Finished the book today. A bit 'wordy' at the beginning but soon settled down into a 'good read'. A fine overview of speedway in the 70's and 80's besides Peter Collins personal story. For those who cannot afford numerous books on speedway etc, this book goes along way towards telling 'what you need to know' about speedway from the 70's to the present day.3 points

I suspect BSPL are just running it because they think they should. IOW are running the Women's Championship because they believe in it and are committed to it.3 points

Some cracking racing... Track staff did a great job given the dry, slightly windy conditions.. Track had both an inside and outside line which allowed passing.. Not seen Doyle so down on power before, even when leading the Aces riders he was blocking them more than moving further away from them.. Lidsey, Rew, Kurtz, Bewley and Emil absolutely top class entertainment... And Charles Wright did a "special" in Ht 14 to block pass Rew brilliantly.. Proper "hard riding" as Emil had done to Kurtz earlier.. One gripe is the No7's.. No disrespect but why are these lads riding in the top league? Can't be good for them.. They need ring fenced positions in Div 2 as they often dont bring much to the meetings other than racing against themselves.. Run in the topl flight with six man teams and share out the money not spent on the 7th roder on the six that do.. No other sport makes it compulsory to include "youth team" level competitors to go up against world class level opponents, so in such a technical, specialised sport as Speedway it makes it even more of a poor idea.. Norick once again continues to impress and is developing nicely, and Ben Barker rode his whatsits off as usual for minimal rewards.. You would certainly not feel £24 is too much to watch entertainment like this.. Roll on next week to watch Artem...2 points

The winner of last years GPChallenge is riding in this years GP series, that’s what you want. Are you sure he should be there? I agree with the GPChallenge, but does it always throw up the best rider for a 10 meeting long GP series. Riding at GP level is different to riding in any league. So much mental commitment as well as other resources needed in abundance. Vaculik dropped out of GP series for a bout 4 years (if I recall correctly) so to “mature”as a rider. Lambert was in the GPs as the SEC champion, dropped out of the GPs, came back last year, from series reserve, a different (more mature) rider. Sometime human judgement is better than statistics ie league averages. It must be a headache for those that have to decide and this discussion we having now takes place every year…….just seems to have started earlier this year.2 points

I think that would make Ipswich far weaker, Knudsen is averaging about 2 points less than Barker in the Champ!2 points

Should of been something like that at the start, the season is over in reality in terms of any real result but it would be nice to see a few home wins2 points

Guess they are needed as the male riders aren't doing much these days...2 points

Well seeing as the Friday meetings already have a thread... Better start the Weds ones lol1 point

As per norm, that’s well summarised - Nilsson went through 3 qualifying meetings (at least, as not sure he had to do a Swedish qualifier too so possibly 4) so was well deserving of his position. This is probably the reason why the GP challenge has been moved away from a UK track.1 point

I heard he flew to Poland to have an operation on his wrist to speed the process up. Think he'll still be back, but these things take time I guess. He did say he wouldn't come back until he was fully fit - citing Jack Thomas trying to rush back last season and doing more harm than good to his wrists.1 point

4 more rides each than we would have seen them in last season,so maybe better value than last year.I know what you are saying though.1 point

I was at a press conference where Ivan Mauger was talking about how he disliked the GP selection & that no matter how hard you tried if the selection panel didn't like you you were never going to get in. He went on to say the old way was the best when he could wake up on New Years Day with a licence A motor bike & a dream to be the World Champion & before the year was over that could happen but today you know on that first day you can't be the champion.1 point

Pirates to complete the league double according to my predictor Mind you it has been a bit wonky of recent times and I've had to go to the docs with a touch of squeaky bum! Only thing that is certain is that me knobbly knees will be on display in the luvvly sunny weather1 point

The basis that in most races of the first half either Jason or Emil or Mulford are in each heat therefore it will remain reasonably close till heat 10 and therefore Emil will be out in Heat 11 with Jason1 point

Depends what you want to base it on. If you want it to be the best 15 in the world then surely GP, SWC, league form and everything else should come into it too? Kim Nilsson deserves his place in the series as he won the challenge, however would you say he has enhanced the GP's so far? I wouldn't, and I wouldn't want him or someone of a similar standard in at the expense of anyone else better had he not won at Glasgow last year and just missed out instead.1 point

Hopefully many will still rock up and attend.. Luckily I pick and choose who to watch so dont fork out for each meeting.. Been to the PCMM and the opening Sheffield match which were both good meetings.. More of the same tonight would mean a decent evening out... Laguta next week too so someone else worth paying to see..1 point

They also have a reserve in Blodorn that can smash the Witches middle order round the NSS1 point

Is the score going to be 46-44 as the poster says, if so I will put a bet on .1 point

Oh happy days will it be on before or after the wrestling? anyhoo, expect a decent home win - the Witches home defeat last week needs a strong peformance tonight but they don't think will get a win tonight - i reckon up to 40 points mainly from Doyle / Emil - hope I am wrong tho1 point

Think it was a Bell Magnum Ivan & Ole used & meant to say "they come with a peak already attached, though it can be removed or easily snap off or detach without necessarily breaking in a spill". Recall Italian brand AGV made light-ish off-road full-face helmets, presumably used in Moto-X as, like the Bell Moto3, they were fitted with studs so as to attach a peak. Think it will be in SCB regs somewhere about full-face lids being compulsory. From personal experience, I can confirm a full-face helmet will help prevent facial injuries. Years ago I got swiped off my road bike by a car "I didn't see him, to be honest I wasn't looking. I never do as I know this road (!)", despite wearing an almost new Arai 'gold star' ACU / FIM road & race-approved full-face helmet I suffered a concussion & lost 4 teeth (!). Bell Helmets once ran an advertising campaign "if you have a 10 dollar head, get a 10 dollar helmet"....1 point

You need to find out what the “certain standards” are. According to the ACU track racing regulations helmets for speedway , grass track and moto cross have to have an ACU silver stamp but they don’t specify what standard has to be reached to get the stamp. The machine examiner just has to check that the helmets have the appropriate stamp and that’s it. However the ACU regulations give Youth riders the option of either full face or open face ( because of the difficulty in sometimes getting a full face helmet to fit a small head properly). Since no similar option is given for adult rider one presumes open face is not an option. In the Speedway Office at Lakeside there was a poster on the wall with specifications for crash helmets and since only a full face one was shown I presume open face was not acceptable. Like a lot of things in Speedway it’s not at all clear what the regulations actually do say but I’m reasonably sure they don’t put the silver stamp on open face helmets any more.1 point

This part I agree with most, nothing against the guy, but Sam Masters racing as a number one in the Prem, doubling up in the Champ & racing in Poland, while 5 point Brits can't get a Champ spot doesn't sit well with me! We can't trust the promoter's to use Brits first, so will have to put in rules to ensure they are1 point

The idiocy of a regionalised Spring BSN Cup and a regionalised KOCup draw has a lot to answer for. The lunacy of then scheduling the corresponding League matches so early in the cycle compounds the issue. Why not have corresponding League fixtures in late July or August. I'm told the Promoters used to sit down in Rugby and plan Fixtures on a day but since Covid it's now done by John Campbell. Poor bloke, can't be easy or a job anyone would want. Surely if they have a Spring Cup insist last 2 league fixtures are v teams you face in that Group and make KOCup an open fair draw.1 point

Yes, and we even do have a few more, who are not that far behind Celina. Best of the up-and-coming German speedway ladies after Celina is Hannah Grunwald, and another who is going quite good on a 500cc bike is our Nepalese-born Patricia Erhart. There's about half a dozen of them girls in German speedway racing now, plus several more in the youth competitions.1 point

I agree he did. But from a 5 pointer, he looked like he had a 650 out there. He's never been like that in all his years at Lynn. Some of that must be down to how poor Lynn was.1 point

My feelings are somewhat different regards the current SGP 15. I believe they should be required to make an entry into the qualification series if they think there is a chance they may not make the top 6 for an automatic seeded spot for the next year. If they finish outside the top 6 for any reason & have not entered the qualifiers then they cannot be considered for a wild card spot for the following season. This would stop those that maybe believe they are entitled to a place coming in each year & stopping the chance of a young rider that has invested vast amounts to navigate a path to the world championship, My idea is in essence the same as your line 3 but my idea means the current SGP riders have to make a commitment. I understand that injuries may cause a rider to fall out of the top 6 but that's all part of the game that you cannot predict.1 point

I'm not sure what it is you are expecting. The rules used are the rules agreed at the agm. If you can think of a better way to resolve the current problems with the rules please clarify. I agree there must be a better way but I can't think of one.1 point

Don't disagree with too much of that. They got it badly wrong in the winter and its very difficult to rectify that once the season gets going.1 point

Few things with this.....the budget was never going to stretch to both Laguta & KK. You are assuming KK would have maintained that average, it was gained from only two meetings and those were against sides without top end power. Laguta could very well average 10 at home, and him coning in at #1 allows Klindt to go into the middle order where his scores will improve. Thomsen probably won't be the strong reserve Pickering would and Jakobsen should have been but since Josh got injured we've had one good score from number six so Thomsen won't do much worse. And assuming Pickering can sort his shoulder he will improve the side in place of Jorgensen or MPT (who I feel is being exposed a little at #5). They still look unlikely to get away results but at least we might be competitive and have at least a theoretical chance of some bonus points. It also has to be taken into account just how good Sheffield are at Lynn, especially with R/R for their weakest top five member. Chalk and cheese compared to Wolves or P'boro.1 point
