Always makes me laugh Denis Law's total dislike of England despite giving him the opportunity of making it in football as I think I'm right in saying in his entire career he never played for a Scottish club side? He always states that beating England (despite England playing with what was in effect a 10 man team for a good proportion of the game) in 1967 made Scotland the unofficial World Champions. I've read his fascinating autobiography and despite his prejudices he was certainly a star player in his time.
Slightly off tangent but whilst on the NYMR last week I spoke to a passenger who was from Hoddesdon and was very aware of Rye House and the present situation and on discussion found out that his great Uncle is Clive Hitch (who is still with us) and son Martin who both rode speedway...I remember watching Clive when riding for the "Robins".
It was/is a perculiar one "on ice". I know that Reading's was put "on ice" during the development of Smallmead and I believe the same applied to King's Lynn when "Buster" Chapman (remember him as a novice riding for Oxford!) was negotiating the purchase of Saddlebow Road? Oxford purchased Hackney's licence when they re-entered the British League in 1984...would be interested to learn the situation regarding Swindon's licence and who actually owns it?
