  1. Looks like Craig Cook will make his track return next week after his recent issues.

  2. Regardless of the issue it will be good to have Cookie back.

  3. Think Matt said there was an issue with the landlords and that the rent for each year was always paid in advance. He didn’t go into detail but reading between the lines the landlords could be demanding a much higher rent for next season. I might be off the mark. The landlords no longer use the stadium at all and only use the car park to charge nurses to park there for work. The only people to now use the stadium is the speedway. Matt said the council back the club. It’s about time the council withdrew the lease from Gaming International.

  4. Saw a quote yesterday that Glasgow throwing money at trying to win the League again with our new signing. Whilst other teams also make signings but are not throwing money at it. Must be just us that throw money about you couldn’t make it up. Not surprising though.

  5. What a meeting… I’d throw my money at that place every week if it was closer. If you’d asked me before the meeting what I thought we’d do , I’d have said probably a 12-14 point defeat. To come away with a draw from one of the best teams in the league is something we should be over the moon with.. but I’m truly gutted! Gutted the way it went down… gutted for our team who I believe exceeded expectations (other than Normski who is Mr.Optimistic and believed we would get the win ).. Leon absolutely busting his balls knew he had MPT on the inside of him and had to stay on the quicker outside line…. I’m just truly gutted he couldn’t get the finish across the line for the team that he so wanted! The main thing is he got up and walked away from that. He has been one of the stars of the British Speedway season and the absolute star of ours! 2 away points is a great days work and although the win just eluded us, it made it a swift journey home

  10. We taped it and watched it from just after 5pm, the most significant thing I remember was when Pearson said about the GP being live from 4pm and stated perhaps some of the viewers wouldn’t have realised that and would have been watching it from the normal time of 6pm. I thought lucky buggers, the first 12 to 16 heats were a total borefest, it was complete shyte of the first order and whoever thought we needed another track that’s impossible to pass on needs bloody sacking. Its not difficult to understand why the Stadium was barely half full, the racing was non existent and even Tatum and Pearson struggled to big it up. I used to spend a lot of time and money going to GP,s abroad but nothing I have seen this year tempts me to return, it’s barely watchable on BT. The new points system isn’t helping and like others I wonder if the camera operators know what they are doing.

  11. Just got in and jumped into the shower for the second time today. Well what can you say? Quite a bit actually. I got into the stadium an hour before tapes up and the track looked like a battlefield. A tractor was working on bends three and 4 and you could see it had taken a big watering. But with 25 mins to tapes up the Birmingham team we’re not happy with the track going into bend 3 and the tractor spent 15 minutes sorting it out, removing dirt. The track looked rough and patchy but as heat one took place it wasn’t bad as it looked. Heat 2 was no issue either but heat 3 was a different story. A hole appeared, invisible to the fans in the grandstand but James Shanes went through it and his wheel buckled under him throwing him almost over the handle bars before he landed in a heap on the 4th bend. The 2 minutes for the rerun were cancelled and riders, management and track staff went and had a look at the issue. The interval was called at this stage. But ten minutes later everyone was still standing looking at this hole, what was described as the size of a kitchen table. Lots of kicking at shale and shaking of heads. I thought this has abandonment written all over it. The trackman then drove off to the tractor pits and changed to the blade. He came out and took off a huge pile of dirt in a trench down to the base. The track staff and Danny King then packed and smoothed out the hole. Again everyone stood about gawping but Rory Schlein went and got his bike, everyone ran off to the safety of the infield and he blasted around 3 laps with no issues. Riders as we know have a tendency to shake their heads, come out of racing mode and want to clear off home. The ref said all good and on with the meeting. Of course all this delay meant the track had dried out so we got several heats in dusty conditions before another short break when the bowser came out. Throughout the meeting the area of concern was dealt with between each heat and the meeting concluded without further issues. We have to thank the riders for not refusing to ride as that would have been catastrophic. As for the meeting, a one sided affair. For Poole Danny King was untouchable. Superb 15 point max. Backed up by Cook, Worrall and Schlein. Basso was unluckily not to score paid 3 in heat one but his bike played up when we’ll clear in second. For Brum, the standout rider for me was Jack Thomas, who was criminally under used. 9 from 5. Both Morris and Cartagena had 4 rides when they deserved 3. Not a great meeting and not a great advert for the sport. After the meeting Danny Ford said they would be working in the track before the Glasgow meeting on Friday.

  13. Last week a dust bowl….this week over 2 hours to run 10 heats….. next we will be hearing how crowds have dropped….. promoters need to take a long hard look at themselves before blaming people for not turning up to watch.

  14. Track is very very bad. A hole has appeared on apex third and fourth bend. Shanes hit it and his wheel collapsed. Riders all on track staring at it. Interval now taken. Lots of kicking of shale and standing about. Not good but not unexpected considering last two meetings. On arrival track looked like a battlefield.

  16. The World Finals were a culmination of many, many qualifying rounds around Europe, where many, many riders had the opportunity to qualify. Those that came through all the rounds deserved to be there in the final, therefore the best riders of that year. With the GPs, just how many riders have the opportunity to qualify? Places are taken by riders qualifying through what they achieved in previous seasons, by selection, and may well not be as good in the current season as others who have no opportunity to qualify. Remember the WCQRs at all British tracks? Virtually all British and Australasian riders had the opportunity to qualify, now they have virtually none. And don’t get me started on wildcards, the semi-finals and finals, this season’s revised scoring system. Sorry, but OOFC is a bit of a closed shop.

  17. It was only half full this year, how many people will go back to watch that load of crap and it will hardly entice people to go after watching it live last night. Let’s be fair under this new scoring points system the first 12 heats are gate and go with little interest in passing or racing with riders generally accepting positions after the first bend. The fourth and fifth series of qualifying races are generally better as riders make a serious attempt to qualify for the semis. The semis and final are generally very competitive as riders are desperate to make the final and invariably take chances to try and get through and then win the final. I would have thought every point counting and just the winner getting 25 would satisfy both camps, although I don’t have any problem with the old system where every race point counted, it certainly made for better race meetings.

  18. 1st time at Berwick for some years. Hardly changed. Quite liked the format. Makes the back end of the meeting, even more competitive and you must have a strong 3/4 riders. Young Flinty looks a star in the making. I expected not many passes, but the racing was still quite competitive. Overall, enjoyed it!

  20. Total Crap GP.Points scoring system is not working for me,riders are just riding to get to semi’s and taking their chance. You can predict 6off the 8 semi finalists most GPS.Every point should count with just a couple extra for semi’s and final.Smarzlik must be laughing his head off with this Formula.

  24. I would keep the old scoring system as we had it, all race counts for the world championship, and the scoring in every race is 3-2-1-0, simple as that, easy to understand, and totally fair for every rider.

  26. i used to love the world finals, but i've grown to love the GPs. but, with the GPs i would prefer 20 heats and scores totalled at the end, no semi/finals, as gate positions always come into play and overall it should be about most points accumulated not someone sneaking into the semi's on 7 or 8 but walking away with 20 or whatever it is

  29. Would guess Lawson and Kerr were the two ‘leavers’, Kennett the retiree, and lionsfan2012 the first to state £50k on speedway updates. Wonder which Promoter objected to the Team GB U23 fixture taking place, despite it being scheduled in an Eastbourne ‘protected slot’? There is a wealth of information in this article that sheds new light on the actual running of speedway in Britain and locally at Eastbourne, some of which will put the ‘know all’s’ on here back in their box, but other aspects that have never been spoken about. It’s a fascinating and insightful Q&A session, and as far as I can make out, open, transparent and honest - something Ian Jordan has always been. I will miss his enthusiasm, bravado and telling it how it is.

  30. Very good post and a good assessment of speedway in uk . As the parent of a young rider we have seen the level that European riders are in terms of ability against our lads and in all honesty it's not so much what they do on the bike it's more about the set ups. These lads all have constant training on all aspects of the sport with national coaches who also travel with them for meetings. We have occasional days with current and former riders which is more based on track than in the pits. The days are ok but are always run on slick tracks with no preparation done to them , after speaking with our counter parts the always practice on fully prepared race tracks . There is no help for the parent who has to do the spanner work and in all honesty even though I'm quite mechanically minded I do believe there's not much more I can do and without guidance I don't know how much more I can do or teach my lad. His natural talent will only take him so far then it's about small marginal gains which without more help at this stage we won't know how to get them

  33. Pleased you enjoyed your trips to Wimbledon - Tricky track as you would have seen and very different to Workington - If you got out in front and rode the right line it was very hard to get passed - I well remember Trevor Hedge in the KO Cup Final v Belle Vue shooting out of gate four and he was away and gone followed by (Slim) Jim Tebby our number 6 and regardless of whatever he tried to do Ivan Mauger could not get past Jim so a 5-1 in the first race - We went on to win the first leg by ten points and although we lost the second leg we kept the lead overall and picked up the cup against a strong Belle Vue team - good memories - When I go up to Birmingham the eating area behind the glass reminds me of the old main stand at Plough Lane - At Wimbledon I used to go outside on the 4th bend and like many of us I used to love the great smell of the Castrol oil - I did manage to visit Derwent Park a few years ago and remember Chris Schramm was in your team and riding at reserve - good atmosphere from the crowd - think it was a Saturday night and the following day I travelled by train across to Brough Park changing at Carlisle - different track shape but again a crowd that loved their speedway - hope they can carry on after this season - Some very happy memories so thank you too -

  34. Being a “big fish in a small pond”in UK means nothing in terms of anywhere near being World Class. In any Sport only a tiny amount of competitors reach the TOP in World Terms. Polish Speedway is the dominant force in Speedway in , Sponsership,Organisation,Promoting and crowd levels. They have set rules which are relatively simple and reviewed at the end of most seasons. They implement changes if they think help the sport in their Country. They come down heavy on Teams that don’t comply ,even to the extent of track prep. Here in UK it’s all about self interest,a rule book that is all about interpretation. The sport in decline in UK,we just have to accept that fact Any young Talent with real ambition in World Terms has to be riding on the Continent .Breaking through there is difficult ball game for any of them as can be seen when the ride abroad just now at Age Group Levels. UK is now where journeyman riders pick up and top up their wages, that doesn’t mean we cannot see decent matches and entertainment, but we need to attract people to watch in decent numbers.

  36. Phil Morris is responsible for the track conditions. All he does is water the track too much. There were very long and boring track preparation breaks last night because of this, and it still did not improve the racing, there was hardly any overtakign in the first twelve heats. But the racing got a little better towards the end and it did improve dramatically in the two semis and the final, when it really mattered. It is obvious that for most of the riders the heat races are just not worth taking any risks, due to that highly unpopular new point scoring system. There's lots of hard work to do for DISCOVERY/EUROSPORT to restore the SGP series to its former glory next year. But I very much doubt that they will be the right people for that job. With them it could easily get worse, but I hope I'm proved wrong.

  38. A nice warm and sunny day here with temperatures up to 22 degrees. Should be a good crowd attending this afternoon. Hopefully the track staff are already at work flooding the track with water. Going to be one hell of a job to keep the dust down during the meeting. Watering and grading every two heats might be a solution though doubt that will happen as it will mean a 3 hour meeting.

  41. Yes I must admit that at this point in time I wouldn't have the time or be prepared to invest my own money or have the contacts to make this happen. Which puts me amongst the 99.9% majority on here but that shouldn't prohibit anyone from sharing their views, opinions and ideas. Otherwise it would be a rather dull forum. You should also feel free to use the forum how you see fit.

  42. Aye enjoy them they should be good meetings but who would you fancy as a guest at home? R/R for the last two away meetings so would you use R/R again for Plymouth and Brum the last two away meetings? Well that will be down to Rob Grant and after the last two years no one would blame him if he walked... problem is there is no one in the wings waiting to jump into the breach so that would be it if he walks... but what I will say is he has done all the hard work this year and would be mad not to give it one more year and it would be impossible for next year to be anything like the one he has just been through... just need the fans to vote with their feet and get along to Brough and cheer on their team... You may in the first one but just in case I will be waving from the royal box upstairs on the last one as we have decided rather than standing outside for the last meeting we are going to do the corporate hospitality package upstairs and try out the prawn sarnies... So keep an eye out from the centre green Ruff and I will raise a glass... to you and the other volunteers who without whose help and support there wouldn't be a meeting... Cheers Buddy Regards THJ

  45. This does ask the obvious question. Why bother with a young Danish rider whose club rides on a Wednesday causing a direct clash with our home meetings? There’s no doubt he is a talent and a top rider in the future, but if he can’t ride in the U.K. on Wednesdays during the Danish season, he’s going to be of little use to our club.
