  1. Mine is the fact that Charlie Monk never made a World Final as a Glasgow rider . Charlie was an incredible rider for the Tigers , known as Charlie " maximum " Monk by the press up here ( in the days when the press took an interest in speedway ) . He was an outstanding number 1 . Steve Lawson is regarded as Glasgow's greatest ever rider , but Charlie really deserved that accolade as he did it at the top level for Glasgow . Jim McMillan ( as a reserve ) is our only representative at a World Final .
  2. I was at a Nordic/British final at Hampden , pretty sure it was 71 . Think Barry Briggs won the meeting , Ivan Mauger riding with a plaster cast on his leg is the thing that sticks in my mind from that night , i was only 12 Just did a bit of research and Briggs actually got eliminated from the Nordic British final that night in Glasgow . Mauger it was who actually won the meeting with Ray Wilson second .
  3. I remember him coming to Glasgow as Sheffield's number 1 when i was a lad . Always a threat to Monk , McMillan and co when the minor Tigers were up here . He reached a World Final ( something Monk incredibly never did ) and was a member of a winning Great Britain World Team Cup side . Maybe we should let the Aussies ride for us now ..........................oh wait a minute lol
  4. Another watching the sky Sunday in store i'm afraid . For any travelling Comets it's cloudy , but dry at the moment . But who knows what that misery guts in the sky has in store for us this week .
  5. As we all know , these guys are a different breed
  6. At work so no time for the big build up . But as usual on a Sunday the United Kingdom is forecast to be basking in sunshine , while our little corner has a big blue wet thing over it according to this morning's weather map . But in the hope the speedway hating weather god buggers off somewhere else and leaves us alone , this meeting is really all about the Comets . They must get the 4 points out of this one to progress to the Semi Finals , while for us it's all about maintaining the home winning run . No idea how both teams will line up as there may be some mickey mouse meeting in Kazakhstan or somewhere that will deprive us of a couple of riders , but on the assumption there's nothing to annoy us , we can look forward to welcoming back three ex-Tigers in the Comets' ranks . Josh Grajczonek , Mason Campton and Chris Mills . Reports in this morning's Sun suggest Anders Thomsen is going to try and ride through the pain barrier , not sure that's such a good idea with nothing really hanging on this meeting for Glasgow .
  7. Steve Jones in for Anders i'm hearing , oh dear
  8. There is also the famous night at Coatbridge . Scotland v Norway international meeting and the pipe band is doing it's stuff walking round the track before the meeting . Gets near tapes up time and the referee puts the riders for heat 1 on 2 minutes , and out they come . Unfortunately the pipe band is still on the track , kilts and bagpipes scatter in all direction
  9. You'll get it in the neck now for apologising
  10. We seem to race each other about twice a month anyway , probably wouldn't notice the difference if we were in a league of two
  11. Wasn't the Pairs , was a league match . But seems Wee George and the Somerset Chicken are well acquainted
  12. My mate " Wee George " getting told he wasn't getting let on the National Express coach coming back from Birmingham in 2009 cause he was pissed . And convincing a , yet again , pissed Wee George that he was hallucinating when the Somerset chicken mascot hugged him . He poured his scrumpy out in the flower beds
  13. Yep , they have memories like Elephants in Smugville and still speak of it more than 10 years after the event
  14. He still has legendary status at Armadale for claiming he was having a heart attack to get a meeting delayed cause one of his riders ( Davy Watt i think ) was late arriving
  15. I see . Heat 8 was the best race of the aborted meeting . There was passing and repassing between Kasper Lykke and Luke Bowen , and both of them were right on the tail of Jason Garrity . At this point the track had actually dried out pretty well and the racing was getting better , but as soon as the riders left the track after the race - down it came again as heavy as before . And that was that , much to the relief of a worried Tigers support .
  16. What's wrong with them . It was describing the deterioration of the track caused by the heavy rain from when i got to the track at 2 , till we eventually got underway at 3-30 .
  17. The perfect race happens in two weeks time . Edinburgh roll up at Ashfield boasting a 15 meeting unbeaten run , or something like that , heat 15 sees Kevin Wolbert and Rusty Harrison line up against The Blessed Cookie and The Golden Child . The scores are level at 42-42 The Grand Monarch is reffing and Cook gets away with his usual roller and gets a good lead . Kevin and Rusty are in hot pursuit while the Golden Child is doing his maths homework at the back . A draw looks the likeliest outcome until the two brave Tigers do a pincer movement over the blessed one and fly past on the back straight in the last lap , sparking much joy as we cross the line for a match winning 5-1 . Paulco orders a taxi from the track 3 hours later
  18. James McBain sitting in the stand instead of being ready to race ? If you use r/r then it's madness not to name a number 8 especially at home . With Anders crashing and having to withdraw then obviously Kasper would have to take his rides . Which leaves the r/r rides as a problem . Okay a number 8 might not score owt in the r/r rides , but ef's happen
  19. Rain saved us today . Why did we not name a number 8 at home when using r/r ? If this meeting had carried on then we would have to have raced heat 10 and 12 or 14 with only one rider . That's amateur stuff from Glasgow . In answer to Fred , the track was unraceable in my opinion after the torrential shower before the start . After the delay to take Anders Thomsen to hospital , the whole time was dry and the track actually dried out pretty well . Heat 8 was as i described it in the updates , great race between three riders . After that the rain came battering down again as heavy as before the meeting and an abandonment was inevitable . Rye will be unhappy as they looked the likliest winners with Glasgow's silly decision not to have a number 8 .
  20. There you go Grachan , the Fuhrer has spoken
