  1. I was at Cardiff last year and watched last night's GP on tv. For me last night's meeting was the better of the two, though of course there is no substitute for being there.
  2. I have just finished reading this and really enjoyed it. My wife was born in Wanstead and grew up in Loughton. We got married in Loughton and had our reception in Epping. I passed my driving test in Chingford and watched my speedway at West Ham and Hackney, so the places Norman mentions have meaning for me. I used to go to Petticoat Lane with my Grandad in trhe 50's and remember Prince Monolulu. Thanks for the memories Norbold
  3. Like Norbold, my earliest memory of television was watching The Grove Family. We did not have a set but my Grandparents did. As for children's tv I seem to recall Picture Book on Monday, Andy Pandy on Tuesday, Bill and Ben on Wednesday, Rag Tag and Bobtail on Thursday and The Woodentops on Friday. Again like Norbold I remember Billy Bean and Mr. Pastry, but also Hank, Colonel Crock and Mick and Montmorency.
  4. Did you make your own bows and arrows to play cowboys and indians, sharpening the points on the kerb edge?. It's a wonder we did not kill anyone. I used to ride my bike as fast as possible on wet grass and try to broadside, failing dismally every time. In my mind I was Mike Broadbank I look back at my children's primary school years in the 80's and can't help but feel mine was more rewarding.
  5. My word Norbold, reading your book is bringing my childhood memories flooding back. The cigarette card games, marbles, the freedom to roam etc.. We are close together in age and though I grew up in the London Borough of Havering, my Mother, my Grandparents and other family members were all East enders. Us boys played British Bulldog and a game whose name I never saw written down, but sounded like Hi Jimmy Knacker. We used to make "barrows" out of planks of wood and old pram wheels, with rope on the axle for steering. Going downhill most boys would sit and steer with their feet. The mad ones, me included would lie face down and steer with our hands. 57 years ago...where has it all gone?.
  6. Pie and Mash never did me any harm
  7. My copy arrived today...looks to be a good read.
  8. I have just bought a new copy for £3.00 with free postage on ebay. Looking forward to reading this
  9. Thank you Henry. I had forgotten that my "suspend disbelief" scenario had recently happened. It drives home the point though eh?. Kill the Joker.
  10. For me a better line-up than most GP's.
  11. My son took me to Cardiff last year, my 1st. meeting in 30 years. Up till then I used to go with friends
  12. I took Mrs. CHR Stock Car Racing at Harringay on our second date. It was very nearly our last. It was a freezing cold March night and she hated it. I took her to speedway once and she hated that too, vowing to dump me if I subjected her to any more motor sports. We will have been married 45 years next month
  13. One would think they would invest in quality track covers and leave them on until safe to take off.
  14. National Speedway Stadium, National Speedway events...simples!
  15. I doubt the attendance would be high enough to cover the cost.
