Speedway Star

Recommended Posts

On time this week, good stuff.  The other week when it was late, none on sale in TJ Jones the Saturday after, just week before's ish.  Spoke to a postie I know to say 'hello' to living nearby: "Hey Pat (!), why is my Star often late ?" He told me "I bet it's late every other week ? Well in this area (his & mine) we deliver one week Monday, Wenesday & Friday, the next it's Tuesday, Thursday & sometimes Saturday.  We don't like it any more than anyone else but that's how it is". Explains a lot....

Nice to see an interview or rather Q&A with Peter Thorogood in last weeks edition - he will be 93 this year!! Another speedway legend for all he has done for the sport over the years particularly at Arena

  • 4 weeks later...

Great piece from Tony McDonald this week in response to Matt Ford's comments the week before...

Tony's views would be shared by the majority in here I would think...

Also, Ben Findon mentions the timing of the fixture list and how it missed the Speedway Star deadline to be published last week..

He goes on to say how much the Speedway Star and Tracks need each other...

The sport in the UK certainly does benefit from having such a professionally presented production covering it...

My Star on time his week, good stuff.  Think Ford was maybe throwing a line or two, firstly I doubt very much the annual share out to each track following a World Final at Wembley was sufficient to buy a house.  Also most promoters from years back did well financially, sure, but doubt many were in a position to buy their stadium, tho King's Lynn were and Glasgow did recently of course.  John Berry mentions in one of his excellent Confessions Of A Speedway Promoter books that he offered to buy Foxhall Heath but the family who owned the stadium refused to sell....

Remind me, please, which tracks has Tony MacDonald owned or even promoted that he’s an expert? Or is he just another Matt Ford/Poole speedway hater?

Couldn't agree more, the sport will never recognise just how much he has done. His contribution has been immense....

Not just the sport but his personality shone through. Great days at Crayford.

I don't think he had any agenda...

He was just responding to what Matt Ford had said the week before...

With Tony's views echoing the majority on here I would suggest...

Martin Rogers also contributed to refute some of Matt's comments, someone who promoted when "the going was good"...

I always felt Speedway should have officially marked his contribution in some way - unless I missed it?

He might no be far off the mark considering at the time of the last Wembley world finals 25k would buy a decent house. The promoters may not have made enough to buy one from scratch but many mortgage's could have been paid off.
Just imagine today,  a sold out Wembley for speedway would create a minimum of £5 million in revenues - Although typical sold out events there generate upwards towards £11 million. we can dream!

Possibly so now ya mentions it, I often post at work whilst looking into, as opposed to at my monitor, to check whether anyone is behind me.  I can rarely be bothered researching figures, minutia if you will, always happy to stand corrected.  Was at the last Wembley World Final (I Was There) 'The 1981 Bruce Penhall One', not the greatest racing, other than Penhall v Knudsen & Penhall v Olsen, but huge crowd (91,000 apparently) & tremendous atmosphere....

Great final, was there too on back straight about ten rows from the front opposite the start/finish line. Penhall v Olsen & Knudsen absolute classic races.
