  1. You didn’t have to love him to be able to show respect for the fact he’s died and the pain that will cause to his loved ones. You perhaps ought to show some respect yourself.

  4. Very sad news for the sport. A real enthusiast and ambassador. I thought he was an excellent commentator. In what is an incredibly difficult job, he was knowledgeable, engaging and with a tempo that often perfectly complimented the action. He also had an obvious chemistry with Kelvin Tatum that worked brilliantly. He should rightly be remembered as the voice of speedway, particularly in the GP era. Condolences to those closest to him.

  5. I am in total shock... Nigel was a good friend, and a lovely, lovely guy. Of course, he covered darts as well as speedway, but speedway was his main love. It's not often you are lucky enough to get a true fan as a great commentator, but we were very fortunate. R.I.P. mate...

  6. Shocking and very sad news. Speedway loses one of its best announcers and promoter of our sport. Huge commiserations to his loved ones.

  7. I know not everyone liked his shouting, but it was a big part of why I liked him. Speedway races are quick and loud, so it matched the sport and carried that energy across on TV. Watching anyone else commentating felt flat and I missed that atmosphere he created. I am not interested in darts or soccer, but I assume he had a different style with those sports to suit them. And though it did get a little annoying at times, his relationship with Kelvin worked really well too. They had built up a rapport over the years that they were a proper double act that brought the best, and worst, out of each other. He was not the first commentator I heard, nor the only one, but for me, and I expect a lot of people who only got into the sport in the past two decades, he was the voice of speedway. This year and more to come will not be the same. R.I.P. Nigel

  10. Should be a rule, where you have to put two riders in (assuming they're not injured). That being said, why would you need a rule "forcing" a club into trying their best to score points / entertain the public - they should already be doing that!

  12. Heard the dreadful news at Armadale this evening. Shocked and saddened indeed. Condolences to all his family and friends. Nigel did so much over the years to help promote British Speedway at every opportunity along with Kelvin in their TV broadcasts. Speedway in general owes him a debt of gratitude for the cheerful and enthusiastic way he managed to get all the positive messages across over many years. He will be greatly missed.

  14. What relevance does it have whether he’s been slagged for years by some or not though? The man has died today, nothing else matters.

  16. That was a chap called Stuart Bamforth in 1987, long before I had any involvement with speedway promotion. That was a dark time for the Aces for sure. I think Bamforth was really a stock car guy and he seemed to do well financially from the sale. From what I can make out, he was in his late 30s when he sold Hyde Road. He died in 2004 at the age of 55. He and I were born around the same year but our paths were very different.

  17. I’ve just spotted this. I will leave others to decide whether they categorise me as a spiv, a wide boy or both (!) but you are wide of the mark on the three names you quote. Rick Frost sold out of Peterborough but remained in the sport as the main sponsor of Poole. He has now sold out of ReadyPower but is still a welcome friend at Wimborne Road. Sandhu was only ever interested in what he could get for Brandon as development land. To my mind, the vandalism at the site pre-sale to Brandon Estates bears that out. I think Ged Rathbone only managed to make decent money at Peterborough when he received a substantial payment from Toruń so they could use Jack Holder even though he was committed to ride in England, and he was roundly condemned for doing so. I suspect it was that action rather than anything to do with BSPL which made him sell up.

  19. I stopped using this forum some time ago. I looked here with just disbelief that Nigel Pearson had died. Then I was reminded why I left. Some of you are disgusting. Nigel will be a massive loss, not only to his family but the Speedway community. He loved Speedway, he was one of the biggest advocates of our sport. A totally decent bloke. RIP Nigel

  30. Not a bad meeting. Bears heat leaders very good, second strings not so good. Special praise to Jason Edwards who rode (and battled) really well tonight. For the Brummies, Ellis was very good and most other riders chipped in. Pearson looks like a very good prospect considering his age and it being his first visit to the track.

  38. You've got absolutely nothing to apologise for. At the time it was a rumour and not one that was of knowledge to everyone. Sadly the rumour has been proved true and we've sadly lost one of the sports biggest supporters.

  40. As the Poole track creates quite a bit of interest on this forum, there is an article in today's Bournemouth Echo by Dan Rose about it, if anyone is interested? 'IT IS no secret Pirates will want to make Wimborne Road a fortress for their 2022 SGB Championship title defence – so they decided it was time for Terry. Experienced track man Terry Chrabaszcz, literally known as ‘Terry the Track’ revealed how he was asked to examine the circuit in Dorset last season. Pirates hosted an infamous meeting against Birmingham last August, during which a hole “about the size of a kitchen table” according to promoter Danny Ford appeared on the Wimborne Road surface. But with 40 years of experience at an array of tracks up and down the country, shale guru Chrabaszcz was asked to help out for the business end of the 2021 campaign. Having taken inspiration from Doc Bridgett, the man he learned his trade from, Chrabaszcz enjoyed his time at Poole so much, he came back to prepare the track this campaign. Asked how he started working at Pirates, the track specialist told the Daily Echo: “It was towards the end of last season, there were a few problems. The SCB initially sent me down and we sorted it. “I did the last few (meetings). The play-offs and the cup. “There was an opportunity to come back and I took it, because it’s such a good club. “I have been in the sport 40 years now. I’ve done Wolverhampton for years and it’s just nice to have a change of scenery and help a club out. “I help out at Wolves and I helped relay Birmingham this winter after all the problems they had there last year.” Asked how many tracks he would have worked on throughout his time in the sport, Chrabaszcz said: “I don’t know. Wolves, Coventry, Oxford, Redcar. I have helped out at Sheffield a bit – quite a few. “I live just outside Cannock but the other side. I leave at three o’clock in the morning to come here but it’s worth it. I love the sport. “It’s like 24 hours for me to come here – with the travelling back home – but it’s not a problem.” While the hours throughout the campaign are set to intensify for Chrabaszcz, it is the positive comments from Britain’s elite riders up and down the country which helps him to keep going. Asked what it was like to receive that feedback, the track man said: “It means a lot because you only get out what you put in. If you don’t put the work in, you are not going to get the result. “I am looking forward to it so much because I think Poole can, hopefully, do what they did last year. That is so good from a track man’s point of view, to be part of it.” Pirates are set to host the reborn Oxford Cheetahs in their Good Friday meeting tomorrow (7.30pm). And number one Steve Worrall, who was part of the Poole side last season, was full of praise for the work of Chrabaszcz. “You need to make your home track a bit of a fortress,” said the British star. “You need to create an advantage and when the new guy came in, that’s what we were able to do. “He was able to gain (us) a bit of an advantage from making a few things different. He was able to do it. He will come over and listen to what we want and get feedback from us. “I feel like once he came in, it flipped around a bit. I enjoyed the track so much more.”

  42. Personally I think it should have been neither of them in the side but i said before the season started I'd give then 4 to 6 meetings and see where they are at. You look at other teams and you see the crowds you get at Foxhall, they are quite consistent it baffles me if riders like Basso & Musielak are available to ride the UK why were they not on the shopping list Why dont they do an individual meeting or a challenge to give riders track time before the season? It just seems that despite a strong home attendance it's a low budget affair just to be amongst the numbers rather to mount a challenge If that was true then drop down to the championship but then that would ruin the top flight and with chris being a director that's a conflict right there I feel sorry for Chris really

  43. “We look very strong whichever way we set up. As I have always done, I will change the order around and experiment and that won’t change this year unless we find something that we settle on that we think is definitely the best set-up. That is something I think has worked well in the past and is something I believe we can do this year.” Witches boss Ritchie Hawkins won’t be afraid to tinker with his riding order as the Witches look to make a big improvement upon the 2021 season when they failed to make the play-offs. Sorry but I can't see what Hawkins sees, saying Witches "look strong" whichever way they set up! I understand a team manager has to be positive, but think he's seriously over estimated his side's ability!

  47. Sure you can debate the issue, Managers choose to manage in different ways, they set their teams up in different ways. Garry has often aimed for a 6 man team with a strong reserve at all times and almost a sacrificial reserve who has an opportunity to make a statement with no pressure on them. Most of his successful teams have been set up that way. Others do things differently, there's more than one way to skin a cat. Middlo for example has historically had little or no input into team selection at Poole. He managed what Matt gave him. What I will say though is Garry puts more thought into what happens in a meeting and making changes to effect an outcome, than pretty much anyone else I've worked with and that includes the other two managers you mentioned. Admittedly Garry is not big on "group hugs" and blowing sunshine up peoples backsides, some others are. But I would class him as one of, if not the, most successful Team Manager, in the last decade at 2nd division level. He's not everyone's cup of tea for sure, but everything he does has had a lot of thought gone into it. You can't please everyone and sometimes there are casualties along the way. But this is PROFESSIONAL sport. these people are getting paid. You can't just demand to enjoy your job every day and never have to do stuff you don't want to. If you have a set back, sometimes you learn more from that and others around you learn more from how you react. Do you bounce back or do you sulk? In the past I know the sacrificial reserves have had a good guarantee at meetings, so they know they will be paid at least a certain fee whatever points they score. If not, then maybe they need to learn about contracts and how to negotiate them. I get it, it's easy sometimes for kids and parents to get a bit starry eyed with a professional contract, but there's plenty of help and advice out there. But this is a business first and foremost, it has a job to do, and has someone in place to achieve that objective. If the goal is to keep everyone happy at all times, then maybe Garry isn't your man. But I'm guessing the same can be said of most successful managers. John Campbell at Edinburgh certainly isn't one for keeping it warm and fluffy and being friends with everyone, but in the last decade he's probably the main challenger to Garry as being the most successful TM in the 2nd tier.
