What will 2026 UK speedway bring?
Phannan replied to Lionsman66's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Promotion and relegation? Please make it happen. There’s plenty on here who say it wouldn’t work. If Peter Oakes suggests it then that’s good enough for me. -

British Speedway is worth peanuts tbh. The way it’s run with clubs dictating to the sport is laughable. -

You miss my point. Hopefully by being successful at the highest level you can attract more people through the gate . More sales of merchandise etc. if clubs showed more ambition and operated at the highest level possible, then that league would become more viable, the racing would undoubtedly be better, more teams with better riders. Meaningful success. Improve the sport as a product. Hopefully more attractive for the tv and the ££ that would bring. Clubs dictating to the sport is all wrong. In my opinion. -

Totally agree. The thing that strikes me about speedway is the lack of ambition to be successful at the top level . Certain clubs with decent fan bases are happier to pick and choose where and when they want to operate. Dosent matter what the level of opposition is. Then when they achieve success they celebrate it like they’ve won the World Cup. Big deal. They’re hollow victories. Race at the highest level against far better opposition. Track a winning team if at all possible. That will attract more people through the gate as people love to follow winners. Look at Man City for an example. Then victories are meaningful. Ambition? No . Let’s just be a big player in a lesser league. It’s sad how far our sport has plunged with that attitude. -

I wouldn’t no. Not until it had a total shake up from the bottom . None of this them and us rubbish regarding both the leagues. It’s all the same sport isn’t it . The two leagues should be intertwined. Meaning promotion and relegation. None of this I’m only racing in that league and on that night crap. I know riders race in different countries on different nights. Surely there’s a way to get around that. More complicated issues than that in life have been overcome. The current model doesn’t work, causes divisions. It’s only going one way. There has to be jeopardy to the sport to make it more attractive and entertaining. No doubt I’m living in cuckoo land wanting this though. -

I think you’ll agree the current set up is all wrong and needs changing That’s why it’s in the state it’s in. The fact that everything has to be to the clubs own personal liking, what league they race in etc makes the sports professional status laughable. Where’s the ambition in this sport? Just surviving each year ? 5 teams in 1 division, 9 or 10 in the other ? Another year of same old same old ahead with promoters doing what’s best for them, never mind the sport’s future. They’re on borrowed time with that I’m alright jack attitude. -

Fair point but again, it’s the clubs that are dictating the terms and not the sport itself. It’s a total mess . -

I find it unbelievable that a professional sport isn’t ran in a professional manner with promotion and relegation etc. Every meeting will then more or less have something riding on it . That’s got to provide better racing. Which may attract bigger crowds. None of these going through the motions meetings. And none of these so called top level clubs and we know who they are , dictating to the sport, when where and what level they’re only prepared to race at . I keep seeing people saying that no rider is bigger than the sport. Well I reckon certain clubs definitely think they are , dictating the terms. It’s a joke. And any sport allowing this certainly looks like one from outsiders as well as those that have an interest in it. -
January 6th. That’s very decisive of them to set the date. Why did we ever doubt them 🙄

It really does feel like doomsday what with the threat of a joke of a 5 team league. Imagine being second last then winning the playoffs to be crowned champions. Unbelievable, except in our beloved sport. Forget speedway everyone. Take up Padel . It’s the future… apparently. -
Wouldn’t that be good. Imagine the clubhouse after every home meeting with woffy on the decks banging the tunes and the f bombs out 😁

Top man Chris Louis. Used to love watching his dad take on my beloved Bradford in the 70s and then support him for Halifax alongside Kenny and Doug etc

Promotion and relegation. That’s the answer imo. That way nobody gets to choose what league they want to operate in . The premiership and the championship should be embroiled together in that way. Yet it feels like a them and us narrative now. One league’s supporters looking down at the other. It would stop the big fish in a small pond problem too. But I suppose football, cricket, rugby etc have always done it wrong whereas the brilliantly run speedway has the answers. -
Him ? Or me ? Or both ?

Suppose that depends on who your 1 to 7 is really. As well as injuries etc. Hopefully one day you’ll work out that you can’t predict results more than 6 months in advance.

A 5 team league? Will the fans of the team who tops the other 4 seriously celebrate it as a wonderful achievement? It’s embarrassing if you think about it. What a shame its sank to this. -

What happens if Sheffield don’t run ? No league meetings. Just straight to the play offs ? Maybe the 4 remaining clubs in the prem should do a Poole and insist on only running in the championship. One big league. Yippee. What a shambles our sport has become.
-
Great post. That’s it in a nutshell. There has to be motivation to reach higher levels in any sport as well as life in general. This choosing what league they will race in makes a shambles of the sport and goes against everything that sport should represent.

The Polish league have got it right. Promotion and relegation from all 3 divisions. Ambition shown by all teams year in year out. None of this deciding what league they will only race in bollox.. The only team sport in this country that puts up with that crap . It’s only a matter of time before it all goes to the wall . On the plus side United beat the scousers 👍 -

Kenny Carter used to ride Cradley well didn’t he. Bet he got plenty of stick there too because of his clashes with Bruce .
