drvortexz 9 Posted June 30, 2015 Without ever knowing its history, the first I really knew of the confederate flag was when Somerset Speedway began using as their club emblem and always associated it simply with being a "rebel". Since the Charleston shooting in the USA 2 weeks ago it seems that over there the flag has very racist connections. The creator of the flag William.T.Thompson referred to the design as "the white mans flag" With what the confederate flags symbolises in the USA should Somerset still continue to use it? Star Lady 5,400 Posted June 30, 2015 Of course they should continue to use it. This is the UK and we should not follow the USA in all things. After all I doubt many of us think we should have the right to bear arms !

kbt 87 Posted June 30, 2015 So where would it stop,Pirates, bloodthirsty characters,Bandits, robbing sods,Witches, black magic conitations,Devils, satanic So and so's .Leave the rebels alone!!
drvortexz 9 Posted June 30, 2015 Ironically, as horrified as we would be to see any team using the swastika, its origins are a lot more peaceful than the confederate flags. Before the Nazi's decided that they wanted it as their symbol the swastika was (and still is) used in Hinduism and Buddhism.

JCookie 753 Posted July 1, 2015 (edited) Are we saying Ryan Fisher etc view Somerset on the same level as the KKK? Edited July 1, 2015 by SavalasCloutingU21Champ
Guest Posted July 1, 2015 Good point really,,, if the 'P C' gang got involved, they might have something to say,,, do any German teams have the Swastika ??? No because it is an illegal symbol in Germany, Ironically, as horrified as we would be to see any team using the swastika, its origins are a lot more peaceful than the confederate flags. You're missing the point. The confederate flag represents and is a symbol of racism and white supremacy, hardly appropriate in our so called "family sport". Devils, Witches, Bandits etc. are not comparable in offensiveness. Maybe Somerset could use a little imagination and find an alternative symbol of their rebelliousness for their race jacket. Maybe Somerset could use a little imagination and find an alternative symbol of their rebelliousness for their race jacket. Nonsense. The confederate flag represents the Rebel states during the American War of Independence and has remained the symbol of the Southern states ever since. Some, however, might have twisted it to represent something other than that. The Confederacy flag cannot solely be seen to be a symbol of white supremacy simply because those who practice such beliefs use it as their banner. Or is the Union Jack to be deemed racist because right wing groups use it here ? A devil represents Satanism, black magic and heaven knows what else. Buxton's Hitman represents someone who kills other people for money or clan loyalty. Taking it to ludicrous conclusions, some might indeed find such emblems offensive (although I suspect that if everyone's objections were taken into account we'd be left with Barrow's appalling 'Happy Faces' and little else). Most of us, I suspect, would never even think about it and just accept them as absolutely harmless team nicknames and colours. I can't believe that such ridiculous political correctness has even reached the BSF. Edited July 1, 2015 by Halifaxtiger

The Barrow Happy Face would have to be the first to go. Surely it relates to drug taking?
AlanF 295 Posted July 1, 2015 The Confederate flag is a living, breathing symbol of white supremacy. Since the Governor of South Carolina suggested it be banned from public buildings, six black churches in the south have been set on fire. In my view it has no place in modern American life. However, the issue is not relevant to the UK or Somerset speedway. I don't see any problem at all with the Somerset Rebels.
