What will 2026 UK speedway bring?
mikebv replied to Lionsman66's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
The sad reality is not many in the UK will even notice, nor care, if five teams don't come to the tapes next year.... It's been ran like a private members club, with, for a good many, a hobby rather than a sport, for so long, to become almost irrelevant... Eastbourne, Somerset, Peterborough, Coventry, Swindon, Wolves, Stoke, Exeter, Reading, Newport, Lakeside, Newcastle, Hull, Rye House, and the IOW have all closed since 2005 from the top two leagues.. Hardly been a ripple from outside the sport has there? -
Surely it should be the end of season figures we should be looking at? Seven out of the nine CL teams ended with a total average above the 40 limit, so starting next season on 40 means it is weaker?

Championship Clubs, forced up into the " higher" league, have always had to run with "left overs" so no change there -

Would they? The court cases brought under "restraint of trade" regulations would be interesting. Withdrawal of licenses has been threatened many times but the ACU/BSPL know it's not an option. -

If it comes to it that there is to be no Prem in 2026 but one league the general consensus is that there will be an insufficient number of riders to field a league of More than nine teams at an absolute push. No one should be surprised if none of the Prem clubs come to the tapes in 2026 especially if they are expected to make do with “left overs” for team building. Much better to spend 2026 planning ahead for a seven or eight team Prem in 2027 - if at all. Otherwise it’s a sad farewell to the Aces, Lions, Tigers, Stars & Witches with special thanks to the surviving promoters who really will reap what they sow. -

Louis delayed his radio interview until Monday now. I wonder what he’ll have to say & what the reasons could be for delaying again. - Today

The way I see it is at the start of the season each meeting is only going to have 2 riders over 8 riding,I get that the limit is still 40 points so as every season it's up to team managers to get who they think will up their averages the most.

God knows when I'll see yesterday's Star. Last Thursday's arrived on Tuesday this week (5 days late) along with the previouis Thursday's (12 days late)

This is good stuff -- the kind of forum discussion that allows opinions to be aired! My opinion is that, as the teams are all starting 2026 at the same strength as 2025 then is is incorrect to suggest they are weaker, they are at the same level as last season. Cancelling out a second 8-pointer means more pointage to build a stronger middle order, or employ better reserves. Overall, the league starts out as per the past season, built to 40.00. Not weaker!

We even have Sunday deliveries now to "catch up" and meet their agreed contract with the Government... Luckily I have three Supermarkets and an ex WHSmiths, who still stock it, within 10 mins... Every Thursday on sale in each...

Phil Morris gave evidence in person at the save coventry speedway enquiry and did a good job. He has also made the show slicker by standardising things and meetings over the last couple of seasons have moved through more quickly.
-
Agree not the same strength, but same rules apply as last season. Its only on average that Teams limit increases.

Not as simple as that... Some Double Uppers may get their best individual sponsorship from someone who follows their Championship team... Eg a new bike paid for... To presume those already signed for Championship teams would "jump ship" for "more money" should one league happen, and that be the only option, is too simplistic... Especially as signed contracts hold people to account .. -

If there's no premiership and the championship seemingly don't want to strengthen, my days of live speedway in the UK will be over. The odd meeting over BSN fair enough but I'm not paying £20+ to watch a couple of veterans, NDL riders and those who never made it, it doesn't float my boat. Amateur racing for free or £10 max then I would go. -
Agree as the league strength is diluted, riders scores / average goes up, so the following season riders appear to be stronger/higher average, but the teams are actually weaker, if you get my drift
-
Definitely Royal Mail,in my case it’s find the Postman Competition.
-
It's the same number ie 40 but not the same strength.
-
Don’t think that is a point though as the 40pt limit is applicable every season just now.Your have to build a Team to the same strength as last season.?
