What will 2026 UK speedway bring?
Phannan replied to Lionsman66's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
If Glasgow and Poole were in the premiership then that would go a long way to making it more of a prestigious league. One that if they came out on top of, their ambitions would be possibly met. But I’m talking sporting ambitions, not just business ones with local derbies etc. I understand that businesses have to be profitable and sustainable, but therein lies the problem. Everyone is out to look after themselves and not look at the bigger picture of saving our sport. That’s why it’s going down the pan rapidly. And Glasgows business plan will amount to nothing. -

I can’t honestly say I have any faith in that lot improving anything in any amount of time really. -

So a 5 team league for 2026 it is then. All the debating, second guessing , presuming, forecasting etc about what will happen has in fact resulted in absolutely nothing. If anything it’s gone backwards. A championship where only two ambitionless ( if that’s a word) teams can win it with the rest just making up the numbers. And a so called top league where even two less teams than last year can succeed and you can finish second bottom and be crowned champions??? A thrilling season with record attendances awaits.. in the promotors dreams -
Can’t beat seeing the true facts spoken instead of the rubbish just to suit people’s agendas.

Let’s hope this 5 team league provides more fun and excitement than what Mo Salah is getting right now, going by his face like a smacked ar5e look today -

If the premiership should be the target for all clubs , the pinnacle as you say, how do you achieve that without a route to it if it’s to be a credible sport? Promotion and relegation could be an answer. Jeopardy, credibility, meanfull meetings would then apply . A total fresh start would be the answer in my opinion. -

There in lies the problem. It might not be what everyone wants. So if you don’t want it , please come along and pay your dough anyway. That’s the attitude that’s ruined our once great sport. His surname is very apt. -
Agreed . That’s why it’s ridiculous to say he’d only ride for 1 club . He’d ride where he’d get the most dough. Rightly.
-
How does it go ? If you cut him open he’d bleed black white yellow and blue etc. They’re all mercenaries at the end of the day . There’s no loyalty in professional sport.

Philip Davies the Tory mp from Shipley Yorkshire? He’s promised plenty around that neck of the woods. Still a rubbishhole. Billy bullrubbishter. I have my doubts he can lead us back to the heady days 😁 -

The Doyle news being another nail in the coffin of this once great sport. From the early days and that magical smell to summer USA test matches at Hyde Road etc . Televised coverage to the point where everyone knew about speedway. It’s been destroyed by those in privileged positions with no regard to the future. But then it’s a different world now. All we of a certain age can do now is reminisce. Today’s generation don’t even have this sport in their mindset. It was always going to reach a conclusion one day. That day has almost definitely come. -

Heckmondwike could be an option for a new club in the premier league. But there’s just 3 concerns with it . It’s a 90 metre track . Their average crowd is nowhere near as big as Ipswich and worst of all , they’re only prepared to compete in the championship. Cycle speedway… it’s the future -

5 team league. 6 , 4 or 3. It’s all the same really. A shambles that can’t be taken seriously. -

A 5 team prestigious tinpot league? Wow what an achievement to celebrate being the champions of that. So any differing opinions on this forum about it will be like that league, totally pointless. Better off finding something else more meaningful to disagree about. -
I understand why too. What I don’t understand is what is it that makes it an attractive buy to a potential new investor. The sport needs a total shake up from the bottom. Two even numbered leagues with tiered prize money depending on where you finish up at the end . That way there is meaning to every meeting. I would also introduce one up and one down at the season’s end. But I’m living in a dream world.
-
Hopefully one of these two interested parties will come through. It’s totally beyond me though why any successful person would see an investment in the sport as worthwhile and profitable. It’s dying a slow death and there’s so many reasons why that have been aired over and over again on these forums. Non descript non jeopardy speedway with nil ambition shown in certain areas being the worst in my opinion.
-
Promotion and relegation provides jeopardy and consequence . Apparently though it dosent work. The way it’s run now however …..
-
His last sentence springs to mind.
-
Very well said. There’s no need to get personal and single out certain clubs and fans just because their opinions don’t always match your own.

Lily Savage is in the room … talking the usual bollox

I don’t think there’s much more prestige to winning a 6 team league to be honest. And there definitely can’t be any in winning the championship when there’s only 2 possible winners from the outset.
