SPEEDWAY FOR A FIVER, AS YOUNGSTERS TAKE SPOTLIGHT THE VERY BEST young riders in Great Britain descend on Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday (start-time 3pm), for the opening round of the Mitas British Youth Championship. It’s a bumper day of action, with no fewer than 51 riders, all aged 16 or below, due to compete in 55 races – the largest-ever entry for a round of the championship. And the meeting is very good value for money, with an admission price of £5 for all adults, while all accompanied children will be admitted free. There are a host of riders from the amateur meetings held at Scunthorpe on display. Scunthorpe’s Youth Co-ordinator Richard Hollingsworth said: “As always, we’re massively proud to stage a round of the British Youth Championship. Quite a few faces will be familiar to those who attend our amateur meetings here at the Eddie Wright Raceway. “There are over fifty riders competing in total on Sunday, and I don’t think that figure has been achieved before for a round of the championship. On the other hand, it could be pointed out that Doolan was an excellent guest and in scoring 8+2 before Heat 15, he was only beaten once in his four programmed rides, so Sedgmen couldn't have done much better. And Cook only missed one programmed ride - Heat 13. Meanwhile, Alex Davies lost points through a fall, and David Howe and Ryan Douglas were not missing for one ride like Cook, they were missing for all four rides apiece. With both teams at full strength, it might have been closer or it might have been a bigger Monarchs win. We'll never know. And I reckon it's going to be a cracker between the two sides on Monday. SCORPIONS’ LEGEND WAYNE CARTER BACK IN ACTION SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS’ former captain and club legend Wayne Carter will ride for the Halifax Dukes in the Scunthorpe vs Halifax National League challenge match that forms the second half of next week’s mouth-watering Bank Holiday Monday double-header at the Eddie Wright Raceway. The start-time of the preceding Scunthorpe v Edinburgh Premier League meeting is 3pm, with Stags v Dukes to follow. Carter, now 44, was a leading light for the Scorpions in their very first season at the Eddie Wright Raceway in 2005, before injury forced his retirement during 2006. But he has remained an integral part of the club as its training officer. Stags’ team manager Richard Hollingsworth said: “It’ll be great to see Wayne back in a competitive meeting. He comes from Halifax, so he was the natural choice to spearhead the Dukes’ line-up, alongside Max Clegg. “Of course, Wayne also has major connections with Scunthorpe Speedway, both on-and-off the track. He was the first-ever captain of the Scunthorpe Scorpions at this particular track, and he was a near 10.00 man for us in 2005. “If anything his contribution behind the scenes has been even greater. BANK HOLIDAY FEAST OF ACTION AT THE EDDIE WRIGHT RACEDAY FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance, stage their first home Premier League fixture of the season against reigning league champions Edinburgh Monarchs at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm). There are 30-heats of speedway action on offer in total, with the second half consisting of the Scunthorpe Stags taking on the Halifax Dukes in a National League challenge match, where much of the interest will focus on the return of 2005 Scorpions’ skipper Wayne Carter to action. The Bank Holiday bonanza of action completes a busy weekend for the Scorpions. The team travel up to Scotland to face Edinburgh on Friday, and then venture to Newcastle on Sunday, for the first leg of their Knockout Cup tie with the Diamonds. Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “Bank Holiday Monday is a big day for this club. “Firstly, we need to get our home Premier League fixtures off to a flying start. That’s not going to be easy to do, because Edinburgh have started the season well, while we’re still finding our feet. “We will battle and fight all the way on Monday. Every point will count. We need a backs-to-the-wall performance, to take the points, and then our Premier League campaign will kick on from there.” Godfrey also stresses the importance of a good attendance on Monday. “The crowds that come to the 12 Premier League meetings at the Eddie Wright Raceway this season, the first one of which takes place on Monday, are the key to the future of this club. “I was honest with our supporters at the end of last season, and told them the crowds we needed for this year. “There’s so much I believe we do right. We provide what I believe is the best racetrack in the country. We put on a slick show and don’t hang around. “We’ve tweaked a few things this year at the request of the fans. For example, when we win at home, the riders are dropped off at the starting gate, so that the supporters have more of a chance to inter-act with them. “We treat entertainment right at the top of the list. We had quite a few new supporters here this year who had not been to speedway before and from the emails we’ve received since, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and couldn’t believe what a great night out the speedway is. “Our hardcore fans are a great bunch, and I would just like to re-iterate to them to keep on spreading the word, because once we entice new supporters along, I’m sure they will love what they see and come back.” This weekend sees changes in the riding order for the Scorpions, with the issue of the new Green Sheet averages. ‘Mr Entertainment’ Josh Auty, following a strong start to the season, moves to No 1, Nike Lunna shifts up to No 3, Theo Pijper takes over at No 5, and trump-card Alex Davies will drop to No 7. The Scorpions will again be without David Howe, who is recovering from damaging his shoulder in a workshop accident, and also have an injury doubt in Ellis Perks, who took a hefty fall at Kent on Monday, while representing his National League club, Cradley Heath and damaged his knee ligaments. Perks will miss the trip to Edinburgh on Friday, with Scunthorpe asset Matt Williamson covering for him. Perks will have a run-out at Buxton on Sunday, and if fit, will take his place at Newcastle on Sunday night. If he is not fit, then Tom Stokes will guest for him at Newcastle, while Williamson will again be brought in on Monday at No. 6. Bank Holiday Monday’s adult admission price for the double-header is £17. It’s just £2 more than a single Premier League meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway, for 15 extra heats of action. RETURN OF TOMMY THE GUN ADDS EXTRA SPICE THE RETURN of former Scorpion Thomas Jorgensen will add extra spice to this Friday’s clash at the Eddie Wright Raceway (7.30pm), as the FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance, take on the Redcar Bears in League Cup action. The Dane, who rode for the Scorpions for four seasons between 2011 and 2014, will guest for the Bears in place of the unavailable Stuart Robson. The Scorpions lost 40-53 at Redcar last Thursday, at the beginning of a sequence of four meetings in four days. But following a convincing 53-37 against Newcastle last Friday, the Scorpions are looking to start making their own Eddie Wright Raceway something of a fortress. “The return of Thomas Jorgensen certainly adds another dimension to Friday’s meeting”, says promoter Rob Godfrey. “He is a great guy, and was a popular Scunthorpe Scorpion. But speedway riders are competitive creatures, and once that helmet is on, Thomas will be looking to get one over his old team on Friday, just as our riders will be out to beat him. It’s all part of the make-up of being a professional sportsman. “He did have a good meeting against us on Saturday, when we put in a highly competitive performance at Berwick, and only went down by two points, with Thomas gaining a vital third place for the Bandits in Heat 15. The clashes between Tommy The Gun and our top five on Friday are bound to be mouth-watering.” Godfrey is looking for the Scorpions to maintain the momentum of their home form on Friday. He reflects: “It was an extremely good team performance against Newcastle last Friday. Our top five were rock solid, with every single one of them scoring well. And our two young reserves, Nike (Lunna) and Ellis (Perks), also did their job, taking points off the opposition. “Nike is already a real fans’ favourite at the Eddie Wright Raceway. He really doesn’t know when he’s beaten, and his last bend swoop in Heat 2 last week had the whole crowd on their feet. “One reason I think we’re set for a good year, is that we’re only going to get better and better. Not only the two reserves, but the likes of Alex Davies as well. After his visa problems last season, Alex more-or-less took a whole year out of the sport. “That rustiness showed itself in our first home meeting, but Alex worked hard on it, and last week he was a different rider. He’s been gradually looking more-and-more the part in our away meetings as well. I see him in the mould of another Sam Masters, or closer to home, Ryan Douglas. He’s got that cool Aussie determination. “I don’t think Redcar will make it easy for us on Friday. Lasse Bjerre has got his season off to an absolute flyer; he scored 17 points against us last week at Redcar, and only Theo Pijper was able to stop him recording a full house. We saw Lasse score good points for Peterborough around the Eddie Wright Raceway last season. Matej Kus has also been a tall scorer around here in the past, while we’ve often used Hugh Skidmore as a guest at the EWR, and Jan Graversen is a former Scorpion. “I think we’re in for another cracker of a meeting. But if we ride like we did against Newcastle, I see no reason why we shouldn’t come out of the meeting with another victory”, Godfrey concludes. Some terrific racing last night, including Nike nicking the verdict on the line in Heat 2 after a late surge, and Heat 10 was just brilliant, as the proverbial blanket could have been thrown over all 4. I think Theo went from second to first to third to second, although I think it was even more changes of position than that, absolutely fantastic race. And great performance from Scorpions. A very solid performance from the top five, with Nike & Ellis chipping as well.
