That was an amazing loss.

Your last sentence could have hit the nail on the head - engine tuners are perhaps the big winners in the speedway dig for gold stakes.

Mind I must repeat in the original post on this subject the book states NK as losing £100,000 through covid19 restrictions. But so yes that was his loss. So what were his actual full earnings for that period? I guess, just a guess, it must have been much much more? Still a decent wage for sure.

Sounds like he didn't lose £100k he did not earn £100k, they're very different things. Lost earnings, although it would have been shown as a loss on that years accounts, he would have recouped the majority of his outgoings for that cancelled season when Speedway started up again I'd have thought.

I was speaking to one top Championship level rider that was doubling up about 9 or 10 years ago and I remember him saying in a busy season the previous year he had earned just under £120k. But, when his machinery, tuning, mechanic costs etc were all taken into account they had cost him £109k.

So, basically he had risked his life racing speedway all over the country for around 7 months to be left with £11k. When you see it like that nothing makes sense, which is what I said to him. With a wry smile his reply was; "Yeah, you are right, but at this stage in my life it's better than having a real job!"

I think that sums up how costly it is and why they do it. Although, I bet the amount of money that ends up with engine tuners over a year is quite eye watering!

Sorry WMV, but I don't believe that at all. Ive worked with a top level rider for almost 10 years albeit a while ago and those figers just don't stack up. Since then, Ive sponsored many riders over the last 10 years since I stoped working directly for a rider (free of charge of course) and they wouldn't do it for that.

Just for your information,

I worked with Adam Shields for 10 years (in the pits, working with and attracting sponsors, running his website and the logistical side)

Since he retired ive sponsored

Cameron Woodward

Georgie Wood

Kyle Newman

and this year I sponsor

Kent Eagles

Charlie Wood

Vinnie Foord

I am also part of the team that tried to get speedway back to Arlington so I have a good perspective on the finances that involve running a rider and a club.

The sport in the uk is in real trouble and we have reached a point where something has to give financially  , there are no more plasters, no more patch ups, either something gives or the sport in the uk as we know it is no more, it’s that dire

What we have is the best it can be Dean,...

Far too many opportunities have been missed...

As has been said, many times, if you went on Dragons Den with the UK's operating model and business plan, it would be laughed out of the room...

Not enough employees to open your doors?  Then borrow them from your competitors, and let them use yours...

Employees cannot work certain nights? Then change your opening hours to suit them, don't worry that your customers may not be able to attend on those nights but would be happy to visit you on other nights in greater numbers...

Employees wanting to only work six months of the year? Then make sure you charge your customers a pretty penny to be able to pay them enough so they get six months off. However. Even by charging your customers "top doller" for 15 mins entertainment, you still wont earn twelve months money by only opening six months of the year, but don't worry, because your competitor's are doing exactly the same thing...

The race to the bottom is almost over for UK Speedway. Covid should have been the reset button, with new and radical ideas, but instead we had the "same old, same old" with the result being the "same old, same old" ever dwindling fan numbers and interest..

Let's see what radical ideas they come up with now Birmingham will be gone,?

A "purple helmet" may be possibly quite appropriate...?

F'naaar, F'naaar...:D

Edit. Just realised the promotional and marketing plan hasn't been mentioned...

"Bring a Friend" should be ground breaking enough, (but obviously don't tell them how much it is to get in till they are there)...-_-

I was told a fair few seasons back how much the riders at Sheffield were supposed to paying each month for tuning! It was surprising to say the least! It was pre top division days as well!

If any of you get the chance to have a look at the list of freeloaders who come in through the pits at any meeting at any track, it’s staggering how many people believe they are entitled to get into speedway free because they once did this or once did that, I was talking to someone last night who does currently have a job in the sport but not at this track and last night was purely there because “had nothing else to do” and didn’t pay in and was let in, if the sport was getting huge crowds and was flushed with money then fine but it isn’t, it’s on its arse and these folk are contributing to its downfall
