  1. That sums up speedway. What a meeting and a huge thank you to every rider who took part and showed why as a spectacle speedway can produce high octane entertainment when needed

  7. Woryna's becoming one of my favourites riders, I rate him highly, 100% committed to every race he competes in and isn't afraid to take risks like we saw in Prague. Bright future ahead for him imo.

  9. I wanted cookie to prove everyone wrong this season but it seems to be quite the opposite. Hopefully he is okay and gets the support he needs. Maybe it is time to step away from the sport and focus purely on himself and his family.

  11. It follows on from the non screening of the SoN2 last weekend. Coleman said that the production costs for this meeting and the SGP 2 & 3 were prohibitive and giving the relatively low viewing figures it simply is not a good use of the limited funds available in the sport. He also said they they are working towards getting the SGPs back on track financially which is the number one priority. It seems that the championship was in jeopardy and could have ended up being promoted by the FIM and only perhaps three or four events. The championship had been losing millions. Mayfield Sports had/have sold out the first five GPs so it is looking optimistic. The decision not to screen SoN 2 was taken many months back and the same for SGP 2 & 3. WBD buys the television rights from Mayfield and it is up to WBD how they choose to use them. Some events don’t have particularly high viewing figures and the job Mayfield inherited was to try and sort out the Speedway GP first and foremost. Cost benefit analysis means it does not make sense to screen SoN 2 live. Even though the cameras were at the track, they could not film or broadcast it because Mayfield have sold the rights and would not be able to broadcast it. Another reason is the cost of the rigging. It would need to be in place on Thursday and this cost an additional Euro 60k -80k. Some general comments are made. Then Coleman moves on by saying they have concerns outside the the world GP particularly with the leagues in Sweden, Denmark and Britain and says that there is no point in doing a great at the top of the pyramid if it is crumbling underneath. There are a number of systemic issues and a number of issues in terms of governance and direction that need to be solved. There is a lot of naval gazing that goes on in speedway. Ultimately he thinks that there sport has five years to turn itself around. There are a number we are trying to move the needle on. But we have only been here for six months or so it is a challenge but hopefully we can keep as much goodwill as possible from the fans and do the best job we can. That is about it. Hope it is useful

  12. Spoke to Danny afterwards and he said he didn’t feel confident in the track and wasn’t making gates so they went with Lawson although Danny was asked first

  13. It’s a speedway track that requires a nice bit of throttle control and skill which seems to be beyond a lot of modern day riders with bikes that require it.

  15. Agree. And guests - the single biggest reason for UK's decline in my opinion. I refuse to attend again until they get rid of them. No other leagues use them, so UK doesn't need them either.

  16. Is it? Don't think it was what they were aiming for before the meeting. 8+ would have been. Really? Last meeting Bowes rode at Poole he beat the opposition no1. Do you follow scores before commenting? Tate got 4 and even if Bowes got zero, how is that far better? Anyway Dan T prob back for second leg going by Leicester press release which says they think he could be back on June 11th if practice sessions go ok. So one less excuse to use.

  18. well not doing the Bellevue gps, off to Poland instead 4 meetings in 4 days including the Wroclaw gp, (but no tickets.) will see what happens.

  19. A shame no one broadcasts it over here... The Polish league being shown would certainly help boost interest in the UK version of the sport, who could "piggy back" off it... Admittedly, given the enormous difference in the operating models, and level of riders, the boost may not last too long, but that woukd be down to the UK promoters to resolve, and maximise any potential growth...

  25. How did a strengthened Poole side lose to Edinburgh…. Tate far better than Bowes would have been and Harris scoring less than half of what Thompson would have Might be a good result for Poole in this competition but even a 10 point score for Thompson would have been 51-39 …. Bowes never scores at Edinburgh… Edinburgh would be strong contenders to beat Poole over 2 legs of Thompson and Bowes both rode

  26. Disappointing to lose in the last heat but a great meeting, enjoyed the stream throughly. Great result for Edinburgh and a good result for Poole.

  28. Great race and this sums up what the sport is all about and takes you back to the days of Hackney on a Friday night. The Polish scene has got it so right and the UK just cannot compete at this level. Speedway is good in the UK but does not come anywhere neat this standard.

  31. I was reading that Gary May was helped with team manager duties last night by……..Ryan Guest! How did he get in on the act? The sport is saturated with rider guest appearances and now we have a Guest guesting as a bloody team manager😀 Only in speedway as we all keep saying.

  34. Yes and as someone who used to contribute to that (albeit years ago) i was always surprised that the governing body of the sport never seeemed interested or able to do something themselves. The Extraliga league has a great app!

  36. Good to know this, in my view it was Tobi and then either Lawson or King - Lawson for the potential and King given hed been very consistent all night. We often get why wasn't X picked for heat 15 - there is always a reason and sometimes just good to know it! Also Scott had a great first / second bend in his 2nd heat to take a deserved and also needed victory as Thomson was shaping up so well. Also finally 20 years after this kind of thing was first done - nice to be the BSPA site carry live updates!

  39. It simply shows how speedway has now followed other sports (and perhaps society in general) with attentions spans of a goldfish. The season is in late May - it started in earnest in early to mid April - yet we have constant demands for 'oh this isnt good enough and we demand change' - Change for changes sake often backfires as some football cliubs are finding out! I still find it (insane) that a current up and coming rider won't get a spot - given to an ageing has been - no disrespect to Kennet here but thats what he is!

  41. Very interesting programme notes from the Witches promotion effectively calling out promoters being 'too willing' in calling off fixtures particuarly if their is just the slighest risk of rain! Its a habit that needs breaking! He also cited the last rain off in the FIM/SGP was in 2021 - just 2 rain offs in 200 meetings!

  42. A fair few times in their youth days - in fact I think Cairns rode a few times for one of the Armadale National Junior League sides. And both have been good on NDL visits last year - Cairns with an 18 point maximum. They'll both do well tomorrow, I think.

  44. Whilst I agree with some of the comments highlighting the financial implications of screening these meetings and the fact that clearly Mayfield Sports can't afford, or don't want to spend the necessary sums to show them, there are in my opinion some anomalies in all of this, and indeed in the way the whole series has been promoted over the past few years. Firstly let's examine WBD, who proclaimed endlessly we were entering a "new era" of speedway. This crowd then gave control of the whole thing to a bunch of people who had very little, if any, knowledge of the sport. Incredibly they created a rolling package whereby considerably more than 100 people (honestly!) were transported around Europe for each SGP. The costs of this must have been enormous! Not only that, but they then tried to "Formula 1ise" the world championship by creating the most ridiculous system of running in front of empty stadiums for what was essentially practice, and made it even more ridiculous by then dishing out world championship points to the riders who got to the final 4 man race of the practice, again in front of empty stadiums. You couldn't make this utter nonsense up!! As if that wasn't enough they introduced drones and steadfastly refused to change this introduction when many fans complained bitterly that it interfered with their TV viewing. TV viewing that was proving to be costly and expensive. Their 10 year master plan quickly fell apart and they panicked and pressed the eject button to escape at the half way stage through their get-out clause. But before we leave them, let's not forget that they also made the whole series harder than ever to access, with difficult to find channels and live events hidden away in expensive pay per view places. It was an unknown-to-speedway fans company that out of the blue stepped in. Mayfield Sports. Most of us had no idea who they actually were. Now, we are only two SGPs in, so let's give them the benefit of the doubt as to what we are going to experience as we go forward. But the early signs as we have seen are slightly alarming. I was pleased to see the drones had gone. Firstly I imagined that was a decision based on customer feedback but now I suspect it's financially based and is a cost cutter. The fact that many SGP events are now 2 day events with meetings the day before suggests another attempt to close down the costs . Nothing actually wrong with that and actually it's sensible when you think about it. But, here's where it begins to unravel. This ditching of the screening of SoN2, SGP2 and SGP3 came out of nowhere and has, understandably, left lots of people unhappy. And it seems clear that Mayfield had no intention of telling folk beforehand. Until they were forced to. That's not good business sense. There's also been the reduction in prize money for the riders, which did come out pre season. So it seems we are now looking at a shoestring production, at least compared to previously. Richard Coleman claims he needs to get the SGP series itself right first, which is commendable, but let's put our hands on our hearts and ask ourselves seriously if you believe he will later extend things to what they were previously? And here's where I want to ask the question. Why didn't the FIM think about giving the whole series to Poland to promote? I'm pretty sure OneSport, organisers of the SEC series, have previously wanted to take it on, but were rejected. I have to ask the question, why? Poland leads everything in speedway. It's professional in every way at a level that no other country can match. Its weekly televised productions from Canal Sport and previously Eleven Sports are beautifully put together events that run to time, are superbly slick and professional and clearly there is a large pot of money to do things the way they should be done. Now, I completely understand that perhaps no Polish company came forward to promote, but I have to ask, were they actually asked? And if not, why not? To hell with FIM prejudices against the Poles, which clearly exist as Poland has long complained bitterly that they have to fork out more than other nations to stage SGP rounds. The FIM should, in my opinion, be begging OneSport or any other Polish TV company that will, to take this series by the scruff of the neck and promote it PROPERLY. Speedway is in a mess. Everyone knows that. Even Polish promoters and owners of clubs I've spoken with over the past couple of years are worried that their product is attracting less young people than previously. But, if we want to see our beloved sport, the sport where racing can be utterly spectacular and beautiful, be able to succeed, we have to market and promote it properly. And that includes promoting and televising the youngest and younger racers at world level too. If Mayfield Sports don't have the will, or the money to do that properly they should either change their business plan, or get out quick and be replaced by a company from Poland that can do it properly. It's the only way I see our world championship events remaining a serious TV proposition.

  48. Seems like we are damned if we do and damned if we don’t. The lads got stuck in and nearly pulled off the win but overall they gave a good account of themselves. You can forever call the if, buts and maybe but at the end of the day the riders can only race the opposition on track. I was pleased for Kyle as he gave it his all and that’s all you can ask for. Wills and Cooper will only learn from the experience and people thinking that they will wipe out their opposite reserves everywhere they go need to give them a break. These lads and many other youngsters are the future of British speedway and will only improve over time.
