  1. I reckon it'll come down to Scunny vs Plymouth on September 11th. All Ippo fans need to come along and cheer on the Scorps. All the best Rob
  2. A partial roof (it's been reconfigured since the Olympics). Wouldn't cover the track down the straights, but decent covers would do the job. In any case, having a roof didn't help Gelsenkirchen in 2008, Warsaw in 2015, and very nearly Cardiff in 2013. It's surely easier to prepare a decent track in an open stadium. There's been more problems with GPs in roofed stadiums than open stadiums, where moisture is a major problem which has never been completely fixed. The Cardiff track in 2015 still left much to be desired. Cardiff is a good day out, but the actual meeting itself is often poor. All the best Rob
  3. And that's why the Olympic Stadium would work... it would retain the 'party' atmosphere of Cardiff, while it would have the prestige and national media coverage of having a Speedway Grand Prix in London. All the best Rob
  4. Forget Wembley. Go for the Olympic Stadium. Bars, restaurants and hotels all within a few hundred yards. A permanent running track on which a speedway track could be laid. Brilliant public transport (I went to the Anniversary Games a few weeks ago, and it's amazing how quick and easy it is to get back onto the Central Line). 50,000 fans inside THAT stadium would make the national press sit up and take notice. All the best Rob
  5. I have no idea when the Scunny & Redcar promotions are going to restage it, but it might well work as the final meeting of the season for both clubs, with the destiny of the wooden spoon resting on the result of the meeting. It would give the meeting a bit of extra spice, for sure. All the best Rob
  6. One-eyed BWitcher taking about bias - you couldn't make it up. All the best Rob
  7. David Nix of the King's Lynn Kids was killed at the Norfolk Arena on May 1, 2002. I think he's the latest fatality at a British speedway track... and long may it stay that way. All the best Rob
  8. Now confirmed as Rasmus Jensen. All the best Rob
  9. Run-off for 1957 World title, although Briggo didn't fall in the incident, just Fundin. Fundin led from tapes, Briggo bustled past, Fundin came down after contact, race continued and Briggo became champion for the first time. All the best Rob
  10. I admit Greg 'The Hitman' Hancock does need a little further training on how to follow through after the initial move, but hey, no-one's perfect. All the best Rob
  11. Nicki needs to man up and go for the wrestling moves such as Greg's mega-clothesline, instead of some silly little kick. All the best Rob
  12. Smart ass In any case, I drive closer to 18,000 miles a year, so your sums are well out All the best Rob
  13. Wicked clothesline from Greg. Needs to bring out the WWE ladder next time, and dive on Nicki from that. All the best Rob
  14. Fuel costing 40p per mile? Are you putting rocket fuel in your motor SCB? Costs me around £50 in fuel to get up to Scunny and back. All the best Rob
  15. CRUNCH CLASH FOR SCORPIONS FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance, can climb off the bottom of the Premier League table, if they defeat Redcar Bears by seven points or more in the crunch clash at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening (7.30pm). The Scorpions will be looking to build on last week’s morale-boasting 54-38 win over the Newcastle Diamonds. A victory for the Scorpions, while denying the Bears the bonus point for losing by six or less away from home, would take the Scorpions above the Bears on race points difference, and leave everything to play for in the final few weeks of the season for the two clubs. 17-year-old Dane Andreas Lyager - the replacement for the injured Ben Wilson - is set to make his first appearance for Scunthorpe, just one week after 19-year-old Czech Zdenek Holub - the replacement for the injured Josh Auty - scored paid 10 on his home debut for the club. Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “This is a big fixture for us, simply because we don’t want to finish bottom of the league, no matter how much bad luck gets thrown our way this season. “Since speedway returned to Scunthorpe in 2005, we’ve never finished bottom, and we don’t want to start now. “Similarly, Redcar will also be hell-bent on avoiding last place in the PL. I think it’s going to be a fascinating clash, and I’m sure every point will be fought over.” Regarding the new make-up of his team, Godfrey commented: “I guess we may look slightly vulnerable with two new riders on assessed averages in our top five, especially now we have to use rider replacement for the sadly injured Ryan Douglas. “But Zdenek Holub had a terrific home debut last week against Newcastle, while having Alex Davies move down to reserve, alongside Nike Lunna, could be a real trump card. “Alex had himself been in the wars earlier in the season, but last week he scored a superb 13 at Sheffield and followed that up with 9 at Scunthorpe. “He seems to be moving back into form just as he drops to reserve, and we could reap the benefit of that.” Godfrey also insists no pressure will be placed on the incoming Lyager. “Andreas is only 17 and hasn’t ridden in Britain before. “We’ll treat any points he scores as a bonus. If he does go out there and score a hatful, then fantastic, but we won’t be placing any pressure on the lad.” A reminder of the special promotion, which will last to the end of the 2015 season, which sees all accompanied children under the age of 16 admitted for free to home Scorpions' meetings. Admission prices for Friday: Adult: £15.00 Student/OAP: £13.00 Child (16 – 17): £5.00 Child (0 – 15) Free (accompanied by paying adult) Family Ticket £35 (2 adults, 2 Children 16-17) Match Programme: £1.00 Expected teams for Friday: FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance: 1. Zdenek Holub, 2. Theo Pijper, 3. Andreas Lyager, 4. Carl Wilkinson, 5. Rider replacement for Ryan Douglas, 6. Alex Davies, 7. Nike Lunna. Redcar Bears: 1. Aaron Summers (guest for Lasse Bjerre), 2. 16. Bottom of the table clash. A win for the Scorpions by seven points or more will take them off the bottom of the table. Andreas Lyager makes his debut for the Scorpions. I reckon it will be close, but Scorpions' strength at reserve will prevail. Should be a night of some cracking racing. All the best Rob
  17. As expected, an Edinburgh win. Cracking Heat 13, but otherwise not the best-ever meeting around Somerset. All the best Rob
  18. Should be a great meeting. Can see Edinburgh just snatching it, although Somerset might upset the form book and beat the Monarchs. All the best Rob
  19. Scunthorpe track is one of the widest in the country and has multiple racing lines, and is prepared so the inside and outside lines are both an option. There are several ways to take the second bend, e.g. Theo Pijper takes a resonably tight line. For those taking the tighter line, it leaves the option of moving inside on the third turn. It was Rohan Tungate's choice to go from gate 1 to chase the dirt around the outside on the second bend. You don't have to take it that way. All the best Rob
  20. I wouldn't be surprised if it was your No 1's favourite track - he seems to love Scunny and it's a track that gives him an opportunity to come from behind. All the best Rob
  21. SCUNTHORPE’s Eddie Wright Raceway provides the best racing in the country. Who says so? The longest-travelled supporter for the home fixtures of the FluidAir Power Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance. Brian Schofield travels from Llandudno in Wales to the North Lincolnshire track for the majority of the fixtures at the EWR. He says: “The distance I travel to each Scunthorpe meeting is 360 miles there-and-back. It takes around three to three-and-a-half hours to get there, including picking up my friends in Bury. “I always liked the track at Scunthorpe and decided to make it my second track. Belle Vue is my No 1 track and has been for 53 years. “I consider Scunthorpe to be the best racing track in the country. Peterborough and Somerset also come high up in my estimation, but not quite as good as Scunthorpe. As a consequence, I am prepared to travel to Scunthorpe every week provided the forecast is good enough.” Brian has the statistics to back up his claims. As a real speedway enthusiast, he has travelled 142 meetings so far in 2014 and 2015, and for 134 of those meetings, he has statistics on the number of good races and number of passes after the first half lap. 119 of those meetings have been team meetings (the rest being individual meetings, pairs, fours, etc). The averages number of passes from the team meetings has been 15.57 per meeting. For the 22 first team Scunthorpe Scorpions fixtures he has attended in 2014 and 2015, the number of passes is well above average – at 20.41 passes per meeting. And of the 119 team meetings, the top five with the most passes (after the first half lap) are as follows: 1. May 15, 2015: Scunthorpe v Rye House (36-54). 11 good races; 39 passes. 2. July 17, 2015: Scunthorpe v Ipswich (43-47). 13 good races; 35 passes. 3. June 22, 2014: Torun v Czestochowa (56-34). 12 good races: 34 passes. 4= August 31, 2014: Scunthorpe v Workington (53-37). 10 good races; 32 passes. 4= August 26, 2014: Peterborough v Plymouth (51-31). 8 good races; 32 passes. Three entries for Scunthorpe in the top five, with Peterborough the only other British track to appear. So there you go. Scunthorpe Speedway statistically proven as the best racing track in the UK. What are you waiting for? Make your way to the track in Normanby Road before the end of the season, to experience the thrills of a meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway!
  22. Cheers, but I spent most of last year experimenting with all the possible routes, and I think I've now found the optimum to avoid congestion on a Friday night. The biggest problem is getting out of Oxfordshire!! I don't touch the M40, and similarly avoid the A34 (the A34-M40 junction can be hell at around 3.30pm on a Friday afternoon). And with the Cuttleslowe roundabout roadworks on the A40, I now bypass that as well. Forunately, not many people seem to know about the Islip alternative route... I know about the B road that runs parallel to the A15, and used that one time when the A15 was shut due to an accident. The A15 is fine though - and much quicker than going through Gainsbrough or up the A1 (M). The B road route is the second best to the A15. All the best Rob
