You should have stayed for a proper , competative meeting between two decent sides7 points

Heat 15, he went for a gap to overtake Jye Etheridge, there was contact, Jye came off, Cook was excluded. Nothing wrong with the move, it was hard, there was a gap, he went for it. The decision was right. There was bravado afterwards, finger pointing, threats, pantomime stuff. It all added to the atmosphere. The noise generated by both sets of fans in the second meeting was brilliant and this just ramped it up a bit. Glasgow meetings are always special, because they bring a load of fans. The more fans create a better atmosphere. There is a good bond between the two clubs as well. Cook is the rider Berwick fans love to hate, mainly because of his time as an Edinburgh rider and the fact he is so bloody good around the place. I reckon if you asked Berwick fans they would say that they love booing him but they also admire him because he is damn good to watch around Shielfield.7 points

It certainly looked the part... I remember the grass banks... As we always allude to on here.. That racing last night, played out in front of 1000 punters, would have been deemed devoid of atmosphere, not worth the admission, and unlikely to be revisited again. . Played out in front of 15000 passionate fans, sat and stood close together, and you get a memorable event which will no doubt see many return next year.. The NSS and Cardiff are the perfect example of this. One a great race track which delivers great racing but struggles to get more than 1500 there to generate real atmosphere, and one that delivers average racing but a huge crowd every year to sample the great atmosphere that their very attendance generates... Speedway in the UK really need to cop themselves on that getting a crowd in (however you do it) really does make all the difference to that virtuous circle needed for long term growth.. Great crowds deliver great atmosphere which then delivers an urge to sample it again.. Sadly the vicious circle of low crowds, no atmosphere, and no urge to keep sampling it, appears to be accepted as an inevitability by many..6 points

It's listening to what the riders want that has lead to most tracks becoming boring and processional.6 points

I am sure you had your reasons but I must admit I find it odd that anyone would leave after the first meeting of two. Anyway you missed a cracker.5 points

Having been a qualified accountant for over 40 years I find your offensive comment actually quite amusing as well as your elementary explanation of a profit and loss account. But hey ho, don't let your ignorance stand in the way of your rudeness or inability to provide any factual evidence other than speculative numbers!!4 points

Some comments from Redcar promoter re Eastbourne which I thought were worth sharing. Hear a lot about the negative stuff so worth highlighting the good. Duffill also had words of praise for Eastbourne after what has been an excellent two meetings: “It takes 2 teams to make a great meeting and I have a lot of respect for the Eastbourne team and their promotion who were excellent opposition and were nothing but gracious and complimentary in their defeat. We witnessed true sportsmanship this evening and I can’t thank them and their supporters enough for that.”4 points

Thirty pounds for coach, entrance, programme, great value a great gesture. It will be great to get loads of the Aces fans travelling down for the return leg on there last visit to the Abbey they brought a fair few.4 points

I know this was a dire GP but I'm so pleased to have been able to see it through the kindness of members who sent me a link. I am on a very low wage and cannot afford a BT Sport subscription but I'm dedicated to speedway and am very grateful to have been sent a link so I could see Zmarzlik move into... ahem... pole position tonight.4 points

That’s not correct. Insurance and referee fees increase for a double header, and medical costs and track curator wages may well increase. Two sets of tyres will be required. There is no assurance that the rent won’t attract a premium for a double-header. Bear in mind that for any ‘supplier’ to the Club except the riders, a double-header reduces their income opportunity (nine league events instead of ten) so they could well look to secure their income by charging more. Double-headers are never comfortable financially.3 points

Dont know what's happened to LCG lately but she's really not nice these days!3 points

Whoever thought the signing of MBA was a good idea to replace Sarj must be deluded. This signing has to go down as one of the worst signings i can remember in recent times , the injury to Starke and this signing has put as from a good team to a mediocre one at best.3 points

Likewise if we had Starke . But without the it's and buts , it was still a very good meeting3 points

Dont know what I have done to deserve that remark and no history as far as I know. We are even friends on Facebook. Strange but its perhaps because I used to be a Coventry fan and hate Poole.3 points

So if someone says go kill yourself that's okay, and if people say that comment is out of order that's bullying???? Seriously. As my man Dizzy would say, BONKERS3 points

I think having the meetings in the run up to the Play Offs is a good thing for Swindon, keeps them race fit as it were. A coach load of Swindon fans will be making the journey to the NSS after an agreement between the 2 clubs to lay on transport at presumably subsidised rates and fair play to both promotions for agreeing to this, many get a raw deal on here but that is some welcome planning and something I would like to see more of.3 points

Been thinking about posting to this thread for a while-saw the comment re Clive being a middle order rider and with respect I think this applies post 1965. In the Prov. League Clive was a consistent heat leader and a crowd puller- he was either top or second in the Sheffield averages from 61 thru 64. I don't think (request input from historians here) that he had an average below 9 points his entire time with Sheffield!!!. He was second in their averages in 1961 behind Guy Allott and then was either first or second in their averages(changing back and forth with Jack Kitchen) for the rest of the League's existence. Even in the first BL year he was their second heat leader to Jack, ahead of Billy Bales. I checked thru' my programs and discovered that I saw Clive ride in 6 meetings in 65-66. The first time was most memorable-9 July 1965. Clive knocked off Dick Bradley in Heat 6 of a BL clash at Somerton Park. That was Dick's last race-he was 40+ and decided to pack it in. No criticism of Clive meant he was just a tough rider. As an aside - Dick was the Wasps second highest average heat leader at that time and Newport were unable to get a replacement. Newport finished as the highest of the old PL tracks (OK OK I know that Halifax was composed of a large part of the Middlesbro' Bears old team) that year and I wonder if Dick had not been injured we could have ended on top even. We would have had a solid team with 4 heat leaders -Biggs, Bradley, Vandenberg, Golden!! Don't forget we lost only by 40-38 at Wimbledon Second time I saw Clive was at Poole July 28th for a British Semi-Final(that meeting is a story in itself-were any forumlanders there?). Very tough field , Clive got only 2 points , but did finish ahead of Colin Pratt when they met!! Saw him another three times in 1966 riding for CH but to me will always be a Sheffield Tiger(a team that always offered good entertainment). Don't want to downplay the importance of the PL here -in the combined year of 1965 a number of PL riders more than held their own- e.g. Dave Younghusband, Eric Boocock, Colin Pratt, Charlie Monk, Bill Andrew, Pete Kelly , Tommy Sweetman , Roy Trigg etc.etc. So , a tip of the hat to you Clive for providing so much enjoyment to myself and many others. R.I.P. indeed!!!!2 points

Congratulations to the Lions riders and management for finishing the regular season fixtures at the top of the pile. Whilst no silverware in the bag yet it has nevertheless been a great performance and such a turnaround v previous years. Looking forward to the playoffs and of course next weekends cup final n2 points

Are you completely devoid of any common sense.? Having worked behind the scenes at a number of tracks I have experience of how tracks finances work. You clearly have no understanding of incomings versus outgoings. If one meeting brings in , say £8,000 and the cost of that meeting including wages is £6,000 then you have a small profit. Do you understand this so far? Now run the same meeting with your income of £8,000 but double your wage bill and say that cost now comes to £10,000. Youve just lost £2,000. get it???2 points

After last night with a big crowd and great atmosphere does anybody think that IF all 3 teams run next year there could be a place for each club to run a double header against the other two for some sort of northern championship based on aggregate scores or 3 points for a win but not counting as league matches. It could be run with the old 13 heat format to save a bit of time and cost.Would maybe work if the fans would turn up for them and create an atmosphere like last night.2 points
-
We don't get ANY of the bar takings. What increased takings at the track shop ( a few extra cups of tea?). Would get more neutral fans wanting to pay £17 for a cup final, than say £30 for a double header including a meeting they have no interest in (in my opinion). It makes no sense whatsoever (again, in my opinion).2 points

The theatre on the centre green was all very WWE , great stuff wish it happened more often2 points

Can't believe any fan thinks a double header is a good idea. Same income , double wages. How does that make any sense to anybody??? Then add any possible injuries in the first match, or delays or any incidents whatsoever....No, running it as a double header is a ridiculous idea. We at Workington were forced into running them and look where we are now!2 points

Vojens only ever served up good racing when it peed down and all the dirt had been removed.. Meaning track craft got you the grip needed to pass.. Last night had too much grip for a track that has tight (ish) turns hence when they rode the wider arc at two thrds track, on that berm of dirt, it was like being on rails (or as much as you could be on a speedway bike)... One (very fast) line, then follow the leader to do the same.. Scott Nicholls made a telling point early in the piece when he mentioned how he thought racing would improve when riders started to feel safer riding closer to each other.. I often wonder how often that effects racing in the UK on some of our tracks..?2 points

Gee thanks. Where have I said I condone bullying? I was responding to Steve Shovlars post because the last time I checked this is a forum for opinions and that is mine. Starman is always dishing out insults so he should expect some back. If he gets so wound up by Gavan just sticking him on ignore would be the sensible thing to do.2 points

Same old nonsense. I could mention Barker third to first in heat 6, Gappmaier third to first in heat 8, Doolan passing Heeps in heat 9, Pickering passing Barker in heat 10, Etheridge third to first in heat 13 and Barker passing Heeps in heat 13 but I must have dreamt it. Take your frustration out on your own riders.2 points

the admission price is higher bringing more income did the 'number of tracks' were involved in all fold? only the points money increases - extra gate money though.- 1 rent, 1 programme doesn't seem all that complicated1 point

So the second lot of points money is more than the saved rent? What about increased revenues from Track Shop and Bar? What about the increased attendance from other fans who might be attracted by a Double Header (Workington/Berwick etc). Just wondering as it does seem to make sense to run this as a Double Header1 point

I agree. Wembley didn’t always produce the best racing on world final night, but the atmosphere was amazing.1 point

As Scunny have priority over Friday nights, we gave a Friday night up to come and race at your place.. Why should we have cancelled it?? Get over it and stop moaning about it1 point

I the Cook has taken over the mantel previously held by Ryan Fisher , IMO we could do with some more of the pantomime theatrics it gives the crowd a lift1 point

Where have I said it's okay? So stop with the dumbness. Starman is just wound up by Gavan and it's his way of telling him to get off the thread. But you all know that don't you? Again, why do you have a problem with it if Gavan has said he has laughed it off? Can't answer it can you! He doesn't need you to be offended for him! Anyway since you've started on me at least the gang bullying on Starman has stopped. You think your behaviour would be acceptable at a school. Nope. They would call it...oh yeah bullying.1 point

The plaudits of the previous posters say it all. Not many riders go through a whole career with barely a bad word said about them but everyone liked AJ. AJ - A massive talent, and thoroughly nice bloke. Leigh Lanham said his favourite times in the sport were riding No 2 at Lakeside with AJ at No1. Fantastic team rider . It was always amusing to see AJ coming off bend 2 and pointing to where he wanted Leigh to go, left or right, Leigh would go there and AJ would bring him home. One thing many people didn’t see was that he was meticulously organised and always treated his mechanics extremely well. All good things come to an end. Sorry to see AJ go but as has been said, he has taken a lot of knocks and I am glad to see him leave in one piece, and while he is still relatively near the top. He still rides at No1 in my dream team though.1 point
