  7. Panthers aiming for a happy 45th anniversary Panthers star Robert Lambert misses the meeting with Ipswich after scoring eight points for GB in a World Cup qualifier. Peterborough Panthers promoter Ged Rathbone has called for a special performance to mark a special occasion tonight (June 12). His unbeaten city racers entertain East Anglian rivals Ipswich in a Premier League clash at the East of England Showground (7.30pm) – 45 years to the day of their first-ever home meeting. It was on June 12, 1970 that Panthers took to their own shale for the first time when thumping the Rayleigh Rockets 51-27 in British League Division Two in front of a crowd reported as being in excess of 2,000 fans. It is safe to assume the current bunch of riders would settle for a similarly emphatic outcome tonight as that managed by the side of Pete Seaton, Richard Greer, Andy Ross, Brian Davies, Pete Saunders, John Stayte and Mervyn Hill on opening night all those years ago. Rathbone, who masterminded the club’s successful survival bid last winter, said: “This is a club with a long and proud history as a 45th anniversary highlights. “The original Peterborough team started off with a home win all those years ago and we need to mark the occasion by picking up a good result of our own. “I would happily the same sort of victory the 1970 team managed and I would certainly love to see a crowd of that size turn out as well! “Our own attendances have been pleasing so far and we have certainly been giving the supporters some great entertainment. “The racing has been outstanding for most of the season and that is why we could not just sit back and watch such a great track and top facilities potentially be lost for good. “We have said all along though that this was not just about surviving. We need to secure the long-term future of the club and we also need to be successful. “That means challenging for trophies and I feel we have a team to do that this season despite the injury problems we’ve had.” They have flared up again ahead of tonight’s clash with Lewis Blackbird losing his race to be fit after a heavy crash on May Bank Holiday Monday. He is still being troubled by back pain after a spill in which he also suffered a couple of broken figures. Panthers have drafted in Redcar racer Matej Kus as a guest and the absence of teenage star Robert Lambert is likely to prove a bigger blow. Club chiefs were expecting the 17 year-old to be available after Great Britain bowed out of the World Cup at the Race-Off stage last night (Thursday). But Lambert has told them he does not have sufficient time to travel back from Vojens in Denmark where he scored a highly creditable eight points as the Brits were pipped to victory by Poland. However, it is understood that two Ipswich riders involved in the same meeting – Danny King of Great Britain and American ace Gino Manzares – will make it back to line up for the Witches. Ipswich were tipped up as likely title-winners ahead of the campaign, but they have made an indifferent start to the league season. They lost at home to Newcastle last night when without King and Manzares. Expected teams: Panthers: Brady Kurtz (guest), Rider replacement for Robert Lambert, Matej Kus (guest), Michael Palm Toft, Ulrich Ostergaard, Oliver Greenwood, Simon Lambert. Ipswich: Danny King, Gino Manzares, Nico Covatti, Rider replacement for Cameron Heeps, Rohan Tungate, Stefan Nielsen, Ritchie Hawkins.
  8. Ostergaard set to ride through the pain barrier Ulrich Ostergaard in action against Berwick. 08:45Thursday 11 June 2015 Skipper Ulrich Ostergaard plans to ride through the pain barrier for Panthers. Ostergaard is nursing a broken toe and ankle ligament damage after being involved in a crash during a Danish Championship quarter-final last Saturday. But the 34 year-old is determined to line up for the city side when they return to action against Ipswich Witches tomorrow night (Friday). Ostergaard said: “I got T-boned by a young kid going into a corner and spent six hours in hospital so it wasn’t the best Saturday night I’ve ever had! “The x-rays showed that either my little toe or a bone very close to it is broken and there is also ligament damage to my ankle. “I’ve had it strapped up all week and, providing I can get my boot on and put some weight on it, I will be giving it a go.” Panthers are also sweating over the fitness of second string Lewis Blackbird, who is still being troubled by back pain suffered in his Bank Holiday Monday spill. Blackbird also sustained two broken fingers in that crash in the first leg of a first round KO Cup tie against Plymouth two-and-a-half weeks ago and a late decision is likely on his participation with a guest understood to be on stand-by. Club bosses are expecting teenage star Robert Lambert to return if Great Britain bow out of the World Cup in tonight’s Race-Off. However, riders involved in FIM events are entitled to miss league matches 24 hours either side of the meeting in question. Panthers would be entitled to the use of a rider/replacement facility for Lambert were he not to return. Opponents Ipswich have two riders involved in the Race-Off – Great Britain man Danny King and American ace Gino Manzares. Both are understood to have indicated they will race for the Witches on Friday if their nations fail to reach the World Cup final. One thing set in stone is Panthers’ use of regular guest Brady Kurtz at number one on Friday. They have booked Ben Barker to fill that role at Newcastle on Sunday.
  9. Crikey Ostergaard is fit? has that been confirmed.....? Kurtz - great guest! Bjerre to score 0 in heat 1!!
  10. is the daft BSPA rule still in place that only 2 EL riders from each team are allowed to double up? complete and utter tosh!
  11. Injury blow for Panthers skipper Ulrich Ostergaard faces a race against time to be fit for Panthers' next meeting. Photo: David Lowndes. 07:38Monday 08 June 2015 Panthers captain Ulrich Ostergaard suffered a suspecteed broken toe and ankle ligament damage in a crash during a Danish Championship quarter-final at Grindsted on Saturday (June 6). The 34 year-old now faces a race to be fit for the club’s return to action on Friday (June 12) when they entertain Ipswich in a Premier League derby clash at the East of England Showground. Promoter Ged Rathbone said: “Ulrich was hit by another rider and that just about sums up our luck with injuries this season. “He went to hospital after the crash and underwent x-rays which suggested he has suffered ligament and tissue damage to his ankle. “We will be in regular contact with him in the next few days days, but both Ulrich and ourselves are optimistic he will be able to ride on Friday.” Another Panthers rider, Lewis Blackbird, is also battling to be fit for the East Anglian showdown against Ipswich. Blackbird suffered two fingers and a blow to the back when crashing heavily during a recent Travel Plus Tours KO Cup first round, first leg victory against Plymouth. http://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/sport/speedway/injury-blow-for-panthers-skipper-1-6784896

  15. I have to say that Ronnie Russell acting like a menacing thug in every conversation with the meeting officials started to wear a little thin in the end...!
  16. STATEMENT: GO SPEED INTERNATIONAL Thursday June 04, 2015 GO Speed International Ltd (GSI), the company responsible for managing British Speedway’s contract with Sky Sports, would like to make the following comments following Monday’s Elite League meeting between Coventry and Poole. Go Speed International Managing Director, Terry Russell, said: “Our role is to try and keep all parties happy whenever possible – Sky Sports, the individual clubs, the British Speedway Promoters’ Association and more. “We were concerned by the weather forecast for Monday and informed the Coventry management we needed to speak to them on Saturday morning to potentially postpone the meeting. Unfortunately, we could not get hold of the Coventry management at that time. “Our agreement with Sky Sports is that, in the event of a poor forecast, we can give them the option to postpone 48-hours in advance at little or no cost to the broadcaster – and at the same time we would offer the staging club another TV date. Win, win. “However, once the 48-hour threshold had passed, every effort was made to stage the meeting as Sky were committed to the broadcast. “The track was fine at the start but deteriorated because the rain finally arrived – rain which had been forecast earlier in the day. “At no time did Sky Sports have a say in whether the meeting went ahead, if the track had been waterlogged during the day it would have been postponed there and then – but it wasn’t. “Sky were quite prepared to run a ‘filler’ show in the event of no racing, but when it was obvious the track was fine, both teams were happy to race. “During the meeting, the steward and co-ordinator liase with the managers and captains and the meeting went to the end of Heat 10, admittedly in far from ideal circumstances. Once again, Sky Sports had nothing to do with this decision. “It’s a delicate balancing act trying to keep everyone happy – and the fans inside the stadium were obviously disappointed for which we apologise. “We sincerely hope this situation never arises again – but I would add rain has always been the sport’s biggest enemy.” Just for those that cannot ESP!!!
