SPEED -A-AWAY
-
There was presumably a good reason why they changed from Dirt Track to Speedway in the early 30s. The longevity of the name suggests that it's been pretty effective. Any way, changing the name is akin to rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic, so expect the BSPL to be right on the case.

Glasgow v Edinburgh Scottish Cup 1st Leg 11th July

Why was this meeting not ran back in April? -
Eight teams, maybe, due to rider numbers, only five riders per team like Denmark, and make it "Elite" level.. Running on "best nights" for the tracks.. Home and Away once, top four into play offs.. No guests, given there are only 40 riders needed so plenty of "subs" to use from outside these 40... Sell this to TV... Each team also then runs a "second team" in a lower standard league which is ran, like now, with DU's and Guests galore, again, on nights which are the best for the tracks.. Make it five rider teams again, so 75 riders needed, no superstars given they will be doing the top tier in the UK, Poland and the GP's, (and maybe more leagues if Poland allow)... Linking up with Poland could be the key to making it happen as they could provide plenty of young riders to learn their craft over here as well as in Poland... The next five years in particular are fundamentally key as to how the sport survives, or not, in the UK given the ageing demographic of the "key" riders who currently take up two places.. Young/New rider development has to go (pardon the pun), "full throttle" over the next few years, with every club needing to provide regular NDL (and below), level opportunities to ride over the season.. Each club having to hold just one meeting each season, as now, is ridiculous given the demand (of the level required), will outstrip supply massively over the next few years... It really is time for that radical overhaul, which will bring some short term pain, but is so desperately needed... One league for the "professional promoters" and one league for the "hobbyists", which the "pro promoters" can also use as a development conveyer belt for their No1 team...

Happy to hear the news of Tai's retirement. Tai has given the fans everything and more and he had nothing left to prove, He's more than earned the respect from the fans, fellow riders, owners and promoters. I thank Tai for the memories he's given me as a Speedway fan and I wish Tai and his Family all the very best in life.

Also, well done both teams for making the final again. It was looking sketchy earlier in the season. -

Why is speedway in decline?

You’ll need to wish me good luck with that! - Today

I remember his debut at Sheffield all those years ago 0,0,0, - the following week i think he scored 11 or 12 and it was clear he was going to be good! Long and happy retirement to him and thanks for all those wonderful SGP and World Cup nights!

Lions v Witches, Monday 6th July

We can have one big league, but only with eight teams i.e. the same number as in Poland's top flight given the limitation of available riders (and rider capability). now and in the near future. The challenge for the next five years isn't really the quality of riders that will have come through to replace the current "capable" riders but the ability of promoters to have somehow evolved from being hobbyists to a commercially profitable biased organisation delivering a healthy future for speedway in the UK. On the point of riders coming through, Dan Thompson was barely starting out five years ago whilst the likes of Cooper Rushen and Will Cairns are only in their first season. These three alone are on the right trajectory to become number ones in the not too distant future and there are a good number of young riders who will continue to progress well beyond their current capability. The resolving of the hobbyist promoter may have a future too. There are a few of the current promoters who do actually understand what is required and the arrival of Richard Coleman may just be the catalyst to get things moving in the right direction . It was encouraging to hear him say last Thursday at Leicester, that UK speedway needs TV but before it can happen UK speedway needs to understand what's actually required and set about becoming something desirable to the TV companies. He added that he continues to speak with those who run UK speedway and fellow promoters about such requirements and was hopeful for the future of UK speedway. Yes only words, but from somebody who is far, far more professional than a hobbyist and someone looking at the future as something more than getting through one season at a time. -
The White Knight started following Speedway?
-
That would do for me. I was thinking the same myself. Keep it simple and easy to understand for the uninitiated. DIRT TRACK!!! It's what it says on the tin.
-
Best wishes to him and enjoy your family life.
-
Best decision made. After all he’s achieved the highest accolade in the sport more than once. It’s time to put the family first now.

Chris Louis leaving was a disaster for Ipswich. This guy Coleman is like when Posselthwaite went into Reading and changed everything which ended in tears. He wont be here long and soon realise he cannot change things in British Speedway.
