Workington 2025

Recommended Posts

Not enough riders, not enough venues, not enough income to sustain a professional sport.

I don't see a future for British speedway as a professional sport, and I don't see any desire to repackage it as an amateur/grassroots/competitor focussed sport. It's an outdated product held at outdated venues, which will not attract a new audience or competitor base.

Any talk about standardised engines, scrapping playoffs and wokeness (whatever that means) does nothing to address the core problem.

All moto2 engines made, sealed and serviced by triumph,moto3 Honda or ktm sealed engines, but of course wouldn't work in speedway!! why can't a sport run by amateurs learn from the professionals

Because it's run by amateurs!

Not that it won’t work and we cant or shouldn’t do it as I think we can and we will but speedway works on 100% wheel spin, every other bike sport works on 100% drive, it is exactly the opposite, like asking a colander manufacturer how to make a boat, moto 2 etc is purely down to achieving the most amount of power out of a unit and that will win races, speedway has nothing to do with actual maximum power, it’s how you can get the actual power available to get a spinning wheel to go forward it’s nothing to do with learning from professionals, remember when akrapovic tried to build a speedway silencer ? A world leading silencer manufacturer used in professional bike sports everywhere and where is it ? Nowhere because it didn’t work aswell as Dave kings Chinese made ones

If Drew had shown any aggression towards Justin he would have received a fine for bringing the sport into disrepute.

When riders have squared up to each other at Berwick they have been fined.

Remember Woofy saying last year to just let the riders fight instead of fining the riders. He said that despite all the brilliant races Emil has been involved in over the years, the clip on YouTube that has more views than all of them is the one where he is fighting with Scott Nicholls.

You generally find the only time speedway gets touched by the main stream sports media is when riders square up to each other.

To me, there's no issue with it.  Nobody gets hurt, a couple of riders full of adrenaline let of a bit of steam, and the sport gets some publicity.

100% agree with everything you have said. Being a Wimbledon fan in my younger days. If Belle Vue were in town you knew Their team PC, Morton etc and that would be the same with all the clubs. Now supporters turn up and 9/10 there will R/R plus a couple of Guest's.  We have had in the past Chris Harris Riding for Ipswich in the Semi final of the play offs then riding against them in the final!!!. People outside the sport must think its a proper Micky mouse sport and who can blame them.

Nothing will beat Jimmy Nilsen guesting for both Wolves and Cradley across two legs of the KO Cup in 1989!

Tatum did the same in the Dudley wolves trophy meetings and if he got a maximum for the spoons in the morning he had to get a maximum at night for wolves otherwise we would of nailed him to a dart board 😂

Can we get back to the comets

just wondering whether the Workington promotion will put out a statement early in the week saying what is or is not going on, it may help if the fans, sponsors and riders know what maybe happening, if it's money issue , maybe a fighting fund/go fund me could be set up.

In some ways your proving my point "Oh no speedway can't do that"

It can do it and it will but it’s not a question of just putting a seal on an engine, there needs to be a happy medium struck between the riders and  SCB and once in place that’s where the fun really starts trying to police it, I said earlier GM seem keen for the idea and I know people like broomie the engine tuner is all for change but you got to convince the riders and you know how they will react

We go on about promotion but it's time the riders the ones who are the only ones to make anything from speedway that without there buy in to change there will simply be no speedway. That day is coming much faster then ever before under the current situation the sport is in.

Workington have a great arena to watch speedway but there is no promotion of the sport they just rely on fans just turning up and watching 15 heats. No parade of any note, riders after a heat simply right back in the pits no victory lap. Could be so much better. Crowds been poor but they stick to 3pm on a Saturday start time !! Wonder why not other club in speedway runat that time and Day ?

Rant over and I like speedway and go to every meeting when not at work.

They won't have anywhere to ride soon.

In Britain perhaps but the decent riders will ride abroad and avoid here leaving the UK based riders who dont/wont/not good enough to ride overseas to make up the league.

Go Fund for human error or management being incompetent get a grip!

There has been a go fund for a break in and storm damage.

The fans have paid enough!

The only club that runs cash only system rings alarm bells. Dodged the tax man for too long. Over 50 sponsors board around the track were as that money gone?

From what I have heard Workington are in deep trouble. Not to mention there will be a big fine from the BSPA for this are we setting a go fund up for this?

The club is run by a crook time to wake up

Think that’s a bit strong at this stage without knowing what the issue actually is

‘The club is run by a crook time to wake up’ 2ndbend123

Quite a statement !, can you back it up with facts?

For a guy whos put his own time and substantial money into a ‘dream project’ I find that hard to believe, has always come across as a very genuine and enthusiastic person whos trying to keep the sport alive in Cumbria, perhaps he may have been a little naive in his book keeping, but many people have been that in speedway !

Totally agree Dean, not many really know what is going on so posts like that don't help anybody.
