Why is speedway in decline?
Hackett replied to Youhave2minutes's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
The very same. We were regulars at Eastbourne and the children (16+20 now) were introduced to speedway in a carrycot. Week in , week out even in the NL days. We would go and watch speedway when they raced away at Lakeside and took them to Rye House when the opportunity allowed. Now with demise of Eastbourne (rinsed by Ian Jordan) and no Lakeside there is no speedway close to us in Greater London / Surrey. So we have had a trip to Oxford and a trip to Norfolk last year and watched a meeting at Kings Lynn + Ipswich but with no league racing on tv - HBO/TNT/BT it is now just a case of checking results on the BSN app + watching races on twitter. Our speedway fix now is the SGP series on TV, my daughter returns from University for each SGP and we watch it as a family. That's it !! The sport is in Cardiac arrest !! -

Paul Hurry is becoming a joke. Threw away a BP in our Home meeting vs. Belle Vue by not picking Rider of the Night (Musielak) and has now followed that up by blaming Stewart Dickson for track work taking place during a Home defeat to Leicester. I don't think Paul has a clue tbh and a new Team Manager for 2027 should be on Mayfield's list of jobs to do. -
I'm not sure a lot of Prem clubs could afford it tbh. There would need to be some kind of contract between club and riders, and that might come down to who can pay the most to get "their" men on standby. I doubt riders would do it unless the money was good to cover bikes over here as well, as you say.

Worth noting the only faller was Kemp who was attempting an outside pass on Tobias at the time! Ipswich seemed to be heading for a slender home win but two things went against them in the latter stages - firstly Kemps fall mentioned above meant they could got for a tactical in heat 12 and that Douglas was involve din about 5 of the last 6 or 7 heats! The t/s was for the conveniently or unfortunately ill Morris who hadn't done much in hi opening 2 rides! Kemp is such an enigma - one heat he is retiring after giving up at the back and then he is winding it on to try and pass Tobias / or outgating everyone to win - so inconsistent in a meeting! Track was dry - heat 2 the riders were finding it very tricky but for the rest of the night from where I was sat on the 2nd bend in the grandstand nobody seemed to be in any real trouble. I would give credit to Dickson for timing his tactical perfect and erm utilising his reserves well in light of Morris 'withdrawing' For the Witches Scott was great, Tobi faded after a good start probably me saying he may well go through the card after his first two rides. Tom again not quite enough - he couldn't land a blow to coin a certain phrase in heat 13 The Track still has the same track staff / Bob Ellis so how its prepared doesn't and shouldn't be too different from last season I would have thought unless the riders have asked for it to be so! Had Lawson and King been there I would have expected a (narrow) home win, combined i would expect them to get more than the 13 that PT and R/R got! -

Surely there is a case for each rider to get a couple of laps to try the track before the meeting starts? This would prevent things like this happening. Riders out individually or teams get a 5-10 session beforehand. The reason matches generally get better are that riders figure the track out. Surely it would be better for the sport if they were prepared at heat one. I know people will say, riders should know etc etc but if track prep is unpredictable why risk it. Give the riders a chance to entertain the fans - Today

I do agree 100%, but.... Promotion and Relegation will be a pipe dream unfortunately due to so few riders willing to ride over here, and the many second tier crowds not bringing in the income to pay riders to ride exclusively for them, meaning DU'ing will remain forever... For me, some major prize for winning the top league is the thing that would generate interest... Sadly, pretty much since the Sky money disappeared, and a nationally recognised company, (Skybet), sponsored the league, winning any of the leagues has had little rewards... The last decade, in particular, unfortunately has rendered any league largely irrelevant given the lack of publicity, the crowd numbers reducing, and the farcical operating model which is now set in stone as fundamentally the only way they can keep running their tracks... The inescapable feeling is that the tracks are now just open so riders can earn a living, and promoters can rub shoulders with them, enjoying their hobby... Nothing more, nothing less.. -

I bet you Witches fans wish Chris Louis was still there. Much better team and track. This guy Coleman was like the lot who moved into Reading and called them the Bulldogs! All ended in tears and this could go the same way. When it comes to British Speedway this lot dont know their arse from their elbow. -
Will play devil's advocate here If he didn't think it was dangerous why agree to tyre pack? If he thought it would make it worse why agree to tyre pack? Do many referees really have any clue about a track? Would he have called it off if Ipswich refused to tyre pack? Would Leicester have refused to ride? If that's how the Witches want the track then it should be that way - it's not up to the opposition! I say that they should've called their bluff....

How the standard of British finals has plummeted over the years matches the sports overall decline. -
r/r would be OK at home (Victor, JJ & reserves) but not necessarily away. In Stewart we trust!

Totally agree this so called league is terrible, throw in the big gaps between home meetings, the amount of guests etc and its no wonder even die hard fans are walking away. -

If they had prepared a half decent track at the outset there would have been no issues. The ref surely has the final say on track conditions/suitablity. He’s just a bad loser. -
Did a great interview, funny and obviously speaks very well. Friends with Mark Lemon who invited him along with Mark Webber.
-
They literally had the choice to make an offer to every/any Speedway rider on the planet except for the 35 that were already signed up!

Not only that, but with a business account the bank charge you to pay in cash, take out cash, every card transaction and every deposit or ATM transaction, so not even cash is free from bankers greed ( if it goes into the system) Currently with my business account if I pay in £1000 cash it costs me £7.50p, if I get outside the bank ( what bank is still open)and decide I do not need the £1000 cash after all and pay it back in , it costs another £7.50p, so end up £15 down for nowt, if we can all take cash, pay out in cash, we cut the greedy b****rds out ! Santander was the last bastion of free business banking, but no longer £10.90 admin charge every month, .90p every cheque deposit ATM or card transaction, and fees for paying in cash which now is largely done with your card at the post office as they have shut most of their branches !!

One league won’t make it better. What you really need to bring in new fans is two leagues which promotion and relegation. The sport needs jeopardy and punishment for finishing last. -
Batch up to the normal level I see with most points earned from beating non finishers. Foxes are never going to win carrying riders like that.
-
Sheffield missed Jack Holder but if the top flight adopted a squad system whereby clubs could name one or two other top riders who could cover for the very odd meeting here and there, say last night if MJJ could have rode, sure the cost won’t be cheap but he would still be getting roughly what you would have paid Jack per point anyway, it’s just the flight and arranging equipment that would have extra cost.
-
Up to THIRD in the league!!!!!!!!!! It looks like them or Ipswich for the last play off place!!!

Good bit of publicity came from the meeting, F1 commentator David Croft put a post on instagram, hopefully get more people through various clubs turnstiles.
