  1. I'd have thought that mentioning Poole and Cheetahs in the same sentence, is inviting some interesting comments!

  4. Dont concern yourself about anyone in the Bowes family, you wont find a more genuine friendly family in the sport of speedway. Cheers Darrell Branford

  6. Adrian Smith will be another in quite a long line who have seen the sport from outside and thought "Wow! What potential".... So therefore, got involved, .. And, like others before him, would have gone into it thinking that all he had to do was highlight to the those already incumbent all the obvious inherent flaws that all can see hold the sport back in the UK... And then simply convince them that there are a great many alternative ways of moving this great sport forwards... However... Like so many others before him he has failed to take into account how insular and short term focused so many within the sport are, with many appearing to be "quite happy" with their lot as they hold 'some power'... Failing to grasp of course that they 'hold power' in a sport that hardly anyone has heard of, never mind cares about.. "Ideas People" are not wanted....

  13. Having watched all of them most weeks during their attachment to Wolverhampton, my view is that during their time with the club Olsen was by far the best rider of the three. Spectators expected him to win every time he came to the tapes and he rarely lost to anyone other than a high ranking opponent, especially at Monmore Green. Nielsen was on a steep learning curve for the first two of his four seasons with the club and although a high scorer in his last two seasons he was still well below the dominating level that he reached after moving to Oxford via Birmingham. Hans was not as adept at the art of team riding in those early stages in his league career as he later became. He left for Birmingham in 1981 when Wolverhampton dropped down for an ill-fated season in the National League. Sam was phenomenal at times at Monmore but he was sometimes erratic and prone to on-track errors which were rarely seen from the other two. I would still place Sam marginally ahead of Hans during their Wolverhampton years. In addition to the seasons referred to in an earlier post by Iris, Ermolenko also rode for Wolverhampton in 1998, 2001, 2003 and 2004, by which time he was well past his peak. My opinion only relates to their time spent with Wolverhampton and not their overall careers.

  14. Lots of stadiums have this ridiculous no food or drink ruling. A lot of football stadiums play the non violence card saying that full bottles can be used as weapons, so take them away but then when you get in the ground they are selling drink! Alot of people with specific dietary requirements, health issues, oldies (myself included) don't/can't eat unfrozen cheap fastfood or fizzy drinks stodge so need to take food and drink with them. I know King's Lynn have this rule (whether it is enforced more at stock cars than speedway I'm not sure ) which doesn't effect myself cause I don't go there nowadays but if I ever did decide to go back and was refused entry cause I had a bottle of water of some light refreshments then I'd ask for my admission money back and go home, probably never to return! Back to the subject matter - good luck in saving the Birmingham Brummies. If the consortium pulls this off then it may work out better than the Masons era cause living that far from the track you promote at like David and Peter did can't always be conducive to the tracks well being?

  15. Had a walk down to Northside today, plenty of activity from around a dozen volunteer's, the base is in and looks well packed down, plenty of camber on both bends and also on straights, inside curb being laid, about 2/3 done, shale ex Derwent park being sorted to be laid in the next few weeks, changing rooms and pits to be marked out and built, so still lots to do and winter weather on its way !! Good luck to the people behind the venture,

  18. So basically “all is well here, more of the same please!” Except it’s a shocker to get rid of the rising star scheme in the championship. Although I don’t know why I’m surprised, I just don’t get it one little bit. I’ve said it many times but it should also be 6 man teams. Time and time again there is always a rider shortage so limit the number of riders needing to be found in the first place!

  19. A correct visa is surely the proper visa, why can it be voided unless the rider and Employers are not telling the truth.Typical Speedway Promoter, doesn’t even know the criteria.IMO ps Tero’s employer supposedly oversees the sport.!!!

  22. The only thing he can be described as is a liability! How many meetings did he actually ride in and how many heats did he actually complete? Think he ought to retire, he can't afford any more injuries at his age. Stick to the day job, digging holes for PBHS with his mate Proctor.

  26. The latest (and last so far except for any Eastbourne adjustments) is issue 23 dated 29th October and effective 1/11/21. Although this doesn't have any actual averages for the Rising Star riders - merely listing where in their teams 1-7 they fit!! Obviously for 2022 any British riders will also have the 2.5% reduction for team building.

  27. No idea mate i dont personally know Connor or what he said, my involvement in speedway has been minimal in the last 2 years, but after knowing the Bowes family for over 30 years i stand by my previous comment about there integrity. Darrell Branford

  28. What is a shame, is all the effort that happened to get speedway in Birmingham again and to get speedway into the Sittingbourne dog track, for it all to suddenly collapse. Add in the mix Eastbourne, a track owned by a speedway dynasty, one can only feel 'the end is nigh'!

  29. Are you related to Steve Shovlar by any chance? He used to hijack the old Oxford Speedway Forum with his usual 'banter'. I check out this thread expecting to read news about Oxford and find that it's bombarded by comments regarding Poole?

  30. Sam Ermolenko because he rode for longer than Olsen and Nielsen did at Wolves! Olsen had a massive impact at Wolves as did Nielsen!

  32. Think Cook would do that job well. Doyle and King as the top 2 would take some pressure off Cook and a Cook/Riss partnership in the engine room at 3 and 4 would be a good one Doyle Heeps Cook Riss King Starke Kemp Still like the look of that team and it fits

  34. We were stopped from going in the bar for a pint and a warm and reduced to a hole in the wall serving £4-50 lager plus stodge and chips. It was made clear we couldn't consume something healthy brought by ourselves plus my wife is a type 1 diabetic. The racing was poor and viewing constricted. Having spent years attending the most basic stadiums and fields watching Grasstrack it was a dreadful experience. For a new or occasional supporter they would never return. The stadium and speedway are separate entities but it's up the to the speedway team to negotiate something that make the paying fans welcome and wanted. I won't be returning.

  36. How can you say that you're very confident that they will run when they have not agreed to a deal buying the club yet? Then if they do the big rent increase to get over.

  38. Tried to poach him from Newcastle just before the transfer deadline with a promise of machinery & a place in 2022. This was one of the reasons why Rob Grant walked away from Newcastle before changing his mind.

  41. The huge difference between Eastbourne and Kent and Birmingham is that the landlords want speedway at their stadium and not just as a revenue stream. The Dugard family have been involved in the sport for decades and that runs deep.

  42. Thanks mate - absolutely over the moon. 14 long years. Hard to believe I was 21 when the speedway shut! Now… where’s the best place to find riders averages? Need to get fantasy team building
    1 point
  43. I think that’s really my problem. Transparency of averages! It’s fun at the end of the day to see who you can fit in and make a team up yourself. It’s pretty confusing when there’s two pages of people unsure on a riders average really don’t you think? Even if the promoters know. Maybe that’s even worse that we are in the dark!

  44. Yep huge congratulations to all at Oxford for achieving something which must have seemed a million miles away not that long ago. Particularly pleased for @Matt Davis who will be able to take his kids there as he went as a lad, dream coming true stuff for him and his family

  45. He had his little measuring wheel out for a walk when I was there and I cant remember if he said 298 or 308 metres long but the straights and corners are what you quote width wise... Don't know about any amateur meetings soon as there is still a great deal to do infrastructure wise but when Andy and Steve get going they really crack on so who knows... be great for Workington as a town that is for sure... 46. Weren't fixed race nights brought in to prevent clashes with Sweden and Poland? Seeing as hardly anyone now rides in Sweden, Poland and the UK anyway, are they still actually needed?

  47. Jon was with Neath in 1962 and joined Long Eaton the following year. He averaged nearly 7 points per match with Neath, in his first season of league speedway. His record time at Weymouth was remarkable in that it was 3.4 seconds faster than the average winning time for 14 of the 16 heats in the Best Pairs event, in which Jon scored 12 points from 4 rides. The next best winning time was 74.0 and Jon recorded times of 76.0 and 76.8 in two of his winning rides. This might suggest that the very quick time of 72.4 was dubious, except for the fact that he recorded it twice, in heats 12 and 14!

  48. I always enjoy Composts' questions and of course BL65's answers. In the Weymouth thread a name from the past I admired-Jon Erskine cropped up. One of the original Newport team- 1962 was before Newport opened , so I think Jon must have been riding for Long Eaton. Interestingly enough 1962 was the only time Jon appeared in the PLRC Final.

  49. Just wanted to note the recent passing of Pat. Whilst never a star he was riding for Canterbury when I attended my first ever meeting as a 10 year old in 1968 and even then to me he looked like someone from the past with his WW2 goggles and his long scarf over his face, pretty sure he had white boots at the time also. Always had time for the kids and was usually smiling broadly.. Its riders like Pat that make speedway and he left a lasting impression on me at the time. R.I.P.
