league racing needs to have some element of restrictions in order to cater for clubs with a wide variance of incomes and support levels. My grip is that this is not done in a transparent way so that all fans feel their are competing on a level playing field.

  38. Really , then why won’t they ride for £10 pp in national league ? It is true , some people might not like it cause it’s a little to close for comfort but doesn’t make it not true ,.it has never been easier to get a national league place and once they are in they start demanding alsorts

  41. The Faringdon raceway was a dirt track, with a speedway track inside for training. The speedway track was maintained by parents and friends of the riders. Troy Smith, Martin Chessell and the Knappmans learnt there amongst others, Rosco had a few skids as well.

  43. Having gone to the recording Tai came across very well indeed, to the point I had many people come up to me and ask about Tai and speedway. (Had my Clifton racing hoodie, and tw108 hat on) all said how well he came across and that he seemed outspoken but not in an arogant way. Clare Balding who I have seen discuss speedway before, also seemed very knowledgeable and understood the politics. Tai had great chemistry with fellow guests tai kwondo star Bianca (forgot her surname) and Frank Lampard. And it was a thoroughly entertaining evening.

  45. "I dont actually ride in Britain because years of systemic balls ups have rendered the Sport over here a basket case which is on its arse, as well as that I also pride myself on a certain level of Professionalism that sadly those who run British Speedway cannot even dream of matching"... "Next question.." Joking apart, I am sure Tai will be the conssumate Pro if asked the question, a pity he cannot be in the vanguard of what the Sport is built around in this Country.....

My father was even worse....he used to get home and then type it all out and keep statistics of things....then gave those statistics out at the next meeting.....I chose to sit no where near him... I think it's because of him that I feel a certain way about speedway fans...I try not to be like them.

  47. I have known Noddy ever since 1969 when Ipswich re-opened on The Heath. Indeed he was an amazing character, often drove riders and promoters mad, but he was so engaging and enthusiastic that in fact he was so much part of the sport. I was in the party to Ukraine in 1990 and Neil MacFarlane would always relate an hilarious tale about Noddy. I will miss his smile, his regular requests for lifts, and indeed if I ever wanted the inside story of a team or rider, Noddy always knew. We have lost some great names from Ipswich..JB John Earrey, Joe Thurley, Billy, etc..etc....Noddy old son, you were so much part of the Foxhall set up.....RIP old son
