Workington Comets v Glasgow Tigers 23/08/2025 3pm.
bigdave replied to topaz325's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Taken from the Comets website: Denham shares some details on a extra meeting to add to the diary in September: “We are going to run a meeting in the memory of Jay Cartmell. Jay’s mum and dad Leigha and James have done a great job so far of organising it – we just have few things to put in place before we confirm any details. So far it looks a cracking lineup and it will be a four-team tournament style, something which we don’t see anymore in speedway. It’s a really good cause for the fans to get behind and hopefully it will be an entertaining meeting with a good crowd.” “We should be a position to announce more details next Sunday at home to Berwick but if anyone wants to help out with the meeting, as there is a few costs associated with running it, then please get in touch with either the club or get in touch with Leigha or James.” There's a post on the Comets Facebook Page that enables you to message Leigha Cartmell. -
Taken from the Speedway Riders Index 1929-2022: Bernie Lewis LAGROSSE Born: 2 August 1939, Christchurch, New Zealand. Died: 30 June 2007. Career record: (1965) Glasgow; (1968-70) Berwick. NOTE: This rider originally rode under his real name of Bernie Lagrosse for Glasgow in 1965 but, when he returned in 1968, Trevor Redmond took some riders to Wales and said if anyone volunteered to be a Welshman for the night, there would be a bonus in it. Lagrosse agreed and Roy Williams was born!

Edinburgh v Workington Championship 15th August 7.30pm
bigdave replied to eide67's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Edinburgh won 8 heats, the comets won 7 heats but still lost by 20 points! Too many last places. There was only one heat where an Edinburgh rider finished in last place and the Comets didn't get a heat advantage all night! -

This week it was discovered that the BSPL have scrapped the asset system. See the separate topic on this in the news and discussions section.

Riders are no longer considered assets of clubs

I thought the bond was there to ensure that if clubs closed unexpectedly with debts, the bond would be used to help settle those debts? -

According to Dick Barrie's column in this weeks Speedway Star, the system of riders being considered assets of clubs has been quietly scrapped. So clubs will no longer receive transfer fees or loan fees for riders who go off to ride elsewhere. Riders are now considered self-employed. Given that some clubs will have spent a lot of time and money building an asset base and therefore could suffer a significant loss of income, I'm surprised that this decision hasn't been more widely publicised and debated in the speedway press. Clearly this benefits new clubs or clubs who have never built or maintained an asset base. Also, I think it discourages clubs from taking a chance on investing in an up and coming rider, knowing that the following season, that rider could move elsewhere with no return for the investment the club has made. So I do wonder what the rationale is for scrapping this system?

Championship Pairs April 5th 3pm (Workington)

It's common knowledge that at times Craig struggles with his mental health. If he's not in a good place at this moment in time, then he's done the right thing in not riding. Let's hope he's getting the help he needs and we see him back riding soon. -

Help researching my dads career [1955-1978?]
bigdave replied to IsThisThingOn's topic in Years Gone By
Hi, I have looked at the Speedway Riders Index (1929-2022), which lists every rider that has ridden for a British team in an official league or cup meeting and unfortunately there is no record of your dad contained in the index. It may be that he raced in the second half individual scratch races rather than in the main meeting but that would be difficult to prove without having access to the programmes from any meetings your dad may have ridden in. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck with your search.
