Iconic race jackets, trips to Wembley, Wimbledon & Belle Vue for major events. The lights being turned off in stands during races. The superstars - Briggs, Mauger, Moore, Olsen, Fundin etc. trip's up & down the motorways including stopping at services. going to multiple meetings on bank holidays , once in 1976 I think doing Reading v Hackney, White City v Hull & then Wimbledon for Internationale on Whit Monday. I used to get a badge & year bar from each track I went to if possible. The smell of the bikes warming up. Seeing teams visiting once a year or at most twice. Coming home covered in shale! I guess nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Inspired by another topic in general discussions. Have you any memories of those meetings? Mine... 1976 31st May 11am Reading v Hackney (KO Cup) 3pm ? White City v Hull (BL) 745pm Wimbledon: Internationale what great days

Hi all, Any memories of The New Classic partcurlarly at Newport, apart from freezing cold & damp. Brent Werner springs to mind for me for some reason and one year I got so cold I was off work for a few days! A Tim Stone triumph or folly?

The current world individual championship medal table reads for british riders tai woffinden 10th 3-1-1 freddie williams 13th 2-1-0 peter craven 14th 2-0-2 peter Collins 24th 1-1-0
-
Crikey can't believe there's any doubt if he wins his third world championship he will be. someone will be on here saying Toby rickardsson & Ivan mauger aren't the worlds best soon
-
Just to add fuel to fire maybe, there are three British riders who have won 2 world individual championships at the moment freddie williams peter craven tai woffinden if tai collects his third he will be britains best ever judged by the only thing that really matters IMO just as Ivan Mauger is new zealands tony rickardsson is swedens and so on

I'm not saying it was a perfect track, but it was my home track for 13 years and still managed to produce some good racing , battles between the likes of Briggs & Nordin, Crump & Collins, Eide & Olsen. Etc.

Sad news, was very lucky to see him several times in his late sixties comeback mostly at plough lane due to relatives living in London. Became a real favourite of mine. A true legend. such a pleasure to watch, appeared to be a inspiration for his team. Condolences to his family

The continuing decline of Speedway
longlivefrankie replied to wealdstone's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Re music at meetings, not sure age of music has a lot to do with it, IMO it's actual use is more important, I ogo often to T20 blast matches (cricket) and Neil diamond - Caroline Jeff beck - hi ho silver lining Beatles - hey Jude are trotted out to great effect. The size of the crowd is a factor I was at the oval recently following Glamorgan and the atmosphere was electric the music certainly helped get the crowd going. On the opposite side I have been when places less than half full thecmusic doesn't work. Usually the MC/DJ tones down the music to a lot less. What i do come away usually with the sense of being entertained -
The golden era of the test matCh in this country was the sixtiesinto the early seventies IMO , there was 20,000 allegedly at Somerton park Newport for a Great Britain v ussr tEst match in 1965 , as others have said 6 riders in the main team with 2 reserves (usually local stars for GB) of course GB included likes of kiwis -Briggs, mauger, Moore & Aussies airey, Middleton scots McKinley In early days . Great at to see a test match back on calender . Maybe more appetite now especially as international stars rarely seen on uk tracks these days . Bring on Sweden, Poland , Russia
