I think r/r would be the better option: King, Edwards, Mulford & Pijper or Scott. Two riders stronger, 2 riders weaker (although Mulford isn't a lot weaker). Zischke would presumably have been available to guest in place of Riss (as that absence would have been known earlier) so it looks like the Bears made a rash choice.

Gavin Parr already commented that Glasgow booked Tate as soon as the GB team match was announced. So before Riss became ill.

Glasgow management seem reticent to tell of riders missing, usually leaving it until the day of the meeting.
allthegearbutnaeidea
Flint missed the Glasgow meeting to be a reserve in a European Pairs meeting on the Saturday, where he didn’t even get a ride. If I was a Glasgow fan I wouldn’t be happy with that at all.

If the plan all along was for Flint to be a non-riding reserve, should they just have taken someone else who didn't have a British league match that weekend? Drew Kemp for example? No offence to Flint, but he's not going to be the difference between GB winning & losing. Plus how much "experience" can he gain just by taking part in practice (if they had one). Of course if the plan was to share out the rides, but Flint was clearly slowest in practice, more understandable.

As you say Flint was never going to be the difference between winning and losing and there is little to choose between him and Drew Kemp so the obvious answer was to take Kemp on this occasion. What team does Flint ride for in the Polish league?

If Flint is one of the top 3 Brits then obviously use him, it's not like I'm suggesting GB not put their best team out. Not that this was their best 3 anyway. We scored a 4-2 in heat 2, Max got knocked off and they were never tailed off. Riding well doesn't always equate to scoring lots of points. On the other hand sometimes you can look at a score sheet and see a rider scored paid 4 from 3 rides and then when you look.more closely you find they didn't beat an opposition rider. Finally it is easy to criticise so what would your team have been?

Nagel and Hume instead of Howarth and Perry would give a better balance. Might even have allowed Joe Thompson, our first choice, in as well instead of Boughen.
