Have to agree completely Hackney was one of the most dangerous tracks ever. The light stanchions were built into the safety fence.. It was like waiting for an accident to happen.and they did. They would never build a track like that today .
-
There was not any heat details because there were not any heats. It was four rider going round the track in front of council officials to get a track licence. There was one staged race if you could call it a race .

The first official Speedway meeting at the City Way stadium Rochester was on the 1 August 1932 . There was only one other meeting and that was the following week. . Most unusual for a stadium in those days was that Speedway was here before Greyhound Racing. which followed 4 years later. So there were 6 matches under the Rochester Name which were two home open meetings and four away British League Div Two . It became the 55th licenced Greyhound track in this country .The site was redeveloped in 1980.

I think he only rode in one meeting for West Ham where they were away to Birmingham where he fail to trouble the scorers.in the two heats he rode Reg Fearman,Lionel Whatling, Davies, Alex Taylor 3-3 Davies, Tolly, LLoyd Goffe,Alex Taylor, 5-1

If You Could Bring Back One Rider...
mickthemuppet replied to TonyMac's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
I think most people would agree that it would be Lee Richardson -
Perhaps this might help My son does not take Sky Sports and uses my Sky Go to watch it on the internet which he put up on his TV screen. So he can watch all Sky Sports which cost him nothing..So I presume your father has Sky Sports you can use his.name and password and watch on your internet.

A good posting. I pay exactly the same £32.00 per month. I used to pay £58.00 per month and phoned them to cancel. They then came back to me and offered £32.00. I have this contract on a cancel they next day either way. Anybody paying more than this should cancel and then will be offered a lower price.Do not worry if they do not offer you a lower price at first as they will come back to you. They hate churning.

With the billions of pounds that Sky have had to pay extra for football there will be even less to pay for Speedway. It will eventually disappear from from their channels. That is unless they get it for free. Then more people will have to go to the tracks if they want to see Speedway. Will be a good thing when this happen.

Rather a silly answer as there is a quarter page about Arlington Village being an ideal spot to visit
-
He has also sold one at least Danny King
-
I received the Eastbourne Tourist Guide for 2015 this morning . There is not one word about the Speedway there but most other sports seem to be covered. How do they expect people to go to Arlington if it's not even in the tourist guide?

Perhaps one or two things might help you Young Norbold I got Jack Parker's average from the points he scored divided by the races he took part in ,times four. Jack Parker got 10 maximums that season compared to Tom Farndon's 7 although he missed 9 matches whileTom Farndon missing only one.Can you work out why Jack Parker did not qualify for the Star final . The clues are all here. Where did you get the bit about the qualifiers for the Star final were based on their league averages It was not based on league averages at all otherwise Jack Parker would be number one Where did I say TF and JP rode for Coventry between 1931 until 1935 If you want I will give you the teams they both rode for.
-
No true though is it 1929 Tom Farndon league average 6.73 1929 Jack Parker league average 10.76 1930 Tom Farndon league average 8.30 1930 Jack Parker league average 10.34 And then 1931 JP 10.02 TF 6.76 1932 JP 8.80 TF 8.00 1933 JP DNR TF 8.94 1934 JP 8.00 TF 8.94 1935 JP 10.50 TF 10.06 So Jack Parker's average was better than Tom Farndon in 7 out of 8 years.in which they both rode

Greg Hancock How Good.?
mickthemuppet replied to stratton's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Speedway is a game of two halves. The first half is pre Ivan Mauger and the other half is from Ivan Mauger onwards. When he arrived on the scene he gradually put Speedway on a much higher level His diet and food intake at times was too much . I know in one final which he did not win he was like a bag of bones. He eased off slightly after this and was back to full fitness again. He attention to his machinery was unbelievable and reached new heights not achieved before. So I would discount any rider before the pre Ivan era. Most only had one bike and were working the rest of the week. Some riders even top scored with the track spare and even Ove Fundin won a world title on one. Most of their bikes were very very ordinary. Then the numbers ones of all the teams was given the choices of gate positions in every race. so they could have gates one or four in every race they took part in. Another thing was the top riders only met their opposite number once in heat one in a league match and that was it , compared today when the top riders now meet two or three times in a meeting. No wonder they got such good averages. In the 1940/50s, the starts were simply appalling. All the riders would be going backwards and forwards at the tapes and pushing them so they nearly broke. There were very few re runs. No wonder people stopped going in the 1950, as it was so amateurish. Hans Neilsen said in the 80's "They have just ruined Speedway" What caused that outbreak was the new rule brought in saying a rider must not touch the tapes.Today the sport is much more professional than it ever was. so it is harder today. As with all sports the competitors get better every decade. Two years ago I would not have rated Greg Hancock but today I think he is the best. He is a triple world champion and won league medals in three different countries and has had top averages in these countries as well. Plus what a great ambassador for the sport. He also hold the record of racing in the most Grand Prixs It's quite funny that Ivan Mauger said after winning his last World Title " I do not think there will ever be another rider over 40 who will win the world title.again" -
How about a Premier League team IPSWICH Tony Richardsson Tomasz Gollob Mark Loram Anders Michanek Dennis Sigalos Jarek Hampel John Louis

Lucifer Sam Can you ever get anything right. In season 1946 Eric Langton league average was 11.13. In 1947 he averaged 9.44. Perhaps you could explain why he was a decade past his best with those averages. The first match I ever saw was Wembley v Harringay on Thursday May 22nd 1947. The teams and scorers were WEMBLEY Bill Kitchen 10.5, Bronco Wilson, 8 Georgie Wilks 8, Bob Wells 3, Tommy Price 10 ,Bill Gilbert, 5.5, Split Waterman,4, Charlie May,3 HARRINGAY. Vic Duggan 11, Jack Arnfield 1, Frank Dolan, 8 Joe Bowkis 0, Ray Duggan, 9, Norman Lindsay 2, B Whitby1, Danny Lee ) Vic Duggan beat Bill Kitchen in heat One to ruin his maximum and Tommy Price beat Vic Duggan to stop his maximum in heat 12..VD was twice overtaken by TP. In heat 8 Charlie May's handelbars broke., never saw that happen ever again. ADMISSION 2/- or 10 pence in todays terms.

How can you possibly pick Eric Langton. I never ever rated him that highly when he was riding. would prefer Bill Kitchen who in the 1940's won 14 out of the 18 times that these two met.
-
Krzysztof Kaspezak(Possibly this years World champion) Jarek Hampel (Posted a 21 point maximum in one of last seasons GP's) Emil Sayfutdinov ( Who I thought was the fastest rider I had ever seen in the 2009 Gothenberg GP semi final passing Nickki Pedersen leaving him trailing) Whether he enters GP's or not does nor effect his ability as in European Championship Tomasz Gollob (Automatic Choice) Grigory Luguta (Done very well from a virtually non Speedway Country) Zenon Plech (One of the first Poles to race in UK) Edward Jancarz (Another Early Pole in this country )

If you asked anyone to pick their best football or cricket team ever nobody would pick players from the 1930's or 1940's so why pick those in speedwa.y Is I pick people like Ernie Blenkinsop in my best footballers ever, probably nobody would ever have heard of him yet he played in every England football team from 1928 to 1933. Todays speedway riders are far superior . They are much fitter . Nearly all riders in the 30's and 40's smoked . Not so many today. ' In the thirties somes of these riders would struggle to do even 40 mph. Nobody would say the F1 drivers were better in the 1930's compared to today's drivers. All athletes and Swimmers are far better today than yesteryear so why do some Speedway supporter cling to the misconception that Speedway riders were better 80 years ago.even though they never ever saw them
-
Try these then Jason Crump Phil Crump Chris Holder Darcy Ward Billy Sanders Leigh Adams Ryan Sullivan
-
Rob . I hope you have a big shovel as you are digging an awfully big hole to bury yourself in. In head to head's Peter Ebdon only beat Ronnie O'sullivan 12 times in 34 meetings with 1 draw. Hardly ground him down did he. Ronnie O'sullivan has a better head to head than against anybody. That makes him the best ever
-
How about Brian Collins who rode for Wembley and Coatbridge
-
I am afraid that you and Lucifer Sam are so wrong both of you are Probably the best judge of this is their head to heads. Hendry only beat O'Sullivan 22 times out of 56 with 4 drawn . Not even close for Hendry. Then Ronnie O'Sullivan has just past Stephen Hendry's 100 breaks and he has been playing 7 years less. R.O'S leads 13 to 11 in Maximium Breaks If you were watching the recent Masters tournament all the top players like John Virgo. Ken Docherty and Steve Davis said Ronnie was the best. Hope you can see the error of your choice with this information.

Looking back on other individuals sports you will find many outstanding sportsman like Phil Taylor is surely the best dart player. Then you move on to Tennis there are Roger Federer on Grass ,Rapha Nadal on clay and probably Novac Djokovic as the best all round player of all. If you watch the 1970/80's Wimbledon finals they look no better than a club match today Then in Swimming there is Michael Phelps with 18 Gold Medals. and Usain Bolt in Athletics. I think nobody would disagree the Ronnie O'Sullivan is the best snooker player ever. What do they all have in common. They are all very modern Then we come to Speedway . I would dismiss any riders from the 1930's where riders could just about do 40 mph. I would also leave out riders from the 1960/1970's My original choice of best rider was Ivan Mauger who was voted Rider of the Millenium. Then with a little research I have to say Greg Hancock without any hesitation. He is now entering his 27th year of Speedway and is currently the reigning world champion and is fancied to possibly win it again. He has won 18 finals at GP level .and made 79 finals. He has won league titles in four different countries compared to many choices on here like Ivan Mauger who never ever rode in a foreign league. Nobody in Speedway has won as many awards as he has, so he is my choice of best world champion ever
-
Also Freddie Williams was a runner up to Peter Cravens third + he won three league championships in the top league. Then in league and cup matches they met in the region of 24 times and Freddie Williams won 75% of the races between them.. Although he won his two world titles at his home track he had to qualify on other tracks.as well
