The White Knight 9,039 Posted February 7, 2017 Mauger also was not flavour of the month at Swindon when he brought Bob Kilby off he had to get an escort out of the stadium. Apparently Jack Millen required a Police escort out of the Stadium at Peterborough (I think). I can't remember his offence - but it definitely happened. I think it was something to do with kicking some lights following a dubious Refereeing decision, but I could be wrong about that.

WK Jack always had a reputation and i only see him ride three times but i have read that he was great with young riders advice (ect) and was a friendly bloke.

That's it Sid - he was very friendly with everyone after the Meeting. He didn't say much before a Meeting though. He always tried to Team Ride too - woe betide any Rider that tried to pass him when he was covering the Track. Could be a bit hard at times - but that was part of his charm. I think that was the occasion that he dropped kicked the phone positioned at the start over the starting gate! That's it Sid - he was very friendly with everyone after the Meeting. This list may be meaningful only to those of us 65+ !!!! I'm in my late fifties and saw most of those riders except Ivor Brown and the two Chris' but knew of their reputations. Learnt much later that Ivan Mauger hated Ivor Brown!
lucifer sam 3,953 Posted February 8, 2017 Wont get many from my neck of the woods nominating Goodwin after he nearly killed David Walsh one night at Shawfield I remember going up at Glasgow when Oxford were there in 1994. On the parade, Mick Poole received boos, but he just ignored them. It then came around to Burt (Martin Goodwin). The Tigers faithful booed him even more - his response was to grin and cheerfully wave at them. He was a character. All the best Rob

steve roberts 9,246 Posted February 9, 2017 Yes - I think that is what I was thinking about steve. Thanks. Recall reading an article some years ago that at the very time of Jack's tragic death in a road accident his estranged wife, Cheryl, heard her name called out by Jack. I'd like to believe it as true...who knows what there awaits us as we pass into the 'other world'.
Paulco 7,080 Posted February 9, 2017 I think that was the occasion that he dropped kicked the phone positioned at the start over the starting gate! Saw Ivan Mauger kick the phone around the centre green at Coatbridge . In 1991 the then Glasgow promoter , Neil MacFarlane , was seen arguing with the referee on the phone at Powderhall . He the proceeded to rip the phone off the pole it was located on . In later years he admitted he wasn't actually talking to anybody , and the phone ripping was all done for effect to get the crowd wound up .

The late Bernard Crapper admitted to me same at Oxford...he was just passing the time of day with the referee but used plenty of arm waving to get the crowd going to spice up a dull meeting!
